If it is stress on the system, it could be happening during attacks with several enemies, but I am not sure of that at all. Hmm... I also have had Nick Valentine with me the last week, although it seems farfetched that he would be a cause. When it happens, it seems to happen to all followers, no matter how many I have. Well... I am not so sure about Nick - I will have to watch for him getting the problem too. I really notice it on Cait and Piper. I play first person normally, but it does happen to me as well - although I am not sure it is every time.
I have read about mismatched face texture sizes, but I haven't changed anything recently that would affect that, and I am not even sure when I last changed mods before today. Today I have tried changing the order of mods that affect face and face related textures - but so far no luck.
If you have any thoughts beyond the several "fixes" for the problem on Nexus, please let me know. BUT please don't research anything - I am just asking for any hints you might have based on your experience.
If I wasn't acting like a newbie, I could have included an image. The next time it happens I will try to remember to grab one.
this is a joke ;) ! yesterday i've had a funny fo4-discussion about the bc7 texture format. i just wanted to explain it with some others to some guys who were not aware that this is the current dx11 dds texture format with the best quality image results also for fo4 and sse, since both games are qualified for using dx11 graphics interface. their argument in 2024: bethesda is not using this format so far (it uses inferior older formats due to their famous laziness) and it could crash the game... so i was quite stunned since i use this format in most of my mods since 2017... ;)
regarding black face: you seem to know the problem. it is texture size related. but it can also happen randomly, for example due to fast travel.
My understanding is that FO4 and SE can use BC7 just fine being dx11 based games as you say, but don't technically require it. I don't think LE can handle BC7 at all, as I have needed to convert them back to older formats when I have ported some SE mods back to LE for my game. I have some DOS type batch (xxx.bat) files I made to do the conversions, so it only takes a few seconds to do.
On my dark face issue... I wonder if maybe fast travel is involved - I never considered that. In my game with all the extra mods, many times when I fast travel I get into a battle as soon as I get there - so I might not notice it has happened until later. I will keep an eye on that - thanks! If I can get it back to something that happens less often, I wouldn't mind that much. I am also considering cutting back on the number of followers I have at the same time, since I have had more recently.
black face only happens if a mod changes a face texture. you can narrow it down on that. the result is a mix of textures that the game is unable to correctly process(i would call it a known engine bug). it is also part of sse. if you know the face and you can identify the exact mod, check the related textures or temporarily deactivate the mod.
Immediately saved and reloaded, everything fine:
So I released Heather and kept Piper, Cait, and Nick. Entered the building, fought a bunch of Super Mutants, went up to the roof, everything good. Fast traveled again, fought some mutants, everything still fine. Who knows?? BUT fast travel certainly seemed to be related. Although I also know that could have been a coincidence. Anyway, I will run with just the three of them for a few days, and see what happens. I mainly still had Heather for selling her stuff I loot, but I reallized last night that Nick can do that too. So no problem dropping back to 3 followers. I mean... I usually (or always) only had one during my first playthrough, since I didn't have a follower mod.
These games... always an adventure! Both quests and figuring out glitches!
it is always nice fallout entertainment
