About this mod
For me, texture modding of games looks to be a good if not the best start. When it comes to pure picture replacement it's rather simple.
All you need for Elex (2) is two tools, a compressor (nvcompress), a packer (elex2resman for E2) and some gimp or mspaint skills.

For me, texture modding of games looks to be a good if not the best start. When it comes to pure picture replacement it's rather simple.
All you need for Elex (2) is two tools, a compressor (nvcompress), a packer (elex2resman for E2) and some gimp or mspaint skills.
The smart approach arises from the fact that I provide 11 names of picture textures here,
possible names:
Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Vertical_A_01_Al.elex2img upto Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Vertical_A_05_Al.elex2img
and
Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Horizontal_A_24_Al.elex2img upto Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Horizontal_A_28_Al.elex2img
and
Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Horizontal_A_31_Al.elex2img
There's also a whole bunch of posters:
Tex_Dec_Old_Poster_Horizontal_A_01_Al upto _A_25_Al
and
Tex_Dec_Old_Poster_Vertical_A_01_Al upto _A17_Al
and
Tex_Dec_Old_Poster_Vertical_B_01_Al upto _B27_Al
The funny thing is that you only need to rename your png/jpg picture, compress it to .dds, convert it to .elex2img then pack it into a mod.
Straigthforward. No knowledge required which mesh uses which material and which textures.
(These three witches, öhm, whiches usually are a matter of deeper research.)
Now
---------
get the compressor from here: castano, nvidia-texture-tools
From "releases" download nvidia-texture-tools-2.1.2-win.zip
George updated the original Elex 1 elexresman, author: Baltram
for Elex 2: elex2resman
Now for the steps:
- Find/create a 512x1024 png (or .jpg) of your choice.
If you want to use a 1024x512 picture then rename it to Tex_Dec_Old_Painting_Horizontal_A_28_Al.png
- Use nvcompress to convert the png to dds (drag&drop).
- Then drag'n drop the resulting dds file onto the elex2resman. Results in an elex2img file.
- In your mod folder create a sub folder "Image" (without the quotes).
- Copy said elex2img into it and drag 'n drop the mod folder onto the elex2resman.
This should result in a pak file being created.
(alternatively you could use m_9_MyMod.pak from the zip file)
Installation
----------------
- copy <your_mod_name>.pak to the folder
[MyDrive:]\Steam\steamapps\common\ELEX2\data\packed
- Start the game, head to the location shown on the E2_pic_replace_on_map.jpg (Bastion).
(If you used ..Horizontal_A_28_Al then look at Horizontal_A_28-Tex_on_map.jpg, Castle)
If your picture doesn't show up you may have too many mod pak files "installed".
Or there's two mods in conflict (changing the same file, for example).
[uninstall]: delete that pak file
