About this mod

Remember when you found a full set of X-01 in the back of a train car three times in a row? Leveled Power Armor tends to do that. This mod manually removes nearly every Power Armor spawn in the game and makes Power Armor exceedingly rare and difficult to acquire. Just as it should be.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD ATOMICTEM's MERGED LEGENDARY PATCH TO USE WITH OFFICIAL DLC + AWKCR + CREATION CLUB + ETC! ALSO, IF YOU FIND POWER ARMOR WHERE YOU SHOULDN'T IT'S MOST LIKELY BECAUSE YOU INSTALLED THIS AFTER STARTING A NEW GAME. ALSO ALSO: SCROLL DOWN TO SEE WHY YOU "CAN'T" REPAIR PA! I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENS AND I NEVER FIGURED IT OUT. I ALSO FORGOT HOW I MADE THIS, BUT HAPPY TO SEE THAT PEOPLE STILL ENJOY IT! -8/10/2020

UPDATE 6/9/17: Life happened, and then I forgot this existed. So, that's on me and I do apologize. Thank you to everyone who helped with bugs, and especially Gota115 who basically championed this mod while I was, uh, doing nothing related to it. Sorry. Honestly, I was going to do a clean install of Fallout 4 and see what mods were like now-a-days but clearly this needs to be addressed first. Assuming I can remember how to use the GECK, that is...

UPDATE 8/10/2020: I couldn't remember how to use the GECK, in case that was not hilariously obvious. Thank you to everyone who kept this weird thing running in tandem with other mods. I literally have no idea how they were able to do that.

Power Armor should feel S.P.E.C.I.A.L. It should be the zenith of all your hard work and death defying antics. The endgame armor that makes you a literal walking tank. It should feel, well, powerful. And all of that is pretty difficult to pull off when you're basically tripping over full sets of X-01 that are just standing there. Out in the open. Like somebody parked it and forgot to come back. Because nobody's gonna notice one of the most advanced pieces of tech ever produced at the bottom of a shallow pond, right?

Yeah, no.

Some Assembly Required is a mod dedicated to a singular goal: Recreating and maintaining that sense of wonder, power and achievement when using, and discovering, Power Armor. How, you ask? Well, it wasn't as complicated as you might think. Okay, maybe it was. Probably.

What this mod does:

  • Manually disables almost every Power Armor spawn location from the base game and replaces them with boss trunks, chems, weapons, ammo, and explosives. Basically, where ever you used to find a set of Power Armor, you'll find a supply cache.

  • Alters the Main Quest "Out of Time" ever-so-slightly, so that the Power Armor on top of the Museum only has the torso piece, which is at 10% health.

  • Scatters Raider, T-45 and T-51 pieces all across the Commonwealth. Interiors, Exteriors, underwater, you name it! Encourages better looting and observation! Many areas where a full frame spawned now have one or two pieces of power armor. Military Bases, Bunkers and facilities relatively untouched since the Great War are good places to start looking, along with locations of great faction importance/high population.

  • Sets what few Power Armor spawns remain to Raider or T-45 (depending on the enemies who use it), and ensures that they do not respawn when the cell resets. So, you'll still have boss enemies in Power Armor. Boss Enemies that spawn in Power Armor, as opposed to entering it when the fighting starts, are unaltered and will respawn when the cell resets!

  • Makes it so that the only way to acquire the T-60 is to join the Brotherhood of Steel.

  • Changes vendor lists so that X-01/T-60 pieces won't show up, except when appropriate (BOS T-60)

  • Alters the Quest Reward of Cambridge Polymer Labs to produce a T-45/T-51 variant (depending on player level; attempting to force it to be T-51)

  • Swaps Danse's Post Blind Betrayal Power Armor for a non BOS T-60.

  • Swaps out all instances of the Atom Cats T-60 for the T-45, which can now use that paint. [Requires Consistent Power Armor Overhaul and optional patch; thanks Bordraw!]

  • Rebalances materials to repair power armor to be far more comprehensive and difficult, depending on the set and available lore pertaining to construction. Example: Helmet and Torso pieces will be much more difficult to repair than limb components due to the complexity of their construction and the resources required.

  • Boosts Power Armor Durability (except Raider) by 100-200% (or more!), depending on set and piece, in order to bring it more in line with new repair requirements.

  • Adds severe perk restrictions for repairing Power Armor depending on model. Hope you've invested in Nuclear Physicist!
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED PERKS, THE GAME WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MATERIALS TO REPAIR THE ARMOR, EVEN IF YOU DO. THIS IS NOT A BUG.
...but it is frustrating that it doesn't visually show the perk requirements like everything else.

  • Raider: Armorer 1
  • T-45: Armorer 2, Science! 1
  • T-51: Armorer 3, Science! 2, Nuclear Physicist 1
  • T-60: Armorer 4, Science! 3, Nuclear Physicist 2
  • X-01: Armorer 4, Science! 4, Nuclear Physicist 3

  • Adds an in-game holotape that provides documentation on the mod. Currently only available with console commands until I can figure out how to add it to your inventory automatically. You can find it by typing help "Some Assembly Required" 4 into the console.

What this will do:
  • Make the quest to find the X-01 actually fun and engaging.

  • Even moar severe perk restrictions regarding Power Armor Mods

  • Unique Power Armor Parts scattered across the commonwealth

Enjoy, and don't forget to comment, endorse, and whatever else you feel like doing!
I'm also more than open to suggestions!

This mod pairs well with another of mine, which deals with lore inconsistencies and breaks in immersion.
