THE TRANSCENDENT ONE

VOICESET FOR DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS

VERSION 1.1

DESCRIPTION:

*** Planescape: Torment spoilers ahead ***

Mortality torn from an ancient sorcerer by a twisted Night Hag and given hideous form, the TRANSCENDENT ONE has once ruled the Fortress of Regrets on the Negative Energy Plane and commanded legions of shadows. Immortal and immensely powerful, he was one step from achieving invulnerability by destroying all evidence of his origin. However, after a thousand lifetimes, an incarnation of his other fractured half, the Nameless One, managed to find the Fortress and restore his Self by defeating and absorbing the TRANSCENDENT ONE.

Mortal once again, the Nameless One had been plunged into the depths of the Abyss, presumably to serve penance for the many crimes of his incarnations. Yet, with the knowledge and powers acquired by the reunification, he cut a bloody swath through demons and devils alike, wandering through the abyssal layers in the endless search of a way back to the Prime Material, until finally wrestling such a secret from a balor imprisoned on the topmost layer, Panuzia. However, the ritual proved to be a trap, hurling the Nameless One into an unknown land where laws of Magic itself were twisted almost out of recognition.

It was here that the TRANSCENDENT ONE resurfaced as a functional part of consciousness, regaining his own skills and memories, though under control of the Nameless One's ego. He views Ferelden as just another demi-plane in the endless chain of Blood War battlegrounds, and the darkspawn invasion as a tanar'ri plot to overtake this realm. Wise and cruel, he is eager to continue spreading pain and suffering in a quest to obtain ultimate power and, perhaps, cheat Death once again.

*** End spoilers ***

GENERAL:

This mod contains a custom voice set that uses sound files from "Planescape: Torment" character The Transcendent One. This voice set will replace the Male Human Violent voice set in your game. If your character is not using the Male Human Violent voice set, you can either start a new game and select this voice set, or edit your save game in the toolset. This voice is best suited for an evil mage, although also works for warriors and rogues with evil inclinations. I like this voice because it represents hard core, old school intelligent villainy with a methodically vicious and profound approach to evil, not the modern half-baked "teenagers on acid" type of villainy.

FREQUENCY TWEAK

The mod also increases the frequency of vocal comments from the player character and the party members. This was done, first, in order to allow the user to quickly get a feel of the new voice set, and second, to revive the traditions of Infinity Engine games, when party members responded every time you clicked their portrait and ordered them to do something, instead of a 20%-30% chance originally in DA:O. Beware, this will make your game a lot noisier 8-) If you don't like it, you can uninstall the *.GDA files or tweak the relevant 2DA files yourself.

Files involved:
*.GDA files in this archive.

INSTALLATION:

Unrar the files into your Override folder (located in My Documents/[your account]/BioWare/Dragon Age/packages/core).

UNINSTALLATION:

Remove the files from the Override folder.

UPDATES IN 1.1

1. Soundset now selectable during character creation (shows up as "Abomination")
2. More sounds added
3. Increased frequency of responses in game for all party members
4. Performance tweaks
4.1 Enabled 7.1 channel speakers (previously the game enforced 5.1)
4.2 Enabled improved sound processing

KNOWN ISSUES:

a) Some sounds are still not replaced. However, there should be no occasion for them to be used in game.

b) The player character will not respond when his portrait is clicked. This is not a problem of the mod, it's the way the core soundset script works. Presumably the designers didn't like their own soundsets, and didn't want the players to hear them. Currently working with resolving this issue.

FUTURE WORK:

Improving this voice set, making new ones.

FEEDBACK:

This is only the first version, and the first ever fully custom soundset. Please report any problems you encounter, so that we can improve this soundset and make better ones in the future.
