Dragon Age: Origins

For anyone who wants to know exactly what this overhaul entails before installing it, this article is a (kind of) detailed list of dialogue changes made by this mod, sorted by quest/character. For conflicts and compatibility, please see the mod page.

This is the only place I will continue to update with changes because the list is long. It's also a way to keep track of what I've done.

Please note that the images section only shows examples of changes made and doesn't show every line added or every change made. This article will contain spoilers if you've never played DAO or the Dalish Origin.

Dalish Elf Origin

Tamlen

**Tamlen's romance choice has been moved**
The choice to begin a romance with him is now part of the conversation after you handle the hunters and before you go to the cave. You must choose the one marked (love) or you won't trigger his romance and all the following choices that go with it.

  • removes gender check so that any player can choose to romance Tamlen
  • fixes the well-known error in Tamlen calling Mahariel by the wrong term of endearment based on a gender check - lethallin vs lethallan
  • moves flag to set their relationship as "love" to an added line in the conversation in the forest clearing (the answer is marked)
  • edits responses showing Mahariel knows elven history and terms
  • adds more sassy responses to their conversation with Tamlen
  • adds more affection to some of the responses to give Mahariel a chance to sweet talk a bit
  • attempts to remove some of the boring repetition in the conversation

Ashalle

  • adds more elven phrases/greetings to show Mahariel knows some common elven language
  • removes the persuasion check for asking about your parents (always thought that was stupid)
  • edits/adds more emotional responses for questions about Tamlen and parents

Fenarel

  • gives Mahariel more emotional lines when asking about Tamlen after you wake up
  • tweaks conversation about him tagging along on your trip back to the cave
  • adds some elven phrases/terms of endearment to Mahariel's dialogue
  • added some responses to give Mahariel the option to express care over their friendship with Fenarel

Merrill

  • a couple of "mage only" lines added for anyone who uses a mod to unlock the mage class for Dalish Elf origin
  • adds and extends dialogue options and responses for multiple conversations/topics
  • a response (in the cave ruins) added specifically for Mahariel in a "love" relationship with Tamlen
  • gives Mahariel some sassy/snappy/emotional responses
  • adds more elven phrases/greetings/terms of endearment to Mahariel's dialogue options
  • fixed a noticeable bug where if you got permission from the Keeper to take Fenarel along to the cave before speaking to Merrill, she would still argue about taking Fenarel - it was like the game assumed you would talk to Merrill first - now she'll only speak up if you didn't talk to the Keeper and get permission

Paivel

  • a "mage only" line was added for anyone who uses a mod to unlock the mage class for Dalish Elf origin
  • adds some elven phrases/greetings
  • extends scolding conversation for the cave excursion so you can talk back or repent more
  • edits/adds more emotional responses

Junar & Pol

  • minor edits, adding elven greetings and farewell
  • added a more empathetic response to the discussion of why Pol left Denerim

Maren

  • added elven greeting
  • edited vanilla lines with "more elfy" responses and phrases
  • added an affectionate response about Tamlen if Mahariel is in love with him

Master Ilen

  • edited some vanilla lines with elven phrases
  • added more affectionate and emotional responses in the conversation about not finding Tamlen (if you speak to him after Mahariel returns to camp with or without Duncan)
  • kept his conversation respectful and in line with the original tone of the vanilla dialogue

Ostagar (WIP)

King Cailan

  • adds elven greetings - respectful and disrespectful
  • two additional responses - respectful thanks and demonstration of faith in response to the Blight

Wynne
*this does not affect or alter her main follower dialogue - they are separate files*

  • edited vanilla greetings to include a response with a traditional elven greeting or allow the Warden to answer her initial question
  • added various responses with more appropriate Dalish language or ones that reflect Mahariel's heritage/background
  • completely revamped the responses you can give if you listen to her tell the story of where darkspawn came from
  • added additional responses to the darkspawn origin story if you spoke to the cleric blessing the soldiers (where Jory is) and refused the blessing when offered
  • choice of comments with elven religious overtones in regards to the battle ("may Mythal grant us protection," etc)

Tranquil Mage (guarding the chest)

  • edited vanilla lines or added additional ones using elven language and phrases
  • added a line for a non-Circle mage response in regards to the explanation of how mages are made tranquil
  • changed the intelligence check on a line from "high" to "medium" - my reason: high intelligence checks don't make sense at this point in the game - too early (and when I checked for compatibility, I found that Qwinn's Fixpack apparently also makes that change, no patch needed)
  • compatibility - the Tranquil mage should not refer to you as a Circle mage if you use and play with the Dalish Mage - Origin mod

Lothering

Elven Couple (Robbed) - Doomsayer - Frightened Refugees

  • vanilla lines were edited or added to with elven language, blessings, and/or mentions of the elven pantheon/religion

Miriam

  • edited dialogue lines and overall conversation to sound more authentic and flow better
  • changed some initial greetings that ended the conversation abruptly before you
could offer assistance - fixed so that you don't have to start a new conversation with her to do so
  • added in elven greeting and language where appropriate

Ser Donall

  • fixed a known bug where Alistair wouldn't introduce you to Ser Donall even if he was with you during the initial meeting
  • added elven greeting and language to some responses
  • minor edits to alter or add a few lines to be more appropriate for a Dalish Warden

Chantry Priest

  • minor edits to change or add responses about the Chant to be more appropriate for a Dalish Warden or a non-Andrastian

Loghain's Commander in Dane's Refuge (inn)

  • for both combative and non-combative answers- responses altered or added to include elven language and/or threats
  • when asking Leliana to bless them before they die (because the Warden
decides not to let the soldiers go) - the response was edited to be more
appropriate for a Dalish Warden (non-Andrastian)

Broken Circle (WIP)

Carroll (the Templar on the dock)

  • added a couple of lines to match Carroll's ridiculous banter
  • edited elven language/phrases to some vanilla responses

First Enchanter Irving

As a non-Andrastian, part of the conversation is slightly awkward for a Dalish Warden, whether or not you're a mage. Hopefully, the flow of the conversation has improved.

  • added more appropriate responses for a non-Andrastian Dalish elf to Irving's comment, "as though the Maker Himself sent you"
  • edited vanilla lines or added new responses with elven language/phrases
  • compatibility - Irving should not refer to you as a Circle mage if you use and play with the Dalish Mage - Origin mod

Templar/Desire Demon scene

  • extensive edits to vanilla lines across multiple conversation choices
  • edited initial reaction so that you can swear "by the Creators" or Mythal - instead of saying "What in Andraste's name"
  • multiple line changes to include elven language/phrases/swearing (including adding lines to the conversation with Sten if he's in the party)

Uldred

One of Uldred's responses to the Warden refers to the Chantry as "your Chantry." Obviously, this doesn't apply to a Dalish elf, but the only way to fix that is to edit the audio, and at this point, because of the additional work to change the lines and facial animation, it's not worth it to edit out just one word.

  • extensive edits and additions to vanilla lines across multiple conversation choices to add elven language/phrases/swearing
  • added a new opening line specifically for a mage (for those that use the Dalish Mage - Origin mod)
  • changed a medium intelligence check for a line about abominations to a simple class check for a mage (reason- because the line makes more sense for a player who has studied and understands magic)
  • changed a low intelligence check for a line "What exactly are you doing here?" to be available for anyone who isn't a Circle mage (reason- it makes sense that non-Circle/ non-mage Wardens wouldn't completely comprehend what is happening)
  • added a comment the player can make if they spoke to and handled the Templar/Desire Demon scene a certain way
  • compatibility - Uldred should not refer to you as a Circle mage if you use and play with the Dalish Mage - Origin mod

Keili

  • based on the original vanilla choices - you can choose to brush her off or be kind
  • edits to add appropriate lines or responses for a Dalish elf and non-Andrastian (choice of attitudes to take with her)
  • added a line where you could simply not answer her when she starts to talk about her Andrastian beliefs
  • compatibility - Keili should not refer to you as a Circle mage if you use and play with the Dalish Mage - Origin mod

Kinnon

  • edits to add appropriate lines or responses for a Dalish elf using elven language/phrases/religion
  • in response to the comments on Loghain, I gave the Warden the choice to respond based on their Dalish heritage and beliefs
  • compatibility - Kinnon should not refer to you as a Circle mage if you use and play with the Dalish Mage - Origin mod

Urn of Sacred Ashes

Gauntlet Tamlen

  • adds a special line for Mahariel if they were in love with him
  • adds elven language/phrases as a part of your vanilla response choices

Guardian

  • adds lines specific to Dalish elves, with elven phrases when appropriate
  • also adds some choice answers for Wardens who aren't Andrastian (appear for non-Dalish as well)
  • a response specifically for non-human races
  • edits the two questions about the dragon (something I personally wanted) to be a bit more feisty
  • adds a few sassy responses (it's fun!)

Brother Genitivi

  • extensive edits to multiple conversations adding elven phrases and words
  • added edited vanilla lines with elven phrases where appropriate (including the "evil" lines)
  • added a choice phrase for non-Andrastians (appear for non-Dalish as well) when discussing the Temple traps
  • fixed a weird bug (?) where your conversation with Genitivi in the Ruined Temple doesn't end properly (you would get thrown back into the conversation even after making a dialogue choice to end it)
  • a fix to your conversation about Weylon so that it now matches the storyline (changed basement to home) - seems like a simple oversight by the writers
  • rephrased the question about the Ashes healing Arl Eamon (I always found the phrasing awkward so this was a personal choice)
  • tried to clean up the conversation tree (too many tweaks to list)

Revered Father Eirik

I focused more on the conversation he initiates with the Warden if you've explored Haven and discovered the "strange" things happening in the village and/or turned people hostile. Cause, in my opinion, he's an arrogant jerk (and a murderer). So I usually want to tell him off.

  • adds lines specific to Dalish elves, with elven phrases when appropriate
  • a few responses specifically for elves - Dalish or City origin or Circle mage
  • edits to a few vanilla dialogue choices to be more sassy or polite
  • various edits to the overall conversation
  • a small reference (kinda Easter eggish I guess) to DAI mixed in somewhere in the conversation answers

Haven Entrance Guard

  • adds elven greetings - I tried to give choices based on the two different attitudes the Warden might have toward humans
  • adds a more appropriate response for a Dalish Warden when discussing Haven's choice to use men as priests in the Chantry
  • edits some vanilla lines that I felt had awkward wording for the tone of the conversation

Unrest in the Alienage

Shianni

Shianni's conversation is a focal point of this entire quest, and I made too many changes to write down, so this is the summary. The changes made to allow Mahariel to refer to elves in the alienage as "flat-ears" for role-playing purposes were done based on the request in the comments.

  • changed initial greetings to Dalish-based ones (or "appropriate" greetings, depending on how you role-play the relationship of City vs. Dalish elves)
  • all greetings lead to the same response from Shianni (unless you're a dwarf), so I wrote 3 new ones for a Dalish elf Warden based on original vanilla choices
  • gave the Warden multiple choices to call her a flat-ear for role-playing purposes
  • adjusted the questions about magic and the Chantry to one more appropriate for a Dalish Warden ("the Chantry" to "your Chantry")
  • added a response for any mage (Dalish or otherwise) to use for one of Shianni's vanilla comments
  • added or edited multiple vanilla responses with Dalish language, swearing, or otherwise adjusted for Mahariel to be a nice Dalish elf or one who dislikes non-Dalish elves and doesn't respect them
  • tried to clean up areas of the dialogue tree that appeared convoluted/redundant

Tevinter Mages - Veras

Spoiler:
Show
No matter what you say to Shianni, if you play as an elf and speak to the Tevinters, they will immediately respond as if you're ill, even if you didn't intend to sneak in that way. That is Bioware's original story choice, so I didn't change that.

  • allows you to be more colorful in response to this accusation if you choose to argue
  • if you do not argue, you can give a vanilla choice with elven language now added

Valendrian

  • allows you to respond with elven language, respect, or just call him a flat-ear
  • edits to your conversation in his home- about Duncan and when he gives you the "thank you" gift
  • added a response where you could respectfully refer to him as "hahren" considering your understanding of that word as meaning "elder" for the elven people
  • allows you to now actually say a farewell greeting/thanks of your choice after the gift
  • for continuity, I also added farewells for non-Dalish origin Wardens to use (in case you play more than one character or a different race with this mod installed)

Tevinter Guard (outside apartments)

Spoiler:
Show
Every response causes the group to attack you, so I simply added two additional ones for elves.

It looked like the Bioware writers tried to make it a bit comical, so I made the lines melodramatic. Both new responses work for Dalish elves- one works for all elves (so City/Dalish/Circle).

Devera (Caladrius' elven bodyguard)

I kept my edits to this conversation to match the original vanilla lines, allowing for different role-play:  righteous fury, anger from an elven perspective, a willingness to compromise, or "I've got no interest in fighting you or your Tevinter minions"

Spoiler:
Show
I changed the line "You're slavers?!" for Dalish elves because it always sounded too shocked to me, considering how much evidence the Warden sees about people being taken away. I think Dalish elves wouldn't be so naive to think it was unthinkable that humans are enslaving elves against their will, considering their history.

  • allows you to respond with elven language, call her a flat ear, call her out for her behavior against other elves, or disregard her completely ("I don't care")
  • choices still require persuasion and intimidation checks- I didn't change those
  • vanilla lines were edited or added to with elven language and/or elven threats and mentions of the elven pantheon/religion
  • extended conversation so that if you choose to call her out on being an elf assisting Tevinter uh, kidnappers... you don't miss the rest of the dialogue (originally you did-I caught that in testing)

Hospice Side Entrance Guard

  • small edits for some elven phrases for the bribe or if you use the threat choice
  • persuasion/threat checks were not changed

Elven Captive

  • added the ability to say "you are free" in elven- when/if you release the elves
  • changed the dialogue so that you can ask about both Valendrian and the other elves that were taken (originally you couldn't- the conversation would end after asking about Valendrian)
