About this image

I remade the riot shotgun from New Vegas. I also made a few mods for it as an afterthought.

I'm not happy with the wood furniture. The original didn't look great either. I made polymer furniture as an alternative.

I want advice from artists on how to improve my work (mainly the wooden parts).

When I texture wood, I load up the diffuse texture in photoshop and paste in a wood texture I like. Shape around the wood parts and cut the fat off the new wood texture so it doesn't show up on other parts of the gun. Once it it's shaped and trimmed, desaturate the normal map and paste it onto the diffuse texture. Set the normal to overlay and then darken by about 75%. You'll now notice that the normal you just pasted has shaded details onto the diffuse. Then trim the fat off the desaturated normal map so that it only shades onto the new wood texture. I'd recommend doing some manual erasing/shading onto the new normal map layer you just inserted (I call it the detail layer) so that it looks more realistic. Once you're done, Close the original normal map, and don't save it! Save your diffuse as a .psd document and then save it once again as a .dds. Turn the new .dds document into a normal map and paste it onto the original normal map and then overlay it so it blends. Like the original, cut the fat off so that only the wood parts are edited.. Then save it as a .psd and save it over the original normal map. I haven't textured weapons from Fallout 4 yet, but this is what I did for Skyrim so I assume the same process is applicable here. If not, forget I said anything. Hell I could take a crack at it for you if you want.

Stained and really old/worn looking walnut wood with a slight gloss would look really nice. The metal looks great already, I am definitely looking forward to this.

I would suggest darker looking wood, with maybe some scratches. Too new looking guns always seem to be kinda off.

Or maybe a "Worn" skin that's like you described?

Looks like a pretty good start, but I agree about the wood furniture. It looks synthetic. A darker wood with more visable grain would look better. The wood from the varmint rifle mod looks pretty good for instance.

Looks equally awesome to your Nuclear Flashlight. :D

In my opinion, the wood could use little more wear in some places. Something perhaps as worn as Fallout 4's 10mm pistol for reference.
Also if you're looking for more attachment inspirations, I'd suggesting looking at the Chinese Hawk semi-auto shotguns.
    Regardless, it's looking neat.

Great looking gun, like people mentioned before: There aren't a whole lot of shotguns for Fallout 4. That aside, I suggest you pick a darker wood. Not too dark, but this does look a bit off.

YES! This Shotgun was super fun to use and earn in New Vegas! I can see what you mean about the Wood, but, It doesn't look at all bad. Now all I need is for the Lupara Semi Automatic to be added in the game and I'd be somewhat set.

Nothing wrong with a little creative liberties, you could eschew away from the wood and go for the polymer look if you like. I do agree that the wood looks a little off, but maybe just a different kind of wood, like a more darker, brighter redwood color or even a faded shade like the Fallout 3 Chinese Assault Rifle. Kind of hard to do anything with the Riot Shotgun seeing that it's not clearly based off of any one particular real-life gun.
