About this mod

A Fable TLC port of lautasantenni’s New Greatsword Models mod.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Description:
Fable's original greatswords have their charm, but they look like paddles.
When I saw lautasantenni’s New Greatsword Models mod, I thought it was a huge improvement. This port was done with his permission.

I ported his models from Fable Anniversary to Fable TLC.
I also extracted the Anniversary textures and did some Photoshop magic to get them more in line with the original Fable TLC textures.
Actually, quite a bit of Photoshop magic; all textures, except for the blade of the Solus Greatsword, which was impossible to work with, has been recreated using the original textures, in order to get them as close to the original game as possible.

Installation:
Installing this mod requires Fable Explorer.
The instructions below assume that you have Fable Explorer set up correctly on your machine, but following them requires no deeper knowledge of the software.
  • Launch Fable Explorer.
  • In the top left archive overview, right click textures.big and select Merge BIG.
  • In the Open dialog, choose the corresponding file from this mod (New Greatsword Models - textures.big).
  • Press Open.
The altered entries of this mod will be added to your game archives (the textures.big archive, to be specific).
  • In the top left archive overview, right click graphics.big and select Merge BIG.
  • In the Open dialog, choose the corresponding file from this mod (New Greatsword Models - graphics.big).
  • Press Open.
  • Navigate to Actions => Save Mods and Run Fable.
This will save your archives and run the game.
The mod is now installed, and from this point on you can run the game normally and enjoy the mod.
In the following spoiler tag you will find instructions on how to install version 1.0 of this mod manually.
They are purely here for academic preservation, as it is not recommended that anyone follow these instructions, if at all avoidable.
Read at your own risk.

Installing this mod requires Fable Explorer.
The instructions below assume that you have Fable Explorer set up correctly on your machine, but following them requires no deeper knowledge of the software.

There are two parts of the installation; the textures and the meshes.
  • Launch Fable Explorer.
    Textures:
  • Navigate to File => Load Fable Mod Package.
  • In the Open dialog, choose the file from this mod (New Greatsword Textures.fmp).
  • Press Open.
The altered entries of this mod will be added to your game archives (the textures.big archive, to be specific).
    Meshes:
The meshes are a little more involved. See the note above for an explanation.
  • Enter the graphics.big archive.
  • Optionally using the Search function (located in the top menu bar), locate one of the following entries;
    MESH_SWORD_GREAT_LEGENDARY_01
    MESH_SWORD_GREAT_BRASS_01
    MESH_SWORD_GREAT_IRON_01
    MESH_SWORD_GREAT_SHADOW_01
    MESH_SWORD_GREAT_STEEL_01
(If you use the search function and search for sword_great you will find them in the order listed. This is what I suggest.)
You will have to modify each of these entries following the following substeps:
    • Open one of the entries listed above.
This opens a window with a spinning preview model.
    • Navigate to the Materials tab.
    • Select the topmost material.
    • Make a note of the number in the Base Texture ID textbox.
    • Press the Load button, in order to load one of the new models.
    • In the Open window, navigate to the appropriate model from this mod (an .x file with the same name as the entry you are editing).
    • Press Open.
The model is now loaded in Fable Explorer.
If you navigate to the Preview tab, you will see that the preview model has changed.
    • On the Materials tab, on the only material in the list, set Base Texture ID to what it was before loading the new model, set Max Texture Layers to 1, and press Apply Changes.
Important: There are two Apply Changes buttons in the window, you have to press the one on the Materials tab.
    • Repeat substep 5 to 8 for each of the LODs (except the last one, which should remain empty) in the Select LOD dropdown.
    • Press the other Apply Changes button, located above the Load button, to save your changes to the entry.
It can be a good idea to quickly go through each LOD to see that the preview model looks alright.
Likewise, it can be a good idea to close and re-open the entry to see that the changes have indeed been saved correctly.
  • Navigate to Actions => Save Mods and Run Fable.
This will save your archives and run the game.
The mod is now installed, and from this point on you can run the game normally and enjoy the mod.

Note: Regardless of installation method, if you Verify integrity of game files through steam your archives will be reset, and you will have to install the mod again.

Technical stuff:
In addition to the model being of higher detail than the original, I only have one model. I did not feel like doing a lot of work that would not matter, so each sword only has one level of detail (LOD). What this means is essentially that no matter how far the camera is from the model, the full model will be rendered. There are two reasons why this does not matter.
  • I do not think that greatswords are ever wielded by anyone but the player, meaning the full model will always be used anyway, since the camera is always close to the player character.
  • Even if the above was not true, on modern hardware any drop in performance from the use of this mod should be imperceptible.
It would be dishonest to pretend that there was no risk of performance loss from using the mod, however, as stated above, this is largely theoretical.

Credit:
All credit for the greatsword models (as well as the thumbnail) in this mod goes to lautasantenni. This port was made with his permission.
Furthermore, the Fable Modders' Guild Discord channel was a huge help in figuring out how Fable Explorer works.
Thanks in particular to Discord member odarenkoas, for his tip on how to merge .big files instead of relying on the manual installation method. Truly priceless input.

Other Versions:
Be sure to check out lautasantenni's original New Greatsword Models mod for Fable Anniversary.
This mod is also available for Fable Anniversary on the Steam Workshop (in pieces, due to how the workshop works): Iron, Steel, Obsidian, Master, and Solus Greatsword.
