Just wondering where to find the default portraits in DAI Mod Maker? Or do you already have a portrait made, and just need to figure out how to get it into the game? Check out my Tutorial - Adding a Custom Portrait to Inquisition.
You can install and automatically update to the latest versions of Mod Maker and Mod Manager with the DAITools Suite Loader from DawnlessSky.
The link to the tutorial to add custom portraits doesn't seem to work anymore. I could've sworn it was working just a couple months ago. Is there anything you can do to relink it or repost it please?
Here's the page with opening subheaders, as of 27/6/2024 it is still up. https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/daitools/tutorial-adding-a-custom-inquisitor-portrait-to-in-t805.html
For those that only wish to use Frosty for your game, there is also a FrostyEditor version of this mod/tutorial by JohhnyY. https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonageinquisition/mods/3524
It worked! Thank you. Great tutorial for both portrait creating and adding it as a new mod.
Only thing missing was that I needed to install SlimDX (https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3802785-mod-maker-wont-show-preview-and-importexport/, https://code.google.com/archive/p/slimdx/downloads) in order to get working version of DAI Mod Maker (this was my first mod, so I did not have a working instance of Mod Maker before). Just a hint for someone else that never used DAI Mod Maker before.
Ok, so as far as I can tell, I've followed the steps to the letter. Moreover, everything goes smoothly all the way up until I try to "Copy" and "Paste as New Layer" the Merged portrait into the template. The Background transfers, but not the Foreground which have been MERGED! Also, when I move the merged image, it moves as one, but the Inquisitor is still shrouded in Scissor lines and CANNOT be altered by any tool. I'm lost.
Is there a way that I can do this with Photoshop? Like, I've done most of the work, but I want to make sure that it all matches up for the requirements for the game. Could you release photoshop versions? Is that even possible? Please forgive the ignorance concerning how this all works on my part.
Here is what I have so far, if it helps( .... how tf do I embed a link in this post?): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zLWJ7uj7h8RMaN7hvI2dEem-z0bcDcta2Qc69hTrylC1nxKi1gLSiYwqawXGpl0JycDSViKniTDdwD3UrSCEgBuilTifaZHMltF9L2slabJWGqAATn0_QQVb43idqAXLP0aiUfgUB4vlWvyQ7L0nZVCDm6Z2RlSJ1Jh7bM3lnZJoyKYAqis7VV_HXp2-Dg4FI4NJkBy2ocs0SJ7aN0aN1QF_Uhx_Fwg916AEt0R92-FJx4Hr9gD2ZG8xGV0ovtokogiZi1CH8MzaBEnMo7ILpBehZ_hUq-s_wAXm8S4MHlFrIV42Xp-RBrwVpdLIMtTZA0vvzoY8wpu_lRs3fRCJbf3wjSnrnIWZE-8O4q8hErhzJpzqr7vXvgTabbVuowh0Wkkc6GQ6Bf0GsE7R9HIjmWDk27hToaMv8MMYmX-FkjRABhOmyN9JXZRXHu_LzChfN4hUCtvtKTenHpA_kfAjQsYrTp4qzfk2rjSoxzHl7qiHzxjdOBjG8IR6C1qWRPFoWZot4AEKUCY-klA8j0g3Z5SVcrQbSUcjEYWi-MCImgUrXeIuj9UqaM7K5Tx6J-T0rHkwWj2ETeCkeuIMa5w-uoQDtEi2lADneHnKNEtHROMX_Bf0_Q_f86lQGYLEY32ED80OpmMD4Pgk511ZhSaPxN09A1JeGv44=s104-no
We'll see if that actually shows up as clickable... there's no toolset with this text box, and I'm only semi-computer-savvy.
Thanks for the awesome guide, but for some reason it doesn't work for me. :/ I've successfully finished the portraits files, and created a .DAIMOD file, but when I load a save game I always stuck in the loading screen. If I delete my portrait mod the game work just fine. Can someone help me?
I'm using GIMP 2.8 and exporting as DDS BC3/DXT5 with no mipmaps.
My DDS files: https://drive.google.com/open?id=18_W0wyK2kWO9nNWBmL3_xIj6LtrhGI_B
I'm at a loss... I've been trying to import a dds for a custom portrait I made (DXT5 without mipmaps) and it just doesn't seem to work. The mod builds just fine. The problem is as soon as I try loading a game with the mod, this happens:
I have tried the same making a mod with one of the dds you provided on another file for the female elf inquisitor, and it loaded just fine... so it's something in my export I guess... Tried exporting with photoshop, gimp and even downloaded converters. But I can't seem to make it work. Any idea of what is happening?
EDIT: Here are my files, just in case anyone wishes to check:
I'm actually having a 100% identical problem! Did you ever find a solution?
[EDIT] I broke down and ended up installing GIMP and the dds plugin for that and then exporting my PSDs though GIMP as DDS files and it actually worked! It's kinda a hassle having to open GIMP just to save something out, but at least I got the mod working. I'm 99% sure it's a problem with the NVIDIA DDS plugin for Photoshop since I"m actually using Creative Cloud and apparently that can cause the plugin to misbehave.
Some people have had luck installing the plugin directly into the program folder with photoshop.exe and installing both the 64bit & the 32bit versions, but I don't have the energy to try that now atm since I have a workaround.
Same problem here :cc also tried another premade human Inquisitor portrait mod but this time it's just stuck on an infinite loading screen. I'm not the best with these things so I'm at a loss.
EDIT: I started having this issue and eventually got it to work, but I'm not sure what fixed it, so I'm going to log my issues and what I did in case someone else can get some use out of it.
TLDR: Just...try turning your computer off and on again, possibly multiple times. You'll know if the portrait will work (i.e. not CTD and give a DirectX error message) if clicking "preview" after importing it into ModMaker shows the image and not a black box.
I'm using GIMP 2.8 and exporting as dds DXT5 no mipmaps.
Importing the healthy portrait (Atlas0) into ModMaker worked fine. Importing the injured portrait (Atlas3) gave the message that it had been successfully imported, but when "preview" was clicked it said there was an issue rendering textures and only displays a black box. No errors when saving as a new mod in ModMaker or when compiling with ModManager, but loading a save in Inquisition with the mod caused it to crash to desktop with an error message saying there was an issue with NVIDIA/DirectX. Things I did that had no effect: redownloading GIMP, GIMP's dds plugin, or SlimDX; exporting as dds with mipmaps or DXT1 or DXT3 codecs; rolling back to version 16 of ModMaker; converting to dds using online converters.
Then, I shut down and came back the next day to test it out. I had multiple healthy (Atlas0) pngs from previous portrait mods, and I converted all to dds using GIMP. Importing the first I converted into ModMaker worked fine, but the second and third gave a black box, so the issue seemed to be that GIMP could only export one file correctly in succession, and that there was no issue with the injured file specifically. Importing two dds files into ModMaker that I successfully used in those previous portrait mods worked, so the issue seems to be with GIMP exporting dds files and not with ModMaker.
Then, I exited GIMP and ended its background processes, then reopened it and tried converting pngs again. No dice, every dds file exported gave a black box when previewed in ModMaker, even the first.
Then, I restarted. Still no dice, every dds, even the first, gave a black box.
Then, I shut down completely and turned the computer back on. Every dds file worked! No black boxes, I made 4 to test things and they all worked.
So, shutting down the first time resulted in one successful export only, restarting resulted in all failures, and shutting down a second time resulted in all successes.

I tried your dropbox link but there's nothing there. If you still want a portrait, give me a link to your files and I'll make it for you.
Edit: IF I only edit Atlas0, and then save it etc... it works, I will try with Atlas03 again, maybe this is the culprit...
