What the heck is Dogmeat doing

I play Fallout 4 since it's release. But I never saw that Dogmeat has something in his mouth to show me...^^ The funny thing is that he has stolen this rifle (the CR-74L from CC) from it's wall mount :D. It was no problem to put the weapon back. I only had to speak at him, barter and then put the weapon from his inventory back to the wall :)

    This is one of the dog's functions: picking up things that could be useful to you or sending him to fetch things in places where it is not safe to enter (high radioactivity, for example).
