What’s been done:
- Campaign cutscenes between missions were processed with an AI upscaler, increasing their resolution from the original 640×480p (in RA2) to 960х720p, 1024×768p, 1200x900p, 1440x1080p.
- Cutscenes in RA2YR were also enhanced via upscaling, but kept at their native 800×600 resolution since the game scales them properly in-game. Changing the resolution of these files leads to crashes or graphical glitches.
- All videos are preserved in a 4:3 aspect ratio, as forcing them into 16:9 results in heavy stretching and distortion.
- FPS increased from the original 15 frames per second to 30 fps.
- Interlacing artifacts were smoothed out — these were present because the original cutscenes were encoded in an interlaced format.
- In-game cutscenes (which replace the minimap during gameplay) were left untouched due to their extremely low resolution (140×110p). Upscaling these results in graphical issues and no visual benefit.
- In Yuri's Revenge, the opening cinematic and the mission cinematic on the Moon are not voiced - they were replaced by versions from "Fargus".
How to install movies:
- Go to your installed game folder and back up the following files:
MOVIES01.MIX
,MOVIES02.MIX
,movmd03.mix
. - Set your in-game resolution to any with a height of at least 720p, 768p, 900p, 1080p.
- Copy the files from the archive, replacing the originals.
How to install units sounds & text & subtitles:
- Download the archive you need.
- Go to the game folder and make a backup of the same files as the files in the archive.
- Copy the files from the archive to the game folder with replacement.
Known issues & solutions:
- If your in-game resolution is set lower than the video resolution you choose (720p, 768p, 900p, 1080p), the game may crash. Always use a resolution that is equal to or higher.
- If you use a higher resolution (e.g. 1440p or above), the cutscenes in the original Red Alert 2 may appear smaller and smaller. The game does not automatically scale videos to fit the screen height, even though such an option exists in config files — it simply doesn't work.
