Your version looks a lot more like a future space laser than a firearm at this point. In my opinion it's a bit over-detailed, mass production of firearms generally prohibits lots of extra machining and shaping. It looks cool as hell, but the style is much different.
Brother have you seen the current fo4 10mm pistol? Besides, this is hyperindustrialized nuclear powered america, these designs are supposed to be over the top.
Admittedly this was more of a piece to teach myself how to use Fusion 360 rather than an exercise in clean, careful design. The tools in there are too awesome not to go nuts with all kinds of crazy shapes, joins and fluorishes :D
Hopefully, the SPAS still needs attachments and I'm not sure how well I can match my old texturing style at this point, I might do a pass over the whole thing and modernise it a little bit while I'm at it. Hope I can find a bit more time for modding in the future :)
Not trying to get to hyped, but very excited to hear that you are trying to get back in to modding :) I love your older work from New Vegas and the P220 is amazing too!
well, to play devil's advocate, that is a 11 (?) year old model after all. Can't say if those normals were a common thing back then or it's just bethesda crap as usual but this type of comparison is kinda "mean"
Yeah it's mainly just to highlight how far the process has come in 10+ years, I certainly wasn't doing proper normal maps back then.
I think part reason the general design of it is so blocky and brick-like is due to the consideration of having to actually run on the PS3/Xbox 360. Been quite fun modernising the look of it a little bit. After all, with game art, optimisation needs to always be considered over everything else.
Some of the New Vegas guns did have pretty horrendous auto-generated normals in them that made the asset look worse IMO, the All-American had the *camo pattern* in the normal map >__<
bahaha, maybe they wanted the camo pattern to be an actual literal camo, like with mud and stuff on top LOL. Would certainly be hilarious to see it on an actual gun.

"Awesome"!
I like it.
Are you going to release that SPAS 12 at some point that you were working on a while back?
So do I. So do I.
