And you're doing about as well as you can in DAO - at least as far as I know. Just walk up to a wall or tree or piece of furniture to force the camera closer. Trial and error to find a place with decent lighting. I often leave my companions behind out of view, by pressing the 'hold' button (just under the column of portraits) a distance away from where I'm taking the shot.
