About this mod

This fixes the gamma mismatch that blizzard introduced when adapting their SDR presentation to HDR, which causes the black levels to look "washed out" in HDR.

Through whatever processes Blizzard went through to adapt their SDR presentation into HDR, Blizzard made a fairly common mistake which is to end up giving the HDR presentation a 2.2 piecewise gamma curve despite developing the SDR presentation on a 2.2 power gamma curve. The end result is that the black levels for the HDR presentation have a washed out look, and in this case it's tied to the "brightness" adjustment in the HDR calibration menu.

This reshade preset fixes this mistake, resulting in black levels that match the SDR presentation. This reshade preset is intended to realize the artists intent. This is a fix for the default HDR settings.

As a little flourish, there is a preset that includes an HDR modified version of CAS by Lilium. This is a much higher quality sharpening filter than the one used by the game, especially for HDR. If using that preset, make sure to set the games regular sharpening to 0.

Installation

  • Download Reshade without addon support.
  • Download my preset files and extract to the Diablo IV install directory.
  • Run the Reshade installation, selecting Diablo IV.exe.
  • Select DX12
  • Make sure you point the installer to the preset file you plan to use, and then continue until finished.
  • In-game, go to the brightness settings and ensure you're using the default settings. Adjust White Point for your screen's peak brightness.
    • If you want to adjust the in-game brightness slider away from default, choose your value and then open reshade and set the SDR Black Floor Emulation Processing Cutoff to the same value.
