Dragon Age: Inquisition

About this mod

Another one… No… Another two mods for those players who are disappointed with how the designers/artists of the game imagine the hair color that is supposed to be the darkest one. This time for Cassandra & Dorian.

What is it?  Why & For What?
It seems the original hair colors Cassandra, Josephine, Dorian, and also some lesser characters have were conceived as black or something nearly black. But the shades we see in the game are strangely pale and moreover are supplemented with that absolutely unnatural ( for humans at least ) bluish tinge. They just can't be taken as black tints!
And while minor NPCs may look quite normally with that "special BioWare's kind of black" as theirs hair color ( as they have eyebrows and scalp hair drawn in the separate textures of the different parts of the heads or the separate texture layers, that cover the facial skin textures and can be tinted in the same way as the aside modelled hair textures ), the mentioned major characters look somehow wrong, first and foremost because they have unique face complexions with eyebrows and scalp hair ( as well as all the other facial features ) drawn directly in the whole textures of theirs heads, and the colors of these drawn on the skin hair are rather different from the colors of represented by 3D models hair. Also, grey-blue hair colors look even dimmer with Josie's and Dorian's tan and warm skin tones…
The claim of the mods like these is to remove such discrepancies, giving each character natural look but at the same time keeping lore appearance.

What does this do exactly?  &  How does it work?
These two particular modifications change the Cassandra's and Dorian's hair colors from the original dark pale grey-blue to a true dark, nearly black, brown color with a barely noticeable very dark cherry red tint for Cass and a very similar, but slightly grayish, saturated brown ( very dark hazel or something like that ), which also has a barely noticeable olive green tint, for Dorian.
These mods affect only the modelled hair ( I mean those which are represented by individual models, separate from the model representing the main part of the head ). Namely, in the case of Dorian, his hair on the top of the head and his moustache with that little… er… that little piece of beard. And these mods don't touch the face-and-scalp textures in any way, so that they don't affect eyebrows and scalp hair, visible on the sides.
The thing done is achieved by editing only the color values amongst hair models data, NOT by altering meshes or textures themselves ( these data are stored in EBX files, not RES ), so these mods should be compatible with any other mods, as long as they don't do the exactly same thing.
… I am completely satisfied with the Vanilla companions' complexions. Consequently, I do not replace them ( and ain't going to replace ). And, as you probably know, there is an already existing another mod here on NEXUS that changes the Dorian's hair color to a truly black, but, in my opinion, that color is too dark and vibrant, especially in comparison with his Vanilla eyebrows and scalp hair color, and therefore looks unnatural. An alternative for Cassandra ( from « Dat Cass » ) is also present. I do not accept it for the same reason. Choosing the colors, I was trying to find a balance: not to make their hair too dark and noticeably mismatching in color with brows and scalp hair and not to make their hair too light and inconsistent too much with the Vanilla design for them to be black or blacklike.
Please keep in mind as well that the giving by these mods tints seeming varies depending on the current area lightning conditions: the hair looks more orangish or even yellowish brown in warmer light like in Crestwood, on the Exalted Plains or in the Emerald Graves, and looks more greyish or even greenish in colder light like in the Hinterlands or on the Storm Coast; the very cold and contrast lightning in Emprise du Lion makes the hair look almost black there… And you may see different effects when using these mods with any ReShade or a mod changing the environmental lightning ( like « Northern Lights » ). If you do, please upload your screenshots to show other users what are your results.

    In-Game Compatibility & Known issues
These mods work with DLCs ( including « Trespasser » ).
And are compatible with any other mods, until they alter the following files:
 - mh_hf_cassandra_model_mesh.ebx
 - mh_hm_dorian_model_mesh.ebx
 - mb_hm_dorian_model_mesh.ebx
The only known ( so far ) issue coming to mind is that you once may find out the eyebrows and on-the-top-of-the-head hair colors are still mismatched in some areas of the world due to very specific lightning. Or if you're using any complexion mod(s), as I've been choosing the colors to be as close as possible to the Vanilla brows.
Feel free to report any technical problems in comments.

Thanks to the NEXUSMODS site developers for creating an excellent vital habitat for mods, and modders, and mods users.
Great thanks to BioWare for the creation of our beloved « Dragon Age » !
Thanks to the developers of The Frosty Tool Suite for making FROSTBITE games modding possible.
And very special thanks to Margerard for figuring out a way of changing major characters' hair colors and for sharing this knowledge with the community. Without the Margerard's mentioned above mod and the explanations that can be found in its description these mods of mine would not exist.
