A very sincere thank you to everyone who came this far with not only me but Fenn and Mac. With some of the tension eased I will take a little break before wrapping things up in chapter 6 and the epilogue.

Damn this one is brilliant, the systematic clearing to get to Mac. You can tell Fenn is a Vet, all those Gunnners didn't see it coming!
Close to death: those scene's were awesome, you could feel the desperation with Finn and Dogmeat.
    10/10 my dude!

Many thanks Denzel! This chapter is by far the most intense part of their life together that I have written about. The whole story was intense but this was the most emotional. It gets lighter after this though. Glad you enjoyed it!

This episode was full with emotions and tension. Bringing Lucy back for the process to Mac forgive himself was really a great idea!
The momment when Fenn found him was a reaper, I can truly say. But I must confess, I could died for to hear this lines from Fenn's mouth:
“I wouldn’t try that if I were you. He could rip your leg clear off your body if he wanted to. The only reason he hasn’t is because I haven’t given the order.”
My mind wondering a bit ahead, if he will kill her, and hoped he will, so I was really happy about her bullet. ^^
    Was great Jon! :)

Aye this was an emotional wringer. it always bothered me about Ducan and Lucy. So important to Mac but you never see Duncan and Mac ... I would think he would take the cure to him. I am working with Shelley to maybe create a quest add-on to visit Duncan for the game. Some day maybe. For now doing the visions in his coma seemed the best way to bring some closure to that part of his life.So I was glad I had a chance to do it.

Aye those scientists had to go. Fenn wasn't about to let them off.

That is very well written and also has power in it. I liked your "alternate world" where Mac's wife told him to go back. On many occasions I've read and heard that this has actually happened to people who had the same experience that Mac had. You told it convincingly. It's good to see him join up with Fenn, who, indeed needs him more at the moment, and let's not forget dogmeat also,...
Great shots also, following nicely in the pace of the story,..

Thanks again for coming back to write and read the story.

My grandmother had a heart attack and said while she was out she saw her husband and my two brothers waiting for her across a field. Regardless of what is behind all that the thing is people do see those things. So I figured Mac, in his coma, might experience a critical life issue during that time and possibly come to some peace in the process. Whether it was real or his imagination doesn't matter in the end as the important thing is he reached some closure.

Between you and me, however, since this is my world, I will say a certain large wolf allowed Mac and Lucy's souls to have a chance to connect again and it wasn't his imagination :)

Such a powerful moment when I read and saw Fenn over Mac's body on the ground. I felt so helpless and overwhelmed that I cried. As your story continued, the emotion I felt only grew stronger. Tears were in my eyes as I finished this portion of your story. I will remember this moment for a long time.

Many thanks! I was trying to convey that sense of deep emotion. I know it was emotional for me to write even though I knew how it would work out. Always hard to put beloved characters through such things. At least for me.

Well, this was an intense and moving chapter, excellent job on the narrative and images, Jon. I need to sip some catmint beer to settle down and de-fluff my fur after this episode.

Thanks FBC! Was intense to write but felt good when I finally got to the end and could let everyone know things would be okay. Started on chapter 6 already (all the images are done) and finishing up writing. It will be a much lighter chapter than the previous ones.

What a terrifying and bumpy road they took this time! I'm with Heaven, I had this horrible sense of foreboding, even while I admired Fenn for opening, even for a while, the coldness of that professional soldier that it took to get him to Mac. I had no idea, and was afraid as well, that it was possibly an ending...had to wipe my eyes to keep reading, especially when Fenn broke down. Then again, when Mac was getting his closure with Lucy, (what a good woman!) even if he didn't quite recognize it as such. I love all the shots, but the ones of Fenn near breaking, and then Mac embracing him just had me bawling.

    Bravo Jon...just Bravo.

I am glad you made it through all 5 chapters so far (the next one will be much lighter in tone as I think everyone, including the guys, need that). It was hard putting them through all this but Mac has gained some closure and a better understanding, I hope, of himself. In addition he has built up some additional immunities towards other forms of FEV and is perhaps a bit stronger and more resilient from his experience. A little bit of growth for the big guy was what was behind a lot of this. Fenn also gained some confidence in his abilities and showed he is a force to be reckoned with all on his own.

Thanks again for the wonderful words of support and following the team :)

Horray... I also reached the finish line ... a bit late, but it took me a bit... its hard to read when the sight is blurred from tears... a very intense, sensitive and moving chapter... I know you worked hard on it and it gave you sleepless nights, but it was all worth it... this chapter so much love for a friend and a partner... it lets the reader feel the pain... my heart was bleeding... I really don't know what else to say than thank you for sharing your work... it is, wonderful, awesome ... outstanding.. yah... that it is... so, now I need to dry my face and go to bed

Thank you very much Tanja - for the support, comment, and music help :) You also need to get some more sleep or you will be in a coma like Mac :p

I am a bit drained. I am a bit more like Mac perhaps when it comes to gushing too much emotionally. But I tend to be much closer to Fenn when it comes to being emotional in general. Wild mood swings, temper, highs and lows, all over the place. Consequently I try to keep a lid on them. I have tried writing various styles - Grim and Eric are much more romantic and loving while Fenn and Mac have the bromance thing with the sex and romance being downplayed. Their sex is more raunchy and more about the purely physical aspect of it. Versus Grim and Eric where the sex is spiritual and loving. But both couples have a strong love for their partners so its just a different style.

Thanks Marthos and all three of them love brahmin steaks ... although its a tie between Mac and Dogmeat who loves them the most. Doggo will take his raw :-)

Fenn is willing to show mercy now and then but seldom twice in a row to the same person if they betray his kindness the first time. Granted from the scientists viewpoint he is just a killer ... everything is about perspective. Personally I side with Fenn on this one though :)

What can I say? I write what I think, and right now, through blurry eyes, I tell you that this has been a poignant journey with your guys - all three of them. I didn't really think Mac would....die, but I did wonder what path you would take us on. From an easy beginning, you gently but firmly and then urgently pulled us along. What an emotional ride!

I am wondering how this will change the dynamic of their relationship; I suspect it will change a lot, or maybe things will be brought into focus that Mac & Fenn hadn't been thinking about consciously. But I will happily wait for when you tell us the ending when you're ready.

The pictures were terrific. I especially love the last shot, but that image of Fenn - alone, in the dark, just before he laid his head on Mac's chest....all the pain he had to have been feeling plus the great sense of aloneness, was perfectly captured in that shot.

    Magnificent.

Thanks for both your nice comment and all your support for Mac and Fenn (and Dogmeat of course)! They have a pretty unique relationship all things considered. I am sure Mac may be a bit more open and comfortable with his feelings/emotions now but I doubt he will ever be truly romantic in the sexual sense with Fenn. On the other hand he is more accepting of the idea that he enjoys it, if on a slightly different level then Fenn, so I think it won't bother him as much as it used to. How this will all play out remains to be seen but I have a few ideas.

I am glad you understood that shot I took and why I did it so dark and that way. It was what he was feeling. As if he had lost everything in life that meant something to him (not true of course, he had Dogmeat and friends ... but when grief hits you like that you tend to lose perspective on things ... which I know from personal experience). Mac is his anchor, his partner, his love so seeing him like this was like a mortal blow to Fenn.
