Ever since venturing into the Fallout series, I've had trouble getting into Fallout 3, as compared to FNV and FO4. For entirely different reasons, I really enjoy the two later games, and both quickly clicked for me... On the other hand, FO3 has never grabbed me in the same way, and I'm honestly not sure why. I mean, just as with the other two, it has both its positives and negatives, and there's a lot I really like about the game, so this has always baffled me.
However... this is my third character with whom I've lately been traversing the DC Wastes, because I wanted to give it another chance.. And, so far, it's been a lot of fun this time around. So.. *fingers crossed*

    I played the FO games as they were released (never gotten the first two installments) and as such never had the 'disadvantage' of retrograding in engine limitations and graphical quality.  FNV and FO4 aren't limiting the player's movements too much while in FO3 there's whole areas you can't go through just to force you to make a wide circumventing move to get to a place only a few paces from where you started off.  I also find FO3's map kinda confusing and harder to navigate than FNV or FO4.

    The Greenskins look better in FO3 though.  At least, to me.

    I liked FO3 when it was released and had tons of fun with it.  I went back to FO3 a while ago to attack it with mods and found the game less appealing after having spent half a lifetime in FO4.  FNV was okay.  But the storyline was too limiting to my taste, especially when talking to some of the factions while knowing stuff they didn't know without an option to tell them anything.  You often had to go through things as if other things you did before never happened.

      Yeah.... movement generally, and the map around DC, in particular drive me crazy. Indeed, that was what made me abandon my first play-through...tediously frustrating and counter-intuitive.  I do enjoy the atmosphere of the tunnels, but they should be there as an organic part of the game, NOT as the sole means of circumnavigating certain parts of the map. Though, to be absolutely fair, part of my problem here is strictly personal, since I suffer from claustrophobia.

      I agree that certain aspects of FNV's storyline were limiting, but because of the wide array of choices and generally good writing, I can live with that. Similarly, I wish FO4 had more varied dialogue options that allowed for more RP, but I feel they did a good job with most of the companions, and with the legitimately open world exploration. (FO4's graphics and combat are more enjoyable as well, but I typically try to avoid comparing things like that when there's such a gap in publication dates)

      As I said, I'm actually quite enjoying this run through FO3, but, even with mods, I have a much harder time ignoring its weaknesses than I do with FNV and FO4.

    Sometimes you can't pin it down to one particular thing.
    The environment, or the story perhaps - maybe the pacing or quests.

    Personally, F4 never 'clicked' for me, I played through it once and that was enough for me.
    (maybe even that was too much, since I feel that none of it is canon...)
    While I have hundreds of hours in both F3 and FNV.

      That's true, and, admittedly, environment and story both play a significant part for me. I tend to really enjoy desert settings, and I often favour games that are strongly narrative-driven. FO3 has awesome exploration, and easily trumps FNV in this respect, but FNV, I feel, has better writing. And given I place greater priority on narrative than exploration..
      I certainly do get why many people who loved the two earlier games weren't as keen on FO4, and, honestly, I was shocked to discover how much I actually liked it, because after everything I'd read, I wasn't expecting to, at all. For whatever reason, though.. I find it very easy to immerse myself in FO4's world, despite its various flaws.

    Nice job with this character, Sonja!
    I feel the same way towards this game. I played FNV and FO4 long before I ever got around to this one, but the feeling is not quite the same.
    Still, It had a great story line and was enjoyable to play. Like you, I can't quite pinpoint the reason for my attitude toward this game. With all the DLC, it seemed to go on forever.

      Thank you! I'm really happy with the way she turned out. Though, I find, at least when using mods, it is really hard to mess up with Hispanic characters.
      Yeah... It's  weird, and I don't think it's entirely coincidental that I have similar issues with Oblivion. For me, I doubt it's that it goes on forever, given the DLC for the other two games are pretty substantial as well... I feel FO3 just has more of a tendency to drag for some reason. There are specific things I can finger, though:
      * I feel there's a lack of narrative consistency, and some of the moral choices are.....odd. The Blood Ties, and Tenpenny quests would be examples of that. Also, you can't tell Lucy West what happened... and she's the original quest giver for Blood Ties... it feels very ... unfinished, especially considering what happens.
      * FNV and FO4 both feel as though they're pitched to an older audience.
      * The lighting.. Even with mods (much like Oblivion's lighting) it has a slightly cartoonish opacity to it, at least in more overcast weather conditions, which I find somewhat immersion-breaking. It's hard to explain, and I'm not sure if what I'm saying makes any sense, at all.
      * It is hard to construct a unique back story for your character, because the vault is all they've ever known, which definitely limits the possibilities. Sure, FO4 gives you a lawyer/soldier, but there are all kinds of options within that framework.

      Still, that's all pretty vague.... and while I'm certainly enjoying this play-through, half of it is about trying to figure out my reactions.

    First time I viewed a shot of the wasteland with lush grass. I love tall grass and meadows but am wondering if the grass breaks the immersion.  Is a very good looking character you have created and nice shot.

      I understand what you mean, and I do remember initially hesitating about the grass. But, I guess my interpretation ended up being that after 200 years, it seems plausible. I mean, if you look at images from Chernobyl and Hiroshima, they're both very lush. Of course, there are two differences at work, and I'm unsure how they'd balance one another out. On the one hand, Fallout is attempting to portray a global nuclear holocaust, while Hiroshima and Chernobyl were region specific. However, we're also talking 200 years, as opposed to, respectively 75 years and 34 years... It's hard to say, really.
      Thanks! As you'll have gathered, I also use mods for faces, clothes etc., though I try to keep things reasonably lore-friendly in at least those areas.
