Any specific reason to have the black bars?

Usually, i use the black bars such that the focus is on the character
(Whilst still not denying the background entirely)!
But more importantly, what do you think about the black bars?
Do you think i should use it or should i leave it!

Vertical black bars just look tad bit off to me.
Maybe if you really want to use black bars, you could try out having them horizontally?

PS: How did you get the eyelashes to look like that?
The reason why i don't crop the image is because the nexus will then stretch the image to fit the aspect ratio. This is the reason why i use the black bars (in addition to focusing the view on the character that is ^^).
The eyeliner and eyelashes is obtained from LooksMenu Customization compendium.
