Nice one, DV! This can be a lot of fun and I'll do my best to leave Enderal sometime before deadline of your event to see what the wasteland will bring me. I admit, it's just as much fun being part of a theme as a participant as it is to arrange them. I also remember your last reply, saying something about a more organised event throughout the community. I kind of like how you're thinking and maybe we can gather a bunch of interested people in the future to host themes like a baton (not sure it's the right word), as in the theme passes on to another each time. It would make for more possibilities to be part of something other than just being the host all the time and it would be a more shared workload too. We'll see what happens, but for now I'm pretty cool with flying solo since I do have a few ideas I still want to present...

Thanks for keeping the themes coming, even if I know you have tons of work to do at the farm!

Thanks Rick! I just got Skyrim working again the other day so I could make something for your Nightmare theme. As far as collaboration, an old shootery mate and I have been hashing out some details for sharing the workload on the Community Theme. Some really fantastic ideas for upcoming themes that I wish I'd thought of myself, too...

I do like that idea of a theme relay, though. Not that I need another big event to jump into right after we've finished with the grand Nexus thing, but I think you're onto something there. A series of themes that follow naturally from one to the other (colors in the spectrum, phases of the moon, months, historical epochs, etc.) done as flash themes of one every week with a different curator for each, perhaps? Many curators for one unified (really big, wide-open) theme, with each selecting a different set of shots based on different parameters (one curator for landscapes, one for portraits, one for pictures of dogs, one for the color green, etc.)? Themes that follow one after the other based on the specific images contributors bring, like the surrealist head-bodies-feet/exquisite corpse game? A series of theme ideas written down on slips of paper, blindly drawn out of a hat, and randomly assigned to a team of volunteer curators to run as simultaneous events?

These are really interesting ideas for continuing the events and sharing the workload. I would be interested in helping in some small measure - as one who is a victim of "less is more" in the workplace, I, like many others, have more work and less assistance, so lots of hours sometimes.

ah, this one's prompted some excellent ideas in me, as these so often do! And your words on criticism are much appreciated; I haven't delved into the comments on all the photos, but I know I've seen some not great words being shared (sometimes by people with ideas vastly different than the images shown... perhaps rather than telling the poster to do something completely different, they use those ideas for themselves?)

Anyway, back on track, I look forward to seeing what plays out this round!

Nice! Yep, some folks were getting straight goofy in their soapboxery. Hopefully some of these communication shenanigans will be reined in as the Nexus community culture mutates to absorb, accommodate, and neutralize the attitudes in question. Then again, sometimes haters just gonna hate.

First of all, I love your set of images they are all interesting in their own right and really show a wide variety of aspects on what you can do with the theme. A theme which I am really digging as I already have some ideas Your images are creative and well thought out (like usual) you always inspire me to try new things. On a side note I did not know you farm, I have a small hobby farm so I feel your pain about spring chores.

Thanks, and glad to hear your curiosity has been piqued.

Yep, I run the nursery part of a mixed regenerative ag operation. Spent part of yesterday afternoon rounding up escaped goats, and today it's masonry patch-work. What do y'all grow on your acreage?

Oh that is really cool, I am really happy that regenerative ag operations keep increasing. With the commercialization and farm operations getting larger every year they are needed more then ever.

Our land is used mainly for pasture for our animals along with vegetables for ourselves and the animals to eat. We specialize in miniature/dwarf breeds of livestock (horses, pygmy goats, pot belly pigs, rabbits, etc) due to their size our animals are sold as pets to small hobby farms or even as household pets. We are fairly young as we are only a few years in, so we are still growing. This year we are hoping to add some miniature calico sheep, and a miniature donkey. I come from a farming background so it is nice to continue it as a hobby and it is pretty cool to see what was originally viewed as a farm animal to go home to someone who is going to love it like a pet.

That sounds like a really fun backyard business! It has been refreshing to see the re-growth of family-scale farming within my lifetime. Outside of any city-style foodie trends, growing your own makes a heck of a lot of pocketbook sense in this global gig economy/depression all us sub-millionaires seem to have found ourselves. Here in central Virginia there's a lucrative incentive to grow boutique, essentially useless value-added product crops for the Bos-Wash bourgie market- about which my feelings are mixed, to say the least. I'm more interested in the development of local farmer-to-community grey and black markets for truly valuable foods and medicines. That potential is promising indeed. Stable local markets incentivize more for-real-real resilient farming, which requires good ecological practice to do cheaply and effectively. All the raw milk dairies I know treat their animals and pasturage much better than the similarly-sized commercial beef operations in the area... So in that sense, I guess everybody getting cash-poorer all together can be a very good thing for community and ecological resilience.

This will be interesting and fun to see what everyone comes up with for this theme. Love your images here, especially the 4th embedded triptych. Regarding the reminder about etiquette, I totally agree. I saw a couple of very nasty attacks under the guise of "criticism" during the Nexus event that left me a bit horrified and like Luke, just shaking my head--so much so, I felt compelled to pull out the old soapbox, which is something I rarely do.

Thanks! While some of the specifics of the Nexus event fracas rather blindsided us on the organizing team, we were all relieved to see that the parts of the contest we were most fearful about complaints and caterwauling over turned out to be widely accepted after all. And in the main folks were plenty gracious with one another and very supportive of contributors novice and experienced alike. The final gallery isn't up yet, so I can't say for certain that we managed to not piss off absolutely everybody, so take it all with a grain of salt. I do rather think that the folks who were bellyaching and acting like bullies would bellyache and act like bullies no matter what the scenario. Some folks thrive on attention and either don't mind how they get it or don't know how to get it by being especially pleasant or interesting.

I just finished up cleaning my "Glass house" with a delicious grape growing in there,.. I get the spring chores all to well,.. , but the results are mostly very tasty , or simply beautifull to look at,..
I'll see what I can come up with,... but also curious what others will do with this theme,..
    Great inspiration set,...

Ah, spring cleaning. Always so satisfying to look at a newly tidied space once it's finished, though. What have you got growing in your garden this year?

I saw the etiquette 'problem' that you mentioned (shakes head)

This is gonna be a hoot! I can't wait to see what everyone cooks up.

And as always, your "inspiration gallery" is fantastic. Whatever your post-processing rituals are, you always create the richest colors and painstakingly posed shots.

Also, I just learned that word jazz is a thing.

Aw heck yeah! Ken Nordine is a well that has no bottom. He put out this album, 'Colors', for which he intended listeners to mark out their floor in a giant grid, invite all their friends over, and finger paint the squares with whatever they felt each track should look like visually. That's my kind of reefer madness.

As far as post-processing goes, I'll often add a bit of yellow to the shadow mix, balanced with blue in the highlights, then slap a real gentle RGB S curve to slightly boost the shadow saturation. The whole thing warms the image up to how I like it. Often I'll also tinker with the white level- I find that a broader mid-tone balance makes for a less painful in-game navigation experience, but doesn't always look as crisp come screen-shooting time.
