*******Note: Something terribly odd went wrong during Act 3. Due to some weird override issues with mods and what not, Merrill ended up being a floating disembodied head. Nothing I did fixed it, so I used runscript appearance and gave her a body.**********
We climb Sundermount, making our way to Pride's End. Intrepidation clogs my throat, making it hard to breathe past the steel lump which lodges itself there. My mind still reels from what she had asked me. How could I strike her down, the woman I'd come to love… the one who'd stayed my by side for the past four years. How could she ask that of me? My head knows it was the right thing to do, but my heart breaks into little pieces each time I think of it.
I couldn't persuade her. She's as stubborn as I am. So I follow along behind her faithfully. Quietly I listen to Anders chastising her, to Isabela comforting her. My heart cries out to defend her, but my head knows Anders speaks the truth. I see the look she shoots at Anders and the look she levels upon me. I look away, bowing my head in shame. She knows how I feel about this. The divide between us grows larger. It's all so wrong. I cannot kill her and it tears me up inside to think of the consequences. Some champion I am.
But it doesn't come to that. Once inside the cave, we learn the heartbreaking truth. Marethari sacrifices herself to in order to save Merrill. My heart is disquiet. A brave yet damning act, I feel relief that I won't lose her, but realization dawns on me. She was never really mine. She never would have chosen me if it hadn't been for her misguided need to preserve something better left to the ages.
Yet I am the one who is there to pick up the pieces when it all comes crashing down.

Thanks to everyone for the endorsement and for following Elias's tragic relationship with Merrill... there is one more posted, maybe two more after that to come from these two.. to end their story. The bobbing head Merrill was kind of a distraction so initially I didn't incluse her in my group for the Gallows battle.
Interesting story. I like your use of present tense. But poor, misguided Merrill...
About the no body thing... I've had that happen too, only it was with the heads of several companions. I couldn't fix it on my own or find a solution on the Internets, so I ended up reinstalling the game. Thankfully, that fixed the problem. I've had to reinstall the game 3 times now because it somehow gets corrupted. Just remember to move your Characters, Settings, Override, Screenshots, etc. folders out of harm's way before uninstalling. I hope it helps you too!
