Dragon Age 2

Kirkwall Expanded Quest Guide

This article contains walkthroughs of most of the original quests I added to the game.  It does not include any of the fetch quests or any of the "restored" content, as all of those quests should be straightforward, without anything extra or hidden.

Most of these quests are very small and simple, but may have something hidden you overlooked.  Spoilers may be included in these walkthroughs, so if you'd rather figure things out for yourself, don't read. :)

Quests

A Dozen Years of Solitude (Act 1)
Spoiler:
Show

Walkthrough:

Purchase the “Strange Amulet” for sale from Jocelyn’s Bits and Baubles in the Lowtown Bazaar. (Jocelyn and her store don’t appear until after you have visited Gamlen for the first time.) After you have purchased the amulet, equip it on Hawke and you will be transported to the Fade.

Once in the Fade, follow the quest markers to read the codex entries that have been placed throughout the house. The Strange Amulet will be converted to Rosalie’s Amulet and will not be unequippable for the duration of your time in the Fade. After the final codex entry has been read, you will gain access to a previously locked room and a quest marker will appear on a painting. Use the painting to exit the Fade.

After you have left the Fade, you must travel to Darktown and locate the Concealed Lockbox, which can only be opened while wearing Rosalie’s Amulet. You will then be given two choices: you can send the cache to the Templars or open the cache and access its contents.

If you send the cache to the Templars, the quest is effectively over. Return home to Gamlen’s house to receive a reward.

If you access the cache, ten Elixirs of Restoration will be added to your inventory. You only need one, but I added several just in case. These Elixirs work as consumable “grenade” items and can be added to your quickbar. Travel to Hightown and find the ravens lingering near Hightown Estates. One of these ravens will have a quest marker over it. Use the Elixir of Restoration on the raven to turn it back into Rosalie. Once you have done this, return home to Gamlen’s house to receive a reward. Rosalie’s Amulet will also receive a couple of additional stat bonuses.

Extras:
There are several additional minor rewards you can access by interacting with various objects while in the Fade. These are:

  • Painting: The Tutor. After reading Lady Clara’s second journal entry, click on the portrait labeled “The Tutor” at the top of the stairs to the left of the center door. You will be given an attribute point.
  • Four Chests: In a back room (far upper right corner on the minimap) you’ll find a room with four chests. Clicking on these chests will transform them into ravens. After you have clicked the fourth chest (order doesn’t matter) you will receive an attribute point.
  • Floating Book: In the room past the kitchen, you’ll find a floating book moving around the room (essentially a copy of the one in Night Terrors). Catching it will grant you an attribute point.
  • Three Fires: After reading the codex entry that comes along with “A Painful Memory” the three fires in the house will be extinguished. They are located in the kitchen, in main room at the top of the staircase, and in the dining room in the upper left of the minimap. Clicking the icon in front of these fires will reignite them. Reigniting all three will add a “+2% xp gain” to Rosalie’s Amulet.
  • Spirit of Faith: After reading the codex entry that goes along with “A Shattered Dream,” click on the bookshelf to the left labeled “A Closely Guarded Truth.” You will receive a codex entry about the Rite of Tranquility. (If you click on the exit door at the top of the room, you’ll automatically be transported to the painting “The Tranquil” – but this is not a necessary step; it was just to provide a hint.) Locate one of the two Spirits of Faith that are wandering about the mansion. (One is in the dining room; one is in located in a room adjacent to the painting of The Tranquil.) You need only one. Approaching the Spirit of Faith will cause a small sparkly effect to swirl around Hawke and make the Spirit of Faith follow you. Bring the Spirit of Faith to the painting of “The Tranquil” and click the painting. This will add “+20% healing to this character” to Rosalie’s Amulet and unlock an additional painting, “A Gift of Knowledge” in the exit room. Clicking it will grant you an ability point.

Additionally, there is a single chest in the exit room that will grant you an attribute point for clicking it. There are also three other codex entries that can be collected within the mansion: The Aeonar, The Black City, and Shapeshifters.

Great Expectations (Act 1)
(Bounty Board Sidequest – Requires Bounty Board)
Spoiler:
Show
This is a small quest that is only available under select circumstances. To access it, you need to have chosen to join with Athenril’s smugglers in the prologue, then during Loose Ends, you must give the goods to Pryce and allow him to start a new life.  If you have met these two qualifications, then after you donate to the little girl begging in Hightown near the Chantry three separate times, you will receive a letter at Gamlen’s initiating the quest.

To complete the quest, simply travel to the designated warehouse at the nighttime Docks. Clear out the enemies and speak to Clem. There are a couple of unique items to pick up in the warehouse, as well, so be sure to check the crates and chests.

This quest affects the potential Act 3 bounty “The Belafor Sisters,” which is why it requires the Bounty Board. Completing the quest will prevent Clem from being included in the bounty. Instead, if you receive and complete the Belafor Sisters bounty in Act 3, you will be able to see the adult Clem tending to the chickens in Adalind’s market stand in Lowtown.

Find the Queen of Antiva! (Act 1)
Spoiler:
Show
This quest is fairly straightforward. After completing “The Unbidden Rescue” and returning Saemus to the Keep, return home to receive a letter at Gamlen’s house initiating the quest.  Then go to Hightown and locate the first set of paw prints near the door of the Chantry, following the trail through Hightown, Lowtown, and the Docks until you locate the missing cat.

At this point you have two options: you can return the cat to Valerie in Hightown and receive a reward (return to Gamlen’s house for a letter with the true reward). Or… you can choose to keep the cat for yourself by not returning her at any point before the end of the act. There is no reward for doing this, but if you do, the cat will appear in the Hawke Estate in Acts 2 and 3. You cat thief.

Feathered Friendship (Act 1)
Spoiler:
Show
Not really a quest, but a small bonus you can do to befriend the ravens I added to Kirkwall. First, buy the item “A Visitation of Ravens”  from Genevier's shop in Lowtown Night. You will be given notification that you’ve received “insight” into ravens. For the remainder of the act, you’ll find small sparkling patches on the ground in areas where the ravens are located. Clicking them will “feed” the ravens. Do this several times in one area, or once in multiple areas, and the quest “Feathered Friendship” will automatically complete.

You won’t receive much of a reward now, but once you have access to the Hawke Estate, a small chest will spawn next to the Special Deliveries chest. This chest will randomly collect “gifts” (mostly junk) given to you by your new feathered friends. You will also be able to see ravens hanging out in the windows of the Hawke Estate.

Kindness Repaid (Acts 1 and 2)
Spoiler:
Show
Technically an Act 2 quest, but it must be triggered in Act 1. This is very easy to complete: simply donate to the dwarf woman begging in Darktown in Act 1 three separate times. You’ll know you’ve completed it by the change in her dialogue after you have donated enough times.

If you do this, you’ll receive a letter in Act 2 thanking you for your generosity, providing you with a crafting recipe, and automatically completing the quest. You will also receive a permanent discount to all of Eilspeth’s items and upgrades in Eilspeth’s Anvil (the upgrades shop).

Druffalo Hunt (Act 2)
Spoiler:
Show
Druffalo Hunt is only available if you have the Legacy DLC installed. This is because the druffalo is using the same skeleton as the bronto and will be lacking animations if you don’t have Legacy.

You can pick up the quest at the Chanter’s Board during Act 2. Once you’ve accepted it, simply follow the trail in Hightown by clicking on the quest markers. After you’ve clicked the final piece of the trail, a new location (“Run-Down Back Alley”) will be accessible in the Kirkwall – Day map. Travel to the location and defeat the enemies.

When confronting the druffalo, you will have two choices: either to kill it, or to subdue it with the “Herbal Infusion” items that were automatically added to your inventory when you accepted the quest. The Herbal Infusions are consumable items that operate as grenades; simply place them on your quickbar and toss one at the druffalo. The range is actually very wide, so as long as you toss the infusion remotely near it, you shouldn’t have any difficulty catching it.

Once you’ve killed or subdued the druffalo, return to Chanter Taletha for a reward.

Additionally, if you chose to subdue the druffalo, a new pet, “Miniature Druffalo” (actually miniature this time) will be available for purchase from Jocelyn in Lowtown.

A Story Told in Blood (Acts 1, 2, and 3)
Spoiler:
Show
The bulk of this quest takes place in Act 3, but in order to access it, you need to collect items in all three acts. There are three rings, Vahnel, Felestia, and Kerowen, that you need to obtain before the quest becomes active. Vahnel can be purchased from Cornelius in Elseworld Wares in Act 1. Felestia can be found by clicking on the “Scavenging Rat” that is running around Darktown in Act 2. Kerowen is located near the far exit of the Disused Passage in Act 3.

After you pick up Kerowen in Act 3, if you previously obtained the other two rings, the quest A Story Told in Blood will be added to your log.

Travel to Darktown and open the Hidden Cache to receive the “Small Glass Phylactery.” This is a consumable item that operates as a grenade. It’s restricted to blood mages, so if Hawke isn’t one, you’ll need Merrill to use it. Take the Small Glass Phylactery somewhere outside of Kirkwall (such as Sundermount or the Wounded Coast) and use it to spawn a revenant. After the revenant is defeated, loot its body to receive a codex entry.

Reading the codex entry will lead to three locations of broken seals, one in Lowtown, one in the Docks, and one in the Gallows. They aren’t marked on the main Kirkwall map, but you’ll see their quest markers in the minimaps of those locations. The Lowtown and Docks areas can be accessed during day or night.

Travel to each location and click the “Faint Lettering” and you will be prompted to release. (A Hawke with access to blood magic will be given an alternate choice of binding the demons.) If you choose to release the demons, you will be forced to fight them:

  • “The Magister’s Want” is a desire demon located in Lowtown
  • “The Magister’s Wrath” is a rage demon located in the Docks
  • “The Magister’s Will” is a pride demon located in the Gallows

Depending on your difficulty setting, these fights may get a bit tricky. After you have either released or bound the final demon, the quest will complete and you’ll receive a reward.

Bounties

Most of the bounties are fairly straightforward, but there are a few that have additional elements to them. These are:

Bounty: Aston the Pitiless (Act 2)
Spoiler:
Show
This bounty requires you meet a couple of conditions before you can complete it. As the quest indicates, first, you need to be completely alone. That means you cannot have any followers, any mercenaries, any pets, or Dog. Because of this, I highly recommend clearing out that area of Hightown before you attempt it. Second, you’ll need to be wearing the “Initiate’s Robes” that are located in a chest near the Chantry.

Once you have met these conditions, if you approach Aston (he will be disguised as a beggar near the bottom of the Chantry steps) he will become hostile and attack. At this point, you can feel free to summon Dog, pets, or mercenaries to help you with the fight.

Bounty: ??? (Act 3)
Spoiler:
Show
This bounty is probably the trickiest one, as you have to trigger the attack by searching specific through Darktown. There are four specific trigger areas:

  • One is near the staircase you go up when leaving Anders's clinic
  • Two are located in the area where you fought Danzig in Act 1; walk near the edges by the tents/bedrolls/camp areas
  • The fourth is in the raised area near the center of the map, flanked by two staircases.  Check the dark corner to the upper left, near the pillar.

Additional note: If you receive the bounty, travel to Darktown, and leave without completing it, the killer will start picking off some of the NPCs that normally live there. Each time you enter and leave Darktown without completing the bounty, another NPC (up to a total of four possible) will be removed.

Bounty: "Cleft-Foot" Cadlow (Act 3)
Spoiler:
Show
This bounty is straightforward except for one detail: there are two possible outcomes for it. As the bounty notice indicates, this quest is urgent. That means if you travel to any map location other than Lowtown Night after receiving it, the client will be killed before you can complete it. If you travel to Lowtown Night immediately after picking up the bounty, you will arrive in time to save him. You will receive a slightly different reward for the quest depending on which route you choose.

    Anshela,

    Regarding "Druffalo Hunt (Act 2)"

Just a note, this quest activated for me in Act 1 and all respective portions listed in the guide happened in Act 1. The mini Druffalo I did see in the merchant's inventory in Act 2, though I wasn't really looking for it while still in Act 1.

      O_O

That's very strange.  I'll have to check what caused that.  I wouldn't have thought that would even be possible!

A question about the Bounty quests: are they random? As you may remember I started a new playthrough so that I could use your version 1.602 all the way through, but this time I got a "Diamond Jack" rather than "The Whittler" (Act 1). I also got 2 I can't remember in the previous playthrough; among those a sister in Hightown at night.

Yep!  You can read a full explanation on how the bounties work under the tab "The Bounty Board" in the mod's description.

Yes, I can. And I only checked the contents of the Quest Guide, naturally. ;-)
    Thanks again!
