"Most performers believe it comes from the supposed practice of money being collected in a bottle during the performance. 
This would prevent the collector, or bottler, from stealing any of their earnings. The bottle was then smashed to retrieve 
the contents. Supposed elaborations on this practice involved the bottler holding a live fly in his hand. If the fly were alive 
at the end of the performance, it would suggest the bottler had not opened his hand to pilfer the takings."
