to be honest, i always thought Nora was an MP and was going to college on the government dollar thanks to the irl soldier tuition fund that had been a thing even in the 50s. this would be even more immersive since it would give her a bit more of a thorough connection for her career switch.

But... what if my male character wanted to be a lawyer?

Or she is a police woman/detective on maternity leave at home with her husband, hence the diploma as maybe she is also advancing through the rank's or has her eye's on switching career to a safer desk job as she is also now a qualified lawyer (or she could be a criminologist) and perhaps she even has an eye on Harvey Dent's job (or whoever was the DA in her Boston which is not exactly the same as Gotham city but hey) having slipped past internal affairs on several occasion's whom had investigated her for too much use of deadly force when arresting suspected Canadian resistance member's.

Actually it is a good idea for those that wish to indulge more deeply in the female military start so great mod for a perfectionist and perhaps the start of a much more complex mod that may have multiple scenario's each with custom change's to the game start.

Now we need an alternate start for the Harley Quinn character, I am thinking someone should take parson's insane asylum, add a terminal with note's from a Doctor Freeze and add an alternate exit from penal Vault 111 into a part of Parson's Asylum basement that will not upset the Parson's quest line so a custom cell or just customize the vault itself a little to turn it into a holding facility for the bad and he wicked put on ice, perhaps someone could make other characters from DC comic's and put them in the Cryo Holding tank's along with Quinn but when she wake's she find's they have all escaped and that they did not release her so now she has a grudge and hunt's the scorched earth, erm sorry Wasteland for them wanting to get even and perhaps find her long lost tormentor and love the Joker with an extra special grudge against him, he would obviously now have his own raider gang.

Anyway off subject, this is a distinctive mod that WILL appeal to like minded players whom want to play there character as a female military veteran or perhaps special forces or intelligence agent so a Kudos for the author.

then he wouldn't know how to load and operate a minigun, or how to swap a T-51 chest piece with a T-60 - and that's just the least of my problems.

the problem isn't with the soldier's story, it's with the lawyer's. check out the linked article for my motivation.

@theREALspanker well i don't see the issue, couldn't anyone learn those things? from what i can see operating the minigun in the game is literaly knowing how to hold on to two handles and pressing a button? as for loading, trial and error would lead most people to how to do it after a few tries, as for hitting s#*!, anyone can practise shooting anywhere in the apocalypse?

same for the swapping of power armor pieces, loosen that bolt, loosen this bolt, s#*! falls apart, put on the new pieces tighten the bolts till it stays in place, reconnect whatever cables you might have unplugged, if it works you can go on, if it doesn't try again.

most of the things you do in the game are things you could self teach by simply trying. just because you don't know how to do something doesnt mean you can't learn it lol

belt-fed and ordinance delivery weapons are a completely different from anything a civilian would encounter - even soldiers need special training to operate them. you would need to be taught those things, and be taught really well to be able to do them in the stress of combat. just reliably reloading a conventional firearm in stress takes dozens of hours of practice.

i know a pretty good bit about guns: i've built them from bags of parts, i've done machine work on them, i load ammo, i shoot regularly (well, at least i used to). i would not feel confident loading a minigun, even in a non-stressful situation. and explosives? one missed step and the thing doesn't fire, or it drops an armed projectile right at your feet. seen any military blooper videos? those people are even trained!

as far as power armor, ever see someone with zero mechanical skill try to do something we geeks consider trivial? there are people who are challenged by changing toy batteries or assembling a plastic Christmas tree - the kind of folks that groan at the sight of a mere screwdriver.

but those are ultimately practical quibbles. my point is that the soldier's story is tragic, while the lawyer's story is merely unfortunate, and the tragic story is much more compelling.

Very true, a more in game lore friendly version and one that would explain a few thing's would be to suggest that she may or may not b e a synth, her son no spoilers but you know the story especially if you played the institute once you found out who he was may have had her created his real mother being dead a long time ago, those extra years in her life may not actually exist and she could be a much newer creation than she think's, Dema's question (far harbor) about if she certain that she is not a synth would also make a lot more sense, of course a synth would have both a self learning combat program and also programming allowing it to use basic weapon's, then again she could be a staunch republican and a member of the NLA (National Laser Association).

In our world we have people who don't even know what the power button on a computer is. In the Fallout world the outcome would be much worse.

Every soldier is a civilian who learned how to "soldier", no-one is born as a soldier. So male char is the soldier in Fallout 4, female char is the lawyer. Doesn't mean that the lawyer couldn't operate weapons and all, everyone can train to do it. Sure, in game it doesn't quite reflect it since the character can immediately do these things as soon as he/she gets hands on any of these items, but then again, games don't always make sense. Don't have to To me Nate is the soldier and Nora is the lawyer and both "magically" know how to do things (I mean, even Nate with his soldier background would have a training or skills to do everything what the player can do in the game, but eh), maybe they were trained while they were "on ice", like it was in a movie "Demolition Man" with Stallone and Snipes

Still, nice work with the mod, any and every effort putting into making mods should be appreciated and I always do. In case of this mod, thought has been put into it as well. So, thanks for the mod.

Perhaps they were both in the military and that is where they met? When playing Nora, Nate was assigned to JAG and she was an MP. When playing Nate, he was an Infantry Officer or NCO (like he is in the game) and she was still a MP but received her JD after discharging since it is Criminal Justice. In Lore, it does state that some MP units were assigned Power Armor to keep the Pre-Zero Day (Pre-Nuke War) rioting down.In fact, the two wearing power armor at the Vault 111 Gate when you ran up there are the start of the game, were MPs

In the 1950s, which Fallout is based off, women wouldn't be serving on the front lines. However, I can see women on the front lines thanks to power armor, exoskeletons, and stealth suits. Given that, instead of being a MP, she can also be an infantry officer/nco.

Women served in the front lines in the fallout universe. You have mentions of pre-war female front line soldiers in terminals. It's based on the 50s culture, it isn't actually the 50s

Bethesda should have made Nora a JAG officer. That way it's the best of both worlds.

This make more sense. I never did like the Lawyer background. How many lawyer without military know how to operate heavy weaponry? None. Thanks for the mod creation.

Technically anyone can pull the trigger but dismantling a .50 M2HB to clean it and then reassembling the weapon back together insuring the headspace and timing are correct is another. Also, Hollywood gives a civilian the impression that one can keep firing a weapon continuously without a problem especially a machine gun.At least in Fallout 4, the developers are starting to address barrel overheating but not fully.

i would do it with a new female character, yes, but it's not really worth starting a whole new character for. the effects are pretty small, really, as the soldier-vs-lawyer thing comes up less than ten times.

The one you have linked is totally buggued (at least for me) : can't start a new game and advance in the intro sequence if this mod is active.

Lets hops this new mod can work much better ...

i'm aware of that mod, and actually link to it in my article. that mod changes much more than dialogue: it gets rid of the law diploma altogether, it adds other objects, and even re-edits some audio. it's a much more complete mod, but, as has been noted, that ambition risks bugs with those changes (and i don't agree with all of its changes).

my primary goal was to just restore Nora's background, rather than add anything to it. my secondary goal was just to learn stuff about the Creation Kit. as i progressed, i realized it was challenging fun to do this with zero added assets and instead use shared resource ninjitsu (thus the 68KB, though that's not relevant in the broadband era). that's why i draw the line at changing the intro video and the "Hello, Honey!" holotape (unless Courtenay Taylor wants to do 30 seconds of pro bono mod work, heh).

once the PS4 mods were announced i realized another advantage to this method: no added assets means PS4 users can enjoy it, as well.
