About this mod

A new head for Sten with new hair and tints, along with other edits to tmp7704's Qunari update

Changelogs
Update: eye weighting has been improved on both heads.

This is a new head framework for Sten, for users of tmp7704's Qunari Update.

Sten canonically isn't supposed to have horns. So this is a new unique head mesh for him that doesn't have any, consistent with his later bronze appearance in comics.
It comes with custom textures by Ashhawk and a new head and hair by Commanderstrawberry, as well as unique tints.

This mod works very similarly to and is inspired by Sten of the Beresaad (a great mod, check it out & give it an endorsement- there is an optional file available so you can use these textures with that head instead if you like).

This mod comes with a default morph, but there's also alternate morphs for him available.
It's possible the eyeball/hair/beard combination you want doesn't have a morph, it may be quicker to edit it yourself. Check this tutorial and this image for how to do that.

Face
Sten new head mesh, maos and textures.

Hair
  • Sten's default cornrows ponytail hair
  • Cornrows ponytail with earrings
  • Long Cornrows
  • Long Cornrows with earrings
  • Arishok hair- hair with earrings similar to appearance in Those Who Speak comic
  • Sideburns only- the tala sideburns without the beard, for other qunari morphs
Beards
  • Arishok beard- beard inspired by Those Who Speak comic
  • Earring - silver and gold earrings separately in beard slot, for functionality similar to Shanamah's Earring Beards mod
  • Kadan Necklace- goes in beard slot. This is the dragon tooth necklace you give to Iron Bull when you romance him. It will clip through mostly anything that isn't shirtless. This is there in case you had a headcanon about him and your Warden (we know you people exist)

Eyeballs

Bugfix for MMH - This is a bug fix that gives the Qunari eyeball the correct mao. By default they use the darkspawn one, this gives them the correct default one. This will not change the look of any of the npc qunari, their whole eye textures should just sit over the top of it as normal.

Eyeball mesh options

A number of different eyeball meshes. These have been modified so the unique dark sclera of the DA2 qunari can be kept, but also tinted any colour.
These should work with most of your eyeball retexture mods, assuming they keep the same or similarly placed tint maps and normal maps.

  • Dark Sclera default- the default sclera texture of the DA2 Qunari
  • Dark Sclera variant - a variant made from Salit's unique eye texture from the DA2 DLC
  • Darkest Sclera- Very dark sclera
  • White Sclera- Hopefully shouldn't be needed- This is in case the MMH fix does not work. Points to the default mao and textures.

Eye textures
Some new eye textures for morphs.

Tints
The 3 custom tints used on this Sten. If you want to replace a tint with another, such as one from sapphim's Qunari Skintones , take the one from the other mod, rename it and drop it in to replace it.
Other folder
Contains a few extra tints.

Shirtless retexture
2k retexture of the 'nude' shirtless qunari update body, plus retexture of the qunpaint clothing item. These textures will also show up on the items from Kossith Add On.

Compatibility Head Spec Alteration
Alters the other head speculars to be consistent with the body and spec alterations.

Body Mesh Edits

L3
The missing LOD 3 for 'naked' qunari update, so Sten will no longer become fleshy when you get too far away from him in camp or the Lothering cage.

Armour edits
Edit to the heavy, medium and light armour chestpiece meshes to make the collars lower, so Sten's chin clips into it less in cutscenes.

Optional files

Alternate face textures
Alternate looks for Sten with 'Vitaar' (confers no gameplay effect, just for appearances)
These will work with any morph. Just drag and drop them in to replace the original textures.
The first one was designed by eudodo, but most of these are inspired by Origins concept art of Sten.

01 eudodo's Red vitaar design
02 Red markings over eyes
03 Black line
03 -02 - Black line and red markings
04 Gold line
05 White line

Alt head mesh
Alternate head mesh for Sten with pointier teeth/fangs, taken from the DA2 Arishok's head mesh.

4k shirtless retexure
Alternate 4096x4096 files

Potential conflicts:

Any other head morphs for Sten (qm_genfl_sten.mor) or any other qm_uhm_basb_0 mesh file will conflict.
Total list of conflicts:
Spoiler:
Show
Any other morphs for Sten (run a search for qm_genfl_sten.mor)
Lots of character overhaul mods and texture mods will have one hidden. For example, Ellise's unique companion textures.

Anything else that changes these files needs to be deleted:
qm_har_stna
qm_uhm_basb_0
qm_uhm_basa_0
Face mesh mods such as Realistic Teeth will need to have the Qunari sections (qm_ files) removed.

Also incompatible with:

Things that replace the QM nude mesh
Custom armor mods designed for the default qunari body.
Things that replace the default qunari armour models, such as the qm_ files in Symmetrical Massive Armour

They will not crash, but they will also not fit the proportions of the new body and there will be gaps between head and neck.

Some eye mods will include their own fix for qm_uem_basa_0.mmh.
This is fine as the mods do the same thing, but if it comes with a qm_uem_bas_0.msh file, delete that.

Sometimes modders extract every file in Qunari Update and put it in their override so it can be seen in the toolset when they make morphs- those files need to only be in your Addins Folder when you play the game. At least delete the basb head mesh files.

Some mods have everything packed away in ERFs, so just because you search and nothing shows up doesn't mean there's no conflicting file there.
This tool will help for everything not in an ERF

working dazip version of tmp7704's mod
tmp7704's original qunari update upload & README

If you're mixing and matching armour types on a qunari (light gloves with medium chestplate on Sten for example) there may be some gaps on the models.

How to Install
Ensure you have tmp7704's Qunari Update addin installed.
These textures and meshes are higher quality than the ones in the base game (2k) so make sure your game has the 4GB large awareness patch as well.

Unzip and place folder into your My Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age\packages\core\override folder.

If you want one of the alternate morphs, replace the one that came with the base package with it.
To use an alternate face texture, download it from Optional files, and drag and drop the texture files in to replace the ones in the main files.

To uninstall just delete. Should be safe to install if deleted entirely- your game will fall back on using what's in the Addins folder, which will be tmp7704's original qunari update morph for him.

Recommended mods to get full use out of Sten

Gameplay
Two Specializations Sten - gives Sten two specialisation points like the other companions
Or Reaver Sten - starts Sten with the reaver specialisation.
Dain's Fixes- balanced tweaks. Makes Sten's sword Asala out of silverite, and contains a Qunari race restat so they have starting attributes. Alternately, TSM Better Qunari also restats the Qunari race.

Visuals
No Helmet Hack - he looks a lot better without a helmet on.
Kossith Add -On - outfit and weapons which will work with Qunari Update. Plus alternate UTCs
Sten No Clothes - removes his common clothing when he is first met in Lothering.
Cord of the Beresaad (nexus) (tumblr) - unique starting item for Sten

Other
Improved Atmosphere has a file called party-barks.dlg which forces every character in the party to comment instead of the game picking one person. This should help prompt otherwise possibly missed conversations you can have with Sten(or other characters). You can only install that file and ignore the rest of the mod, if you like.

Base Game
The Feastday Gifts and Pranks module has the Qunari Book of Prayer available to purchase from Bodahn, which allows Sten to revive dead players in battle.
