any way that the lockpicking could be made to be harder? I would like it where having 1 perk puts the difficulty on the same level as Skyrim. as it is right now master and expert locks are much easier then in Skyrim

Absolutely essential mod, works like a charm even all these years later. Thank you!

Hi! Can I modify the assets from this for use in my own tweak mod? It's intended for personal use, but since I'm a console player I have to upload to bethesda.net to use it. I would make sure you get full credit

I like this idea :) Looking at the screenshots with the debug menu activated I think that the sweetspot at rank 1 is a little big, but I usually just give myself all the perks for lockpicking and hacking at the start of the game since I don't like how the minigame was implemented in Fallout 4. I might use this mod :)

Is it just me, or is the mod not working anymore?

@nacidocoqui, do you think you could make a more challenging version of this mod?

If you've ever played Skyrim, you'd know how they got player lockpicking in a good place, because you COULD pick Master locks at Novice level but it would be extremely tough. Your picks would break in half a second and the sweet spot was hair thin, but it felt very satisfying. It was genuinely a question of "do I have enough time and lockpicks for this? Should I come back later after investing a couple skill points?

At the moment, Fallout 4 vanilla is terrible for this and your mod just basically gives me 2 free perk points & early access to master locks, master locks are no challenge at all for some of us.

Thanks for reading, and if anybody else is reading this and thinks they could give it a shot (as the mod author nacidocoqui is probably dead) then please let me know!

I agree. This mod makes it too easy (I only go exploring with 1 bobby pin now), but it's still a necessary mod because I can't stand the idea of "I can't pick this lock now because the game won't let me even try so I gotta come back later". I've had a go at changing the values, but it's beyond my skill so I'm seconding the request.

Also requesting a more difficult version, for me all the locks now seem the same. But still better than having to remember where a unlocked safe is for later.

The Game Configuration Menu ([url]/mods/33759) allows you to tweak all of this. Health of your bobby pins based on lock difficulty, size of the sweet spot on locks, and even how much experience they are worth. GCM isn't all-inclusive on settings to tweak but it's got those, at least.

YES! Finally!!! I hated how they made Fallout 4 lockpicking and hacking perk based instead of player based. It was very limiting and you're forced to take the perk to open higher level locks/computers instead of relying on personal skill.

Not sure why the changed it from all their recent previous games to being perk based but I am glad for modding and your mod. Thanks.

Maybe they just wanted to feel the waters out with this but I hope they go back for their future games.

You needed a threshold of Lockpick skill in Fallout 3 and New Vegas before you could attempt a lock. The original is actually more truthful to the other games. But yes, this is mechanically superior and more "modern" than Bethesda's choice.

that's why it's called a "role-playing" game. you are playing your character and he might not always be able to hack a terminal or pick a lock. so making you invest skill points or perks into it is perfectly reasonable.
for me that is also a justification for using easy lockpicking/hacking mods. if he knows how to pick a lock, he will do that eventually, why should I waste my time on it
that and also that I've hacked my share of terminals in FO3 and FNV (btw, you were able to perma-lock yourself out of a terminal) and picked so many locks that I can't be bothered now

then again if you are still eager to play minigames, go ahead and have fun

In the original Fallout games, lock picking and hacking were just dice rolls. The "skills" involved were just modifiers that increased (or decreased) the success range on the RNG roll. There was no player "skill" involved, beyond the ability to keep clicking the mouse.

It's kind of funny to complain about Bethesda replacing the skill level thresholds with perks when the minigame is still the same. Sort of reminds me of the people who wanted lock-bashing, lock-shooting, lock-exploding, etc. alternatives that would make the lockpicking skill pointless.

"The original is actually more truthful to the other games."

Not really since you're locked out of master locks til 21 which frankly is just janky and makes for repetitive exploration (but thats what modern bethesda relies on). You could get to 100 lockpick before level 10 in all previous games so if anything this is closer to them then that (Max lock pick between 5-10 is closer to level 1 then 21 for the same access), and perks were seperate from your abilities in world entirely, you had the option to increase your lock pick and still pick a perk that benefits you in world, and lockpicking aside from accessing broken locks never had any perks, now both this and skyrim they have shoved the most lame unimaginative perks you can get. This and the hacking perks are just hard walls you have to take (its not a choice, just a matter of when since you can take every single perk in the game, meaning more so then ever you can be a master of all...and people complained about 3 when it came to that).

Tbh the unbreakable lockpick at lvl 4 bothered me this is a better alternative to that and was what I was hoping to find.
Having the ranks give an easier time lock picking as compared to making it fail proof.

For anyone interested, I've created a compatibility patch for this and War Never Changes - Gameplay Overhaul. Note that this first version only supports the LOCKED version.

This mod doesn't work for me at all. This one, and the Player Hacking. The wording is changed in the perk tree to reflect the new skills, but skill actions are still vanilla. With 0 points in lockpicking yet, I'm able to access novice locks, and anything more says I don't have the skill for that. This is how it is for this, Player Hacking, and the Strong Back skill mod. They're all worded in perk tree as if they're working, but still getting vanilla results. And Genius Game skill mod won't even work. My game crashes immediately with that activated at all. Anyone else having this? Anyone know what I could do. I've tried sorting them around in different levels of my load order, and nothing happens. Thanks.

I realize this is 2 months old, but I'm going to answer it anyway as there may be other people in the same boat.

You have to at least take the first level of the lockpicking perk before the ability to pick all locks shows up. Before that, it's vanilla operations. Once you have the first level, you can pick anything but the voice dialogue will remain vanilla.

Im having the same problem now. Did you ever get it figured out? My skill tree has the dialogue, but I cant pick anything above novice even with a point in lockpicking
