INTRODUCTION TO "TAMED COLORS" MODS FOR DRAGON QUEST XI

When i first saw the DQXI hero look i thought "omg he is really dull, and what the f... is this crazy color choices ?! ... i don't know if i can play this without thinking about it too much."
1 hour later of playing, my controller was on the ground, game on pause, i was already browsing on web some way to mod Dragon quest XI to make my own texture haha ! I started with the hero but i plan to do all palyable characters. I am not an expert of DQXI modding so if there are some loading flaws ... that's on me. But i will update them if i find any improvment or fixes.

"Tamed Colors" Retexturing is a theme i decided to embrace for Dragon Quest XI. The spirit is : bring back sobriety, class, some "dark" aspect, and no rainbow or "power rangers" multi-color which make your eyes bleed and give you nausea. If you love what i did on this one, you might found other mods i made on that same theme.

CONTENT SUMMED UP

- New balanced Colors for the katana shaped weapon "Nightcleaver". I love japanese swords, i just couldn't help saving this baby from the mighty rainbowshit choice of color dragon quest game designers gave us. I chose a "gunome" for its hamon (temper line) to make it more real. Colors Tamed very hard here, desaturated, realistic and sober. I won't quote all improvements i made here, it would be long but i hope you katana lovers are satisfied as much as i am now !

- The B version is with the saya (scabbard) red-brownish called "ocre" in my language. It's an usual color for saya's a bit less sad than all black.

Here is the challenge i put myself in : i won't change main weapon until the end of the game ! (since im sure the rest of two handed swords are uglier than this one)

INSTALLATION TIPS (MANUAL ONLY)

WARNING : THIS MOD REQUIRE "KALDIEN'S SPECIAL K" MOD TO WORK. Please click here for more details

- Have Special K mod installed (its folder just dropped in SteamApps\common\Dragon Quest XI\Game\Binaries\Win64)
- Unzip the texture mod to SteamApps\common\Dragon Quest XI\Game\Binaries\Win64\SK_Res\inject\textures
- Each of these texture has to be unique, you can't count two of the same #.dss if so the game textures will glitch or crash. You don't have to follow my chaotic folder tree, just rearrange your own if you are lost with all the files. The only thing important is : never have dupplicates and not get lost !
- In game, texture will sometimes not display immediatly (Almost inevitable if you have many, it's not my fault, but the texture system in the game is a completly dumb and non mod-friendly) so make these extra steps each time it occurs :

- hit ctrl + shift + backspace to make the SK interface pop.
- hit the red button : "Render mod tools", another window will pop.
- Without closing these, on background go in equipement menu and display the character on which the textures are glitching or not replaced.
- come back on second SK window and hit the button : Reload all injected textures, you should now have seen in the background the textures applying !
- If you have issues on everyone, repeat on each. (you have to display each one in the background, meaning hitting multiple times the reload button).
- When it's done, it's good to go ! close the SK UI and enjoy your game ! : D

Small explanation here (my guess) : The game start with displaying all his native texture files in cache (Textures of all sizes). The largest size texture file (which is always those in my mods) will have a superior display priority and supplant the rest if you do all these steps, you force the game to stay on the largest size texture file (so the modded ones) and do everything with it, even FoD/LoD's. But remember it's not like that when you just start your game, this need that "Reload all injected textures" to be pressed on the equipement menu, which is where the largest texture file is displayed and can be isolated ! Hope you get why you need to do that !
