Equipable footstep sound replacers for Equipment-EX

Now with Virtual Atelier!

This mod provides footstep sound replacer items that can be equipped via Equipment-EX and will override the (lack of) default footsteps sound in many older (pre-2.0) footwear mods.

This can also be used to change the sound of newer footwear mods that do provide sound effects - so you can make sneakers sound like boots and vice-versa.

This is my first mod ever and is very, very beta.  Expect bugs.

These equip to the Left Toe slot in Equipment-EX and are meant to be used alongside other footwear items.

You must have a default footwear item equipped in the inventory screen.

Please read the installation instructions and known issues below. Modded footwear in general do have some bugs relating to sound effects, and this mod adds potential for a couple more.  It does work fairly reliably, but you need to follow the steps.

Installation/Activation Instructions:

  • Install the mod from the mod page.  I don't use Vortex, I have no idea if it works through there or not.  I suggest manual installation.
  • Optionally, install the Evelyn add-on and Atelier store.
  • Purchase the items from the Atelier, or use the provided CET codes to add them to your inventory. You can disassemble them once you have them; you only need them in your wardrobe.
  • Ensure you have a default shoe equipped on the equipment screen.  You must have a default shoe equipped or footstep sounds will not play for any wardrobe footwear.
  • Open the Equipment-EX wardrobe and create/edit your outfit.  As the last step, select a FoostepsFX option in the Left Toes slot.
  • Save your outfit.
  • Select the No Outfit option in the wardrobe screen, and then re-select your new outfit.
  • Resume the game.  If the sounds still don't work, go back to the wardrobe, and repeat the process of selecting No Outfit, and then your desired outfit.  This is by far the flakiest part of the mod -- sometimes you need to do this more than once.
  • If you edit your outfit's footwear in the future, remove and re-equip the FootstepsFX item. FootstepsFX will not work if they are equipped before the actual shoes.

When launching the game, if your character is already wearing a FootstepsFX item, I suggest immediately reloading your save. The sounds won't play on a fresh launch, and while you can do the No Outfit - Outfit swap from the instructions above to get them working, a quick reload is easy and so far seems to be 100% reliable.

I know the above process is flaky, but there are no scripts in this mod and I'm limited in what I can do to make this work reliably. Many of these issues do apply to most modded footwear.

Known issues:

On launching the game, the footstep sounds don't play.

Simply reload your most recent save, and the sound effects should start working. I highly suggest doing this every time you start the game. Thanks to ParasiteX for finding this workaround.

The footstep sounds stop playing after switching outfits.

When switching outfits in the EEX wardrobe, select "No Outfit" before selecting your desired outfit, and sounds should play correctly. You may need to do this more than once.

The footstep sounds stop working after editing an outfit.

If you change the footwear on an outfit, you must remove and reapply your desired FootstepsFX item.  Don't ask me why; if you do the sound effect first, and then change shoes, it won't work anymore.

Known conflicts:

The base file should have no conflicts, however the Evelyn add-on will conflict with any mod that edits cooked_metadata.audio_metadata, including:

as well as likely many other audio replacer mods.

CET codes:
