Win a Switch Lite or a $50 gift card with We The Players

  • Comment
We've partnered up with WeThePlayers.com - a new gaming site created by former Nexus Mods staff-er BlindJudge - to offer you the chance to win one of 6x Nintendo Switch consoles or 30x $50 Steam gift cards by creating an account and reviewing a game! Full details from the man himself below...

It has been a while since I've posted on Nexus Mods and I feel privileged to be invited back to tell you about a project of mine. Those who have scrolled these pages pre-2017 may remember me as the previous Director Of Content at Nexus Mods (BlindJudge). A few highlights of mine were; heading up the redesign of the website, interviewing Mod Authors for the Sunday Discussion and hosting a few AMA's with people like Elianora and the owner of Nexus Mods, Robin Scott.

Since then, I have been busy working to create a new grassroots community-based video game hub and have kept in regular contact with the Nexus Mods team for feedback. The site has been in development for the last two years and I'm pleased to (finally!) say that it is ready for people to try out. Robin has been supporting me and my venture from the start as a Director in an advisory role, having built Nexus Mods up from nothing to what it is today he knows how to build a community, I am grateful that I can always rely on his advice (and sarcasm).

Our site is 'We The Players' and provides gamers with a platform where they can search, rate and review titles that they have played -be it the latest AAA release or a game from the 1980s. Players can create collections of games for any reason they can think of and upload screenshots and videos of their gameplay. We want to be the site that gamers visit to find their next game, read reviews from the gaming community or to showcase their gaming lives through collections and media.

It's only the very beginning for us, with this release being our BETA. We are adding new features to the site regularly. We want to hear from you, the people that love gaming, and so we are open to feedback and ideas on what to develop in the future.

We would love for you all to be a part of our journey, and so would like to extend an invitation to sign up and become a founding member of the site.

As an incentive, each month for the next six months, we’re going to be giving away a Nintendo Switch Lite for our favourite review, and an additional 5 x $50 Steam Vouchers to a review by Nexus Mods user (selected at random).

To put your name in the hat for these prizes, you need to add a link to your Nexus Mods account in the services section of your We The Players profile.

Then, for a chance to win one of the Steam Vouchers you simply need to submit at least one review on We The Players. That is you entered from that point onwards.  Each month we will be taking a read of all the reviews and collections that are created and will be giving away a Nintendo Switch Lite to one that catches our eye. We'll be judging the entries based on total kudos, view count, style and formatting as well as the content itself. A good review doesn't have to be positive, but it does need to be constructive and have substance. Here's an example of a really good review and a great collection to give you an idea of what we're hoping for.

We’ll be contacting the winners each month via private message on Nexus Mods with details of how to claim their prize.

The Community Managers Pickysaurus and BigBizkit already have their profiles set-up, so feel free to go and take a look at them:

https://wetheplayers.com/user/pickysaurus
https://wetheplayers.com/user/big-bizkit

My profile is TokenGeek, click here if you want to take a peek.

As you can imagine, we have two main hurdles at the moment that you could help us with.

  1. Getting community content - Whether this is simply rating games that you have played, past and present, or writing reviews and creating collections.
  2. Awareness of the website: Spreading the word to gaming friends, and sharing your content on social media and Reddit.com would really help us out in this regard.

You can find us on Facebook and Twitter where we post updates, giveaways and showcase users of the site. We also have a new Discord, where we discuss gaming in general and host giveaways.

So what have we got in the works going forwards? Well, we’re working hard on sorting out our API for external use, creating pages for all the Developers and Publishers so that all the games they have released are easily accessible, and adding achievements and leaderboards into the site. We’re also looking at the various API’s for game platforms so that your game library can be imported into the site for you, making it easy to rate and review titles you own and create interesting collections.

These last two years have been quite the slog, but we truly hope you like the site. Big thanks to Robin and the Nexus Mods team for all their hard work and help on WeThePlayers.com, and thank you for reading this post. We look forward to welcoming you onto the site.

How to Enter

As a quick recap, to enter the event you need to do the following:

  1. Create a free account at WeThePlayers.com
  2. Hover over your avatar in the top right and select "Edit Profile".
  3. Click on the "Services" tab.
  4. Scroll down to the "Nexus Mods Profile" option and paste the full link to your profile (e.g. https://www.nexusmods.com/users/31179975)
  5. Don't forget to click "Save"!

Once that's done, each time you leave a review for a game you'll be entered into the prize draw. You can tell the world how much you love to mod Skyrim, how Stardew Valley changed your life or how Blade & Sorcery is the best VR game ever.

You guys checking for plagiarism in the reviews? I feel many might exploit the giveaway by simply copy-pasting other reviews from other platforms.

It's a fair concern. For the moment, we have reporting functionality for users to flag content for moderation. This flags it to TheTokenGeek and myself to review.

Over time if we need to more actively police this we will.

For this specific giveaway, we will be reading all the reviews ourselves and using our best judgement and will try to check for plagiarism as part of this process.

So how are the winners being selected? Like, is it just a random drawing of individuals connected to the Nexus site and one gets pulled from a pool, or is it you guys pick a review that you think is best (regardless of whether it's for or against the game) and go from there? I really like the concept btw!

We'll do a random drawing of anyone with their Nexus profile linked in their services section, and written reviews on the We The Players website for the Steam vouchers.
The Switch will be given to the review that has caught our eye that month (I am already shortlisting my choices of reviews as I read through them). We don't have to agree with the review, but instead just like the writing of it...

Oh good, that seems like the best way to do it in my opinion. I'll be setting up an account today and I've got some (hopefully) good reviews to share. Thanks for answering my question, I wish you and your group the best of luck in this endeavor, and I hope you have a wonderful day while staying safe :)

    Hi, TheTokenGeek,

I published a review tonight and it is not showing up on my profile or in the game's reviews section. It's also labeled "Personal" rather than "Reviewer", but I'm not sure what that difference is on the WeThePlayers platform.

My username is LicensedToThrill, if that helps.

Is the review for Watch Dogs?
I can see this on your profile and also on the game page? Have you done another one, I’ve just mentioned it to the dev team to take a look at.

Yes indeed :) Watch Dogs 2. I wonder if it's something to do with Chrome's cookies. I use the Privacy Badger extension, so I'll try messing with that quick and report back.

Edit: It seems to be working as normal, thank you! :)

Winners will be notified via DM and hopefully a quick news post with their usernames. The Switch will also be on the news post with a link to the winning review.

In other words, we're given a chance to win something to help that site become like Metacritic + Player.me hybrid but better, right?

Well, to become better than Metacritic, it's necessary to eliminate reviewers score. Only score from usual players should matter.

And regarding Player.me likeness... well, there are no point in sticking with this site at a moment since Player.me does it all better.

    But thanks for the effort.

    P. S.

    >Review bombing will have to be closely monitored by us. We obviously don't want a games review bombed as that would not only hurt us, but our peers - the real gamers/players that are using the site as it's meant to be used.

'You are encouraged to have an opinion but you are not encouraged to have an opinion', sheesh.
Particular game's reputation is inseparable from its developer+publisher reputation, vice versa.
    Let's take Wolcen, as example.
We were promised that we'll get GOG.com version. We bought it. We got screwed since GOG.com version became discontinued.
It's developers' FUBAR but it can and should be reflected in game's rating, IMHO.
The mentioning of 'review bombing' concept is... it just doesn't feel right.

      Hi Mrrrori,

Thanks for taking the time to write that, it's important we hear opinions from everywhere and, as previously stated, we understand that the website won't be for everyone. In terms of the comparison to Metacritic, you've hit the nail on the head in regards to only being for players ratings, we don't aggregate or include ratings from large 'corporate' sites such as the GameSpot and IGN's.

I agree that Player.me is a great site, I was part of the first group of users, but it focuses more on the creative side/streaming than anything else. It doesn't really help with game discovery and that part kind of fades into the background.

Also, the review bombing aspect is something that is a problem throughout the industry, like you say, it's when people are disgruntled at the developers/publishers. We haven't made our minds up on how to deal with review bombing, but I'd be really interested to hear what you would suggest, so please feel free to DM me either on Nexus or over on our Discord. We are building the community with the help of the community, so any ideas we get are talked about in internal meetings.

Again, thank you for posting your thoughts. Any constructive criticism is appreciated.

      Kind regards,

      Paul

WeThePlayers seems is a cool website, will definitely start being more active on there.

I have questions about this contest though, is it open globally?

I published 4 new reviews today, but they are not showing up under my Published or ratings tab in my wetheplayers profile.

    Is this a glitch?

When I looked under one of the games - Hearthstone, I was able to find my review.

What is your username on the site and I’ll go and take a look for you.

edit: found you. You’re ArcSurvivor aren’t you?

I can see your 4 reviews in your profile page, but not in your reviews section on your profile. I’ll get it looked at first thing in the morning. :D

      Correct, username is ArcSurvivor.

      I have one more question.

Is there a maximum amount of reviews one person can publish each month? Lets say a person has 50 reviews and all were posted within 1 week.

    1. Do we need a minimum Member Title on Nexusmods or a certain amount of posts to qualify for the giveaway?

    2. Also, can we use reviews we have already written/uploaded on our Steam account? Or do they need to be "new" game reviews?

No minimum member title at all, just one genuine review (long or short) on the site. Though every proper review will count as an entry for the steam gift card and give you another chance for the Nintendo Switch.

We'd absolutely love for you to transfer your Steam reviews across, as long as you have written the content, then it counts.

Looking forward to welcoming you onto the site. :)

So how will things like review bombs be handled ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but review bombs mainly happen as Players are unhappy with how the company, in particular, is handling something. Be it the announcement of the Diablo mobile game, or something being released that in no way meets up to the standard that was initially promised.
In the near future, we are planning on having developer and publisher pages. A place where the players can say if they are in or out of favour... This will be tracked and you can change your mind on a company at any time. So, Hello Games releases No Mans Sky, a game so far from an expectation, that people felt cheated - you vote them out of favour, then they continue to work on it consistently over a period of time and the game comes together in an incredible way, you change your opinion and vote them back in favour - this will be tracked like a heartbeat.

Review bombing will have to be closely monitored by us. We obviously don't want a games review bombed as that would not only hurt us, but our peers - the real gamers/players that are using the site as it's meant to be used.

If you have any suggestions on things you would like to see on the site, or other ways to handle review bombing, jump on our Discord and either message me direct or post it in the #suggestions channel. We listen to every single one.
