Sword Mastery is a mod that aspires to be semi-HEMA accurate. It is a COMPLETE and UTTER TRANSFORMATION of the combat system in Elden Ring.
Bosses have been changed to be faster and more aggressive. This is not to say the mod is easier or harder, but an entirely new way to play Elden Ring.
This mod is compatible with "SEAMLESS CO-OP", information on how to achieve this can be found within the discord.

This is very much a WORK IN PROGRESS mod that still has a lot to do, and a lot you see here will be changed and configured in the future.

How To Install

1. Download Mod Engine 2, follow the guide given: https://github.com/soulsmods/ModEngine2/releases

2. Download the Mod Loader, follow the guide given: https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/117

3. Download the zip file from the Nexus Page or(For Betas), you will need to have 7zip or winrar for this

4. Extract the contents of the zip into your Elden Ring folder, this will be a "mod" folder, put it into the "ELDEN RING/game" folder

5. You're done and should be ready to go, launch the game via the "launchmod_eldenring.bat" from here on out



Major Changes - General

Combat has been entirely overhauled, every weapon will have new move set branches triggered by combining light and heavy attacks in different order. Also a new mechanic "deflections" and "clashing" has been introduced.

Bosses have been overhauled to make more sense for the overhauled gameplay, including a new "Perilous" attack system which you can recognise from games like Sekiro.

The Camera has been overhauled in a multitude of situations as base game Elden Ring had many issues when it came to the camera direction during fights with different enemies and bosses.

Combat

Deflection System Deflecting is similar to a Sekiro Deflect or a "Perfect Block" from other games. Block at the right time and you will take 100% reduced physical damage and 70% reduced status build-up. Deflect time is symbolized by the "Buff Body" (Baldachin's Blessing) icon.

Weapon Clashing - During the swings of some weapons, the "Buff Body" (Baldachin's Blessing) icon will appear, similar to when you are deflecting. However the timing is a lot tighter and has a lot less benefits. Clashing occurs when both you and an enemy swing at the same time. Whoever lands their attack first will carry on whilst the other will go through with the deflect animation. 

True Clashing: True Clashing occurs in some weapon combo chains and is determined by a second darker icon under your health bar and will normally occur after the second attack of a combo chain. This can force some enemies to break their attack chain such as; Margit/Morgott, Radagon and Malenia. It will seem like a parry but it's not. Clashing does NOT give you any form of immunity to perilous attacks and will hurt all the same.


Perilous AttacksPerilous Attacks are impossible to Deflect, and players will be notified of a Perilous Attack by them glowing white shortly before the boss swings/shoots. Upon successful dodge of a Perilous Attack, one may chain into a Guard Counter. Perilous attacks do 1.2x raw damage, all main bosses utilize these perilous attacks. 

Player Perilous Attacks: Players can cause their own perilous attacks by charging a default heavy or by using a heavy jumping attack, this is dependant on weapon weight. You know if you've been successful in initiating a PPA if your target glows white, be cautious as these are very easy to parry. Unlike PAs, a PPA only does 1.2x raw damage.

Dodging -  Dodging has been reworked slightly. Light dodge forward is a Sekiro Step, sideways dodges are Bloodborne steps, and backwards dodging is a Quickstep.  Mid class dodging is the same, but forward dodge is a roll.
Heavy dodge and over encumbered are untouched

Light dodges get a step-dodge on their first dodge, only these can perform Perilous Dodges / Counters and any roll or flip will not work in this regard. 

USED THE BLESSED DEW TALISMAN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WORRY ABOUT ENCUMBERANCE, THIS WILL MAKE YOU LIGHT!!!

Weapon Combos- Weapon Combos have been entirely overhauled and changed, each weapon to a varying degree of completion. All combos in Sword Mastery function on a branching system.

For example, Katana combos in Sword Mastery are;
R1, R2 (tap), R2 (tap)
R1, R2 (hold), R2 (hold)
R1, R1, R2 (tap), R2 (tap)

Whether a weapon can do a hold R2 is determined by a white glimmer, and whether the combo itself can continue is dependant if the red fire is there.
Experiment with combos and different infusions to see what happens!


Each weapon will eventually be pretty unique and special with attributes and traits you may not be able to identify by eye or gameplay alone, and in turn a detailed change-log and or videos will come in the future, but for now - if you have any questions on your favourite weapon, come check out the discord mentioned above.



Dynamic Camera

Almost all bosses have a Dynamic Camera that changes dependant on what the boss is doing, this is a pretty minor change but is a real spectacle to behold during a fight.

Soft Dynamic Camera: A WIP that has the Blessed Dew Talisman give you an effect that will zoom out your camera when near big (like Trolls) enemies. Will be enhanced in 1.17.


Damage Rebalances

Major Damage Type Rebalance. Due to the player character's increased speed, strength, versatility. etc... as well as the emphasis on HEMA and realism, the enemies of Elden Ring have had their damage resistance changed slightly.
Armored enemies are tougher to kill with slashing weapons, however using heavy weapons or weapons designed to fight against armor like Greathammers and Halberds will slowly dent their armor, reducing their physical defense and absorbances.
For unarmored enemies, they will be weaker to fire and slashing weapons. Slashing weapons such as the sword, katana, greatsword, etc... will cause tremendous bleed damage to fleshy targets.


Ash of War Changes


Major Ashes of War Changes. Unsheathe, Square Off, and New Square Off have been changed. Unsheathe will now allow you to advance in katana combo chains. Square Off has been changed so that the r2 is a dodge. New Square Off allows for the switching between one and two handing your sword (and shield) and unlocks one hand sword and shield combo chains.

A new Ash of War replacing Carian Grandeur has been added, called "Spell Cast". Hold a seal in your hand and cast a spell. The player character will move the seal to their head, memorizing the spell for use. Then, tap L2 to cast your memorized spell. Spells do not need to be rememorized to use consecutively.

A new Ash of War replacing Glintstone Pebble has been added, called "Glinstone Pommel". Press L2 to energize your pommel with glintstone and throw it at an enemy. Then press R2 to follow up with a leaping strike, Ending your opponent Rightly. 

Many more changes will happen to Ashes of War, many of them won't appear here and will be for you to discover yourself! However, they will be added to the changelog that will be created eventually.


Infusion Changes


Unique infusions effects. There are unique infusions that may change a weapon's playstyle.

Heavy infusions now increase the weapon class of a weapon. Dagger -> sword !!! sword -> greatsword !!! greatsword -> colossal sword !!! curved sword -> curved greatsword, etc...

Keen infusions enable a Iaijutsu Quickdraw, where if a Keen weapon is held in the left hand, and a weapon of a different class, such as a catalyst or a whip, is held in the right, the player performs a Iaijutsu Quickdraw that can Deflect an incoming attack. After the quickdraw, the player will be two-handing the Keen weapon.

Quality infusions now enable certain weapons to become Blocking Left Hand weapons. These weapons may only be held in the left hand and can enable certain special 1H combos on weapons such as swords, curved swords, and hammers. These weapons can also be used with some of the curved greatsword's 2H combos.

Fire infusions now change the heavy attacks of some weapons (spears, daggers, swords, greatswords) to be a flaming thrust, where the weapon emits flames while thrusting. For weapons where it would be impractical for that to happen, such as maces and greataxes, the heavy attack is now a flame breath.

Flame Art infusions now stack damage. For every Deflect and attack you do, you lose 20 points of physical damage but gain 40 points of fire damage. This effect stacks and lasts for 7 seconds. The added fire damage is also present when Deflecting, thus making it Malenia, Blade of Miquella's natural enemy, as she attacks very quickly.

Lightning infusions now always have the weapon glow like lightning grease or Lightning Slash has been applied to it. If you don't like this look, just use Lightning Slash or a lightning grease and when that effect expires, the weapon returns to normal. Cycle the weapon away and back and the visual effect will return. Will make this feature a bit better later.

Magic weapons will now regenerate 3% of your FP over 3 seconds upon a successful Deflect or attack.

Cold weapons will now make you far more resistant to all status effects other than Cold.

Occult weapons are able to use an enhanced two-handing move set that contains three combos in one; when equipped in the right hand and infused with Occult, enables the use of 2 distinct power-stance move sets that can be seamlessly switched between using neutral heavy attacks. It does not matter what weapon is equipped in the left hand.
