~ Dark Souls overhaul created for LobosJr and St Jude PLAY LIVE ~

This mod is only compatible with Dark Souls: Remastered.
(I have no plans to port it to the original game and it likely would not even be able to run it.)

Obvious disclaimer: DO NOT PLAY THIS MOD ONLINE.
DESCRIPTION

I volunteered my services to make this extremely off-beat mod for LobosJr (twitch.tv/LobosJr) for the end of his St Jude PLAY LIVE charity fundraiser in May 2019. It's basically an entirely new 'spin-off' of Dark Souls created using the original assets. I asked Lobos's community to come up with some designs for 'puzzles' set in individual levels, and ended up combining them and some ideas of my own into a brand new adventure set in Lordran.

I won't say much more, because it's very difficult to explain, you probably know what you're getting into here anyway. If you're not familiar with the mod, heed these warnings:

  • This mod contains quite a few references to Lobos's stream, particularly some highlights/memes that came out of 2019's fundraiser. You may not find these references very funny. I'm so sorry.
  • Some of those in-jokes come in the form of intentionally difficult and frustrating moments. You have my complete blessing to Cheat Engine yourself directly through such times. In general, this is not a 'balanced' mod, and has less emphasis on combat in any case.
  • I bug-tested this just enough to be confident that Lobos would not run into any issues on a single playthrough on his stream, but I'm sure you'll find some if you look hard enough. (I recommend you don't look hard, because I won't be releasing any bug fixes, sadly.)
  • NG+ is probably a bit broken because some key items carry over, but you're welcome to try it and see what happens.
  • The mod contains exactly one (1) Shrek meme.

Again, I won't be releasing bug fixes for this mod (aside from any mistakes on my end in uploading it to Nexus). You can watch Lobos's full playthrough here if you'd prefer - it's the kind of mod that's likely more entertaining with a few thousand people enjoying it together.

INSTALLATION

I haven't created an executable installer for this one. All the modded game files are contained in the zip. Extract these files directly into your DARK SOULS REMASTERED folder (you should get plenty of file overwrite warnings). You can use a mod manager to handle this. (If not, make sure you back up your original game files first, or be prepared to perform a Steam file validation to get them back.)

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thank you to everyone who showed such generosity to St Jude during May, and to Lobos for hosting such a great event. If you enjoyed the mod and haven't already, please consider donating to St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Special thanks to people who directly contributed:

  • ACOG_Muffins for some incredible voice work. (I also put an easter egg in the mod for ACOG in a secret item description. Lobos sadly missed it, but maybe you'll find it.)
  • soycrates for custom game banners.
  • thefifthmatt and soycrates for designing the 'level' set in Anor Londo.
  • rf34 for designing the 'level' set in the Depths.

Everything else designed by me, so you know who to blame for... that item. (I also added all the rats to rf34's design for the Depths.)

Thanks, as always, to the Dark Souls / FromSoft games modding community for their tools and assistance. Particular shout-outs to HotPocketRemix, katalash, AinTunez, TKGP, Meowmaritus, and wulf2k for designing tools that make modding these game much easier (if not just possible at all).

NOTES ON MODDING
Most of the 'wild' parts of my mods are done by extensive editing of the game's event scripts. These scripts are written in a fairly simple but low-level language deciphered by HotPocketRemix in 2017, and after torturing myself for a long time working with this language directly for DoA, I finally sat down and designed a higher-level language I call EVS (EVent Scripting) that lets you write event scripts without tearing your hair out over errors with line skips and condition registers.

The language is based on Python, and you can use all the features of a Python IDE (auto-completion, type checking, etc.) while writing it. As of recently, you can also 'decompile' the game's event scripts to my high-level language as a starting point for editing. EVS also supports Dark Souls 3 and even Bloodborne, though the latter is obviously highly difficult to actually mod. Sekiro support will come at some point. (Dark Souls 2, in classic black sheep fashion, does not use the usual event scripts.)

It paid off immediately, because there's no way I would've been able to make this mod in two weeks without it. I'm telling you this to let you know that it's becoming easier and easier to mod FromSoft games on PC. This mod is probably a good showcase of that. There are also plenty of other incredible tools being developed by other modders, as you may see fairly soon if you've been watching Lobos play through the first proper Bloodborne mod. (Hint: katalash actually did it.)

Check it EVS here if you're interested, and join us on the FromSoft modding Discord.
