5. Run any remaining large textures (20MB or higher) through Ordenador. Set anything above 2048x2048 to be downscaled (divide width and height by half).
6. If you want to be extra certain, you can repeat the process for the normal and specular maps (files ending in "n.dds" and "s.dds") and further downscale anything above 1024x1024.
I've struggled with these HD texture packs since I first downloaded them late last year, and had multiple spots where I frequently couldn't progress with the game without taking the textures out of my override completely, like trying to leave the Lothering Chantry or the Redcliffe Castle upper floor. Trying to leave the Amaranthine Chantry was flat out impossible. After this process, all those area transitions now work.
The game will still crash eventually if I play it long enough, or if I try to run back and forth through those areas multiple times, and I have to first load into a save at party camp before being able to load a save in problem areas like Denerim or Lothering. But at no point have I run into anything that forces me to remove mods in order to progress - and this is with a ton of other, often graphics-intensive, mods installed.
A thing you might try that further improved stability for me is downscaling the civilian clothing files (*cth*.dds) to 1024x1024. Or just deleting them. A lot of the city crashing seems to be caused by a bunch of those being loaded at once. Another is the weapon textures (generally w_*.dds), which usually are the least noticeable anyway.
This is awesome. Probably would be better than an official remaster. My only complaints are sometimes the mod will cause my game to crash when resuming/loading a game but can be fixed by moving the mod's folder away from the override folder, load into a game and move your party to somewhere else like your camp then exit the game and put the folder back in. Another complaint is some of the textures seem to be "vibrating" not sure what the appropriate word to use here but I think you get what I mean. Overall really good though, wish there's something like this for DA2.
If you haven't done so already you need to change your .EXE file to be set for LAA Its alot easier than it sounds. Should only take a few minutes to do.But basically the game runs a 2GB of RAM. Have the file set to LAA allows the game to run at 4gb of RAM which is needed for this mod
It is explained here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=233222451 you can either download the prepatched file or do it yourself as stated in the guide.I just copied pasted the application and replaced the old one in the bin folder
It's been more than a year, but maybe it could help someone in the future. Whenever this happens, just put the quality down a bit, make the character, then put them on high again.
JB3Textures should be unironically removed from nexus because they are absolutely terrible and people still download them because they're popular and high on the toplist.
JB3 textures look terrible, this mod is vastly superior to those textures, unfortunately I also have weird issues with it like the mage hands being black.
Before knowing about this mod and even while using other tons of texture mods, I never realize how much of an effect baked-in shadows can have on lighting and ambiance without actually messing with the engine, adding in-game light sources, or using Reshade, I could barely recognize DAO with this installed. This is certainly a very impressive project, and definitely a welcomed one after playing this game for nearly 12-13 years.
Update. And this is why I carefully install my mods and categorize them in files inside the override. I reached Lothering for the first time, enter the Chantry did some stuff, and when I went to exit my game crashed. Then, I tried an earlier save, and it didn't even boot and CTD. I took my textures folder out of the override and started the same save that crashed when exiting the Chantry, and I transition the areas normally and without problems. Srsly though, this game has some serious issues with high-res textures and memory leaks.
Had the same Problem.. It will happen when leaving the tavern also. You need to turn your video setting down to medium and other setting down for video. like aa. i cut that to 4 and had no problems afterwards. :)

I've finally been able to make (most of) this pack work consistently without game-breaking crashes by doing the following:
1. Install Large Address Aware, if you haven't already. You really should have it regardless.
2. Install this mod
3. Install Old Gods in the same directory, overwriting duplicate files.
4. Install Manually Optimized Textures, overwriting duplicate files (or just let it load later).
5. Run any remaining large textures (20MB or higher) through Ordenador. Set anything above 2048x2048 to be downscaled (divide width and
height by half).
6. If you want to be extra certain, you can repeat the process for the normal and specular maps (files ending in "n.dds" and "s.dds") and further downscale anything above 1024x1024.

With this way, it works already *___*
edit: game crashes the whole time, even after the LAA 4GB patch...
