About this mod

Dark Souls: Daughters of Ash is a massive re-imagining and expansion of Dark Souls. It features new bosses, enemies, characters, storylines, weapons, and items, expanded lore, and many new secrets. It offers both modified and brand new content, much of which cannot be discovered in one play-through.

Latest version: 1.6.0

Version 1.6.0 supports Dark Souls: Remastered version 1.03.1 (November 2022). There are no changes to the PTDE version.

Update list for 1.5.2:
  • Incorrect file in PTDE installation has been fixed (PTDE only).
  • (No updates to the DSR version, but the version number has been made consistent anyway.)

Update list for 1.5.1:
  • Crashes in Undead Burg and Darkroot Basin are fixed (DSR only).
  • Ransacker Rune loot table has been fixed (more item variety).

Update list for 1.5.0:

  • PTDE and DSR versions of the mod now use the same installer.
  • New boss music tracks now respect your volume settings and alt-tabbing.
  • Horned Scourge hitboxes have been fixed.
  • Seath's questline has been tweaked. You must show him a certain weapon rather than just have it.
  • Havel's disappearance from the Archives is less missable.
  • Eingyi sells Egg Vermifuge, Poison Mist, and Toxic Mist.
  • The ladder in upper Blighttown will hopefully not clip you through the floor as often.
  • Gwynevere's Ring can be traded to Snuggly for Tranquil Walk of Peace.
  • Undead Rapport has been improved.
  • Omphalic Rune has been fixed. (It gives you a buff when you respawn after killing multiple enemies.)
  • Enemies with non-functional AI have been fixed (in DSR).
  • Issues talking to Andre and Laurentius have hopefully been fixed (in DSR).
  • Numerous other minor/rare bugs and text typos have been fixed.

Many thanks to everyone who has expressed a wish to donate, or has already done so.

Thank you also to everyone who sent me nice messages and constructive feedback. This was the first video game project I ever released,
and I'm grateful to those who were patient with me as I ironed out all the bugs and found better ways to explain what it was really about.

Dark Souls: Daughters of Ash is an enormous fan-made overhaul of Dark Souls. Its main goal is to recapture the feeling of playing Dark Souls for the first time by both adding new story events (without creating new game assets) and remixing existing content. To this end, I won't spoil much, but expect to encounter:

  • New game progression
    • Your route through Lordran may not be the same. New world-changing events, key items, and unexpected pathways await you.
  • New bosses and enemies
    • Triumph in new and modified boss battles, most of which are designed to provide novel challenges rather than simple harder ones.
    • Encounter new enemies on your journey – including enemies restored from cut content – and watch many old enemies behave in new ways.
  • New NPCs and storylines
    • Meet new characters with brand new questlines, whose paths will intersect in numerous unpredictable ways as your journey continues.
    • The stories of familiar characters may also take unexpected turns.
  • New weapons, items, and mechanics
    • Discover new weapons with brand new abilities, some of which may require keen insights to master.
    • Most existing equipment will not be exactly the way you remember.
    • Add interesting challenges to your play-through from the very beginning of the game using a certain starting gift.
  • Expanded lore
    • Learn more about Lordran's past from new item descriptions and gameplay events.
    • (NOTE: I've tried to craft all new lore content so that it builds upon the lore of the original game, rather than directly conflict with it.)
  • New secrets
    • Don't expect to unveil all of the game's hidden content by yourself in one play-through.

Daughters of Ash has more overall content than the original game and is much more complex, with more dynamic story events and branching paths to take throughout the game. It contains no new game assets (e.g. character models, map assets, dialogue recordings, visual effects) but expands and refreshes the experience by modifying the game's event scripts, placement data, and entity logic. It was created with more than one thousand hours of work throughout 2017 and 2018 by one very masochistic programmer with the wonderful tools and loving support of the Dark Souls modding community. See the screenshots for examples of sights you might encounter in the first ten minutes.

The full change log for past updates can now be found in the readme included in the patch zip (theoretically; bear with me as I eventually migrate the full history of changes into it). Only major changes are listed below.

This version of the mod is for Dark Souls: Remastered only. The Prepare to Die Edition version has almost identical content, but requires different mod files.

Step 1: Ensure you have the latest version of Dark Souls: Remastered on Steam.

  • I make no effort to support illegal copies of the game, and you may encounter serious issues if you attempt to use such a copy.

Step 2: Go offline on Steam.

  • Unlike the original version of Dark Souls, large online mods are basically completely off-limits in Dark Souls: Remastered.
  • I take no responsibility for what happens when you take this mod online. You have been warned!

Step 3: Download the mod and run InstallDSDoA.exe.

  • The installer is required to edit the game engine itself, as legal issues prevent me from directly uploading a modified version of the game executable.
  • Do NOT just copy the data folder into your game directory. The installer will copy these files for you after making a backup.

Step 4: If there is a patch available with a higher version, download it and extract the DSR subfolder into the game directory.

  • You don't need to download a patch that has the same version number as the installer you used. These same-numbered patches are offered so people with the previous installer version can download a small file rather than re-downloading all the data files (most of which won't change).

  • HotPocketRemix for UDSFM, his EMEVD work, and his FSB work.
  • Meowmaritus for ParamVessel, MeowScript, and Model Viewer.
  • wulf2k for BND Rebuilder, MSB Editor, FMG Editor, and Param Editor.
  • loosepolygon for DarkSoulsAnimTool and ScriptListEdit.
  • TKGP for Yabber.
  • FTRichter for a couple of ideas and his general comraderie.
