WHAT IS FABLE: AEON EDITION?

Fable: Aeon Edition is a complete overhaul mod of Fable TLC, inspired by Fable Anniversary: REDUX, an overhaul mod I created for Fable Anniversary. Due to TLC having less limitations when it comes to modding, this mod is a lot more ambitious and has more features. It's also better balanced! A full changelog has been provided, but here are a list of the main changes:

  • A complete rebalance of the game (very much like REDUX for those of you who've played it). This includes armour values, player and enemy resistances, enemy spawns, item prices, augmentations and general difficulty.
  • Reworked Demon Doors. Some have custom minibosses and the ones that don't have new gimmicks/decorations.
  • Changes to quests! Some quests will now feature an Optional Encounter somewhere else in Albion. This will be explained in the summary of the Quest. (so always remember to check your Quest Log!)
  • Cut content has been restored and repurposed.
  • Mods from FableTLCMod have been implemented (and credited in the readme)
  • NPCs drop their weapons, as well as vendor trash and trophies.
  • New enemies, augmentations, food, potions and more!
  • Changes to level and world design. This includes larger-scale things like fixing the Greatwood Lake bridge and smaller-scale things like editing the interiors of houses. Item and chest placement have been altered as well. There are also new chests to find and open.
  • 17 Silver Keys have been moved.
  • Quality of life changes (slower ageing, horns no longer cause baldness, some expressions no longer make you sheathe weapons etc.)

IS AEON EDITION FIXED NOW?

It's as stable as it's ever going to be! While Aeon Edition was in beta, quite a few people mentioned the possibility of the instability being caused by something in the text.big file. I wasn't convinced until I finally took a look and realised that there were some useless entries. I deleted them and now the game is stable (not 100% perfect but a lot better than it used to be)! Instead of having to constantly load the same save until it stops crashing, the game just loads immediately more or less every time. No matter if I use a new profile or an older one from a previous mod version!

I can't guarantee it'll be as smooth sailing for everyone else (especially if you're on a lower-end system), but most people should be able to now have a relatively stress-free playthrough! Any issues should now only be caused by user error, low specs or just the fact Fable's a nearly 20 year old game.

WHAT CAN I DO IF IT DOESN'T WORK?

Most of these solutions were only necessary for the beta, but if you are still having issues, then these potential solutions may help:

  • Run the game in compatibility mode (xp service pack 2 OR Windows 7, try both)
  • Ensure high DPI override is set to application
  • Run the game in x16 as opposed to x32 (I've noticed this helps with lighting in places like Darkwood)
  • If you get flickering lighting, switch it to x32 and then back to x16
  • Run the game off the integrated graphics from the CPU as opposed to the GPU
  • Run the game as administrator
  • Run the game from the exe as opposed to through Steam*
  • Repair your Virtual C++ installation
  • Lower the graphics/resolution (if you've got a beefy PC, then you shouldn't have to do this, but it's worth a go)

*I only had to do this with the beta. In 1.0. I'm now using Steam as normal and it's been fine

If you still have no luck, I can try to help you myself, but I may not be able to! There's also a (fairly inactive) Discord server if you want to ask stuff there.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Will this work with Anniversary?
A: No. And Fable Anniversary: REDUX won't work with TLC.

Q: I don't know how to use freeroam/your level changes aren't showing up.
A: Use this guide to help: https://steamcommunity.com/app/204030/discussions/0/864943421895490106. There should be a

in Maze's chambers. If it's not there, you did something wrong. To test everything else, eat a Blueberry Pie at the Guild. It should give exp and slightly raise your health and will bars.

Q: Is this a difficulty mod?
A: Not really, but it is harder than base game (especially early on). I've played through it without dying at least twice and I'm not a pro gamer or anything, but YMMV. If you're finding it too hard, play cautiously and use every tool in your arsenal.

Q: Is this recommended for beginners/first time players?
A: Sure, but I feel like you'll appreciate this more if you've already played Fable before. You might also struggle more with early-game if you don't already vaguely remember how to play.

Q: Where are the new silver key locations and where are the dolls?
A: There's a file in the Guide folder with locations!

Q: How on earth are you meant to open the Greatwood Caves Demon Door?
A: The Combat Multiplier requirement is now 25! A good strategy is to go somewhere with lots of high level enemies, make sure to have Greatwood Caves as the recall point, and go to town with Adrenaline Potions and/or Physical Shield.

Witchwood Stones is a good place to try. Get a weapon with 3 or more Silver Augmentations and melt the Balverines there (including white ones) in one hit!

Q: Is this compatible with _______?
A: Probably not, and I'm not offering any support if you install two overhaul mods at the same time and break the game! FableMenu and my Fable: The Silly Chapters mod pack are both compatible though.

Q: Will you be updating this mod anymore?
A: Who can say? I want to say "no, I don't want to keep tinkering with Aeon Edition forever", but I know what I'm like. I love modding and coming up with new ideas. But I'm not promising anything either way!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Thank you for all the support. This mod (like REDUX) started off as a little modding project just for my own enjoyment. I initially had no plans of releasing any Fable mods, but I'm glad I did. The response from the Fable community has been incredible, and I really appreciate all the kind comments, donations and general feedback. If you've never played before, I hope you enjoy yourself and that this mod makes you feel the way you did when you played Fable for the first time (even if only a little).
