Thorgosh's Perk Overhaul and More

Did you feel like the Vanilla Perk Tree was a little bloated? To enjoy certain aspects of the game did you feel like your early/mid-game build was sidelined or pigeonholed? I did... But I fixed it! This is a complete overhaul of the Vanilla Perk Tree that bled over to Overhaul a few other things. Well originally it was a few things… now it’s quite a bit! (I shall be the next t3nd0!!! xD ) Under-the-hood changes include: Charisma Challenge Overhaul, Chem Overhaul, Cooking and Food Overhaul, V.A.T.S. adjustments, and more!

-[001] What does this mod do?

This mod overhauls the Vanilla Perk Tree by combining similar Perks and then replacing the now available Perks with awesome new Perks! I did this to allow players to enjoy more of the game regardless of their character build, but give the game more of an overall RPG feel. When crafting new perks and looking at the current system I found I was able to address some of the issues I had with the game. Charisma challenges didn't seem to scale in a way that made sense, you start with too high an accuracy in V.A.T.S., and Crits are fun! So I fixed all of that, too! There are some changes here and there, and we'll detail all these things in a bit, but that's the long and the short of it.

(Note: Best used on new playthrough. It won't make much sense for your Sniper who had NightPerson to now have Slayer which boosts melee Crit Chance. If you have a Perk I've disabled, you probably just lost a point.  Or use one of the many “Respec” mods out there)

When starting a new character the best and MOST BALANCED build is to put all of your stats to 3. This ensures that with Bobbleheads you will have access to every Perk given a high enough level (Which is stupid high FYI.). Now that you’ve established a baseline, distribute the rest of your points, but don’t raise anything higher than 6. This balances the progression towards Perks that aren’t in your immediate build (When you see how I overhauled the SPECIAL Training Perks you will understand.).

v 1.0-1.7 - Base mod. Had to fix the Level up menu. Fixed small inconsistencies within the mod. Initial balances.

v 2.0 - 2.6 - Base changes to Chems introduced NukaWorld Patch

v 3.0-3.x - Cooking and Chem total Overhaul. Balance changes for them.

v 4.0-5.x - Check “Future Plans” Section.

-[002] New Perks you say?

Soooooooooooo many new perks! S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Training has been overhauled. You gain +1 to the Stat on odd ranks (+2 at Rank 9) and something specific to that S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute on even ranks. (IMPORTANT- This means you will only gain +6 to each SPECIAL so it is possible to lock yourself out of high rank perks! Without collecting Bobbleheads you require at least a 4 in a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat to gain access to all 10 Perks by the end of the game.) Mastery Perks have been added as the Rank 2 of the Level 1 stills. These become available at level 50 and you can only take one. These are akin to t3nd0's Focus or Mastery Perks from PerkusMaximus. All Level 1 Skills are now only 1 Rank (Plus the Mastery, but that’s just because I can’t add a +100% new Perk) and are "firmware upgrades" (just the title of the Perk, not like an item or anything) to your Pip-Boy... and they're pretty awesome for the most part. Levels 2 and 3 have 5 ranks, 4-6 have 4 ranks, and 7-10 have 3 ranks. There are a few exceptions. Let's just get into it!

Idiot Savant-Ricochet

VANILLA (Just switch Critical Banker and Better Criticals)

-[003] ...and what else?

Under the hood changes

-I re-introduced non-V.A.T.S. crits. You have +1% chance to Crit per Luck and another +1% on melee weapons per Strength. Automatics have their Crit chance quartered (i.e. 20 Luck = 20% Crit, but 5% with automatics). I also lowered the rate you gain Crit in V.A.T.S. slightly to compensate.

-I nerfed Chance to Hit in V.A.T.S. by ~25% and increased range modifiers by ~25% as well. This is balanced by giving you plenty of opportunities throughout the Perk tree to increase this value or increase your range with certain weapons.

-(This part can be removed through a patch file) You can’t just walk up and hack a computer or pick a lock like Terminator Salvation’s epic hacking USB stick. You have to be trained in it. The minigames are also slightly more difficult as there is not too big a reprecussion for failure. I highly recommend Hacking101. Lockpicking101, and LockyBastard to run along side these changes.

-Charisma challenges have been completely overhauled. You gain +12.5/7/5% chance to pass Easy/Medium/Hard challenges per point of Charisma. The buffs to Charisma Challenges you get through the Perk tree are flat across all ranks. So if you have +15% chance to succeed in dialogue and only 4 charisma you have 4*(12.5/7/5) + 15 = 65/43/35% chance to succeed in Easy/Medium/Hard challenges. This new system should allow for plenty of chance to fail, but a more graceful transition as you level your character up, regardless of build.

Other Major Overhaul

-Chems and Cooking have also been overhauled. I didn’t like basic combo drugs and I always feel cooking falls short. Let’s start with Chems.

Chems have now been split up into different categories: Alcohol, Medical, Casual, and Hard.

Alcohol is buffed by Lead Liver in the Endurance Tree. Alcohol mainly buffs STR. Beer has a 5% addiction rate and Hard Liquor has a 15% addiction rate.

Medical Chems include MedX, RadX, and various Blood Packs. They are buffed through Medical Chemistry in the INT Tree. This is also how you learn to Craft Chems. MedX has a 10% addiction rate.

Casual Chems include various Mentats and Day Tripper. They have the smallest buff and addiction effect of the tradition chems and have a 5% addiction rate. Specialized Mentats have a 15% addiction rate.

Hard Chems include everything else, and are buffed by Major League Doper in the END Tree. These have had the most changes. Buffout now revolves less around STR and more around END effects. Clamex and DaddyO buff Lockpicking and Hacking respectively. These have a 15% addiction rate. Specialized Versions of Buffout, Jet, and Psycho can now be crafted. These include:

Buffout - Buffmax, ROIDS! , Steady
Psycho - Overdrive, Fury, Catseye
Jet- Jet Fuel, Super Jet, Ultra Jet

These have a 35% addiction rate and have specialized effects. Any duplicate effects will obviously dispel… so use the stronger chems last!

Cooking has also been completely Overhauled. To cook higher level meat you need LifeGiver Rank 1. To make basic meals and soups you need Rank 2. For more advanced meals you need Rank 3. And to make feasts that buff your companions you need Rank 4.

The higher level the meat the bigger the buff. The more work you put into the dish the longer the buff lasts, or you may even combine a couple of buffs into one dish.

Baked Goods and Egg dishes are now a thing. So much other cool food stuff!

-[004] Future Plans (v. 4.0 - 5.x)

-I want to make the base mods work like NukaWorld with the two Perk Requirements… I think It leads to a more stable flow to gameplay and upgrading your character and their weapon.
-I want to add more to the cooking
-I want to add more to the late game as more mods come out to lengthen the enemy encounters to higher levels
-I want to change the way HP scale throughout the game.

-[005] Incompatibilities

Obviously anything that changes any perks. Perks in the Perk Tree, the Player Perk, most Companion Perks, and Perks assigned to the Player (so any mod that changes the “Player” or any of the companion npc files as well, not as many as you’d think).

Anything that changes V.A.T.S. numbers (slow down time or damage taken changes can are fine, just not Perception/Range/Gun multipliers)

Changes to Cooking or Chems will also be incompatible. I had compatibility patches up for a couple of these overhauls, but can no longer support them due to how much I have altered the base system.

Modifiers to out of VATS crits, buffs to VATS, Power Armor effect, or Charisma Challenges can lead to obvious balance issues, as I have worked to balance all of these things within the mod. Furthermore depending on how the MA went about providing these changes there could be compatibility issues as well.

Be sure to download the patches you need for the DLC you have. Some mods will have patches, too. I will list them below.

Not technically incompatible, but could make some things weird and other things make you slightly overpowered: Mojave/Wasteland Imports. I ran this for a long time, but the MA’s most recent update has provided a few more clashes with my Overhaul and my game than I can currently fix properly.

-[005] Reviews, thanks, stuff

Reviews - “I worked really freakin’ hard on this. It’s pretty much the coolest thing I’ve done… or played (that I’ve had a hand in)” - Me

“I just wanted to say thanks for your mod.  One of my favorites and can't wait to see what you do in [the] future.”

“Basically, what I'm saying is, I really like the vanilla game and [that it] explored a lot of interesting builds, but your mod has made a lot of the less interesting perks more interesting, or swapped them for entirely new, better perks, and that's diversified what I do even more, and I'm always looking for excuses to play the game again in a slightly different way. Thank you.”

Thanks - I’d like to thank my girlfriend for not leaving me this last couple of months while I stared at a screen going “Now what does this value do?” and encouraging me to see the project through. My friends have also been super supportive- Thanks! I’d like to thank Blind Guardian and Nobuo Uematsu for giving me hours worth of music to listen to. I’d also like to thank Pepsi and craft beer. Oh, and Bethesda is pretty dope for making this game.
