World of Lore Map – DragonFable

This mod adds a detailed, handcrafted map of DragonFable's variation of the world of Lore into Civilization V (also seen on AdventureQuest and other Artix Entertainment games).

It encompasses the travel map seen on DragonFable's Book 3, including areas that can be visited by the player, as well as those that cannot.

This mod is vanilla-friendly and does not require G&K, BNW or any other DLC.

Installation:

To install this map, you can either:

  • Create a new folder for the mod inside Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Mods and extract the contents of the .zip file inside.
or
  • Simply drag and drop the MojaveWastelandFNV.Civ5Map file inside Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Maps.

If you do not have a Mods or Maps folder, you can simply create one. For Mac and Linux installations, extract the files in the equivalent directory for that OS.

You can also download the mod through the Steam Workshop.

How to play:

Subscribe to the mod or download it from a third-party mirror. When choosing a map, click on Additional Maps → and scroll down until you find "World of Lore - DragonFable".

Map details:

  • Map dimensions are 120x80. In other words, 120 tiles in width and 80 tiles in height. This makes it only 8 tiles shorter than a regular Huge map.
  • Map size is set to Huge and cannot be changed in the match setup. This will affect Warmongering, Unhappiness, Tech Cost, and Policy Cost modifiers. You can learn more about that here.
  • The map has quite a lot of flat terrain, which makes travel easier but will difficult production.
  • Resources and goodie huts are randomly generated upon the start of the game based on your match settings. No resources or improvements have been placed by hand.
  • Three (5) natural wonders can be found throughout the map, which were used to represent key locations on Lore. These wonders are the Fountain of Youth (Sunbreeve Grove), King Solomon's Mines (Lymcrest), Lake Victoria (representing the largest lake on the map) and two copies of the Krakatoa (Xan's Fortress and the volcano at Maar).
  • The map has continent definitions for the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Some were chosen for playability, some were chosen for aesthetics.
  • The map does not have a World Wrap, meaning there are two invisible walls covered by Fog of War on both the left and right extremes, preventing you from teleporting to the other side.
  • And finally, the map does NOT come with a scenario, although that might change in the future.

Final notes:

The core idea behind this mod was to create a map that accurately represented the world of Lore from DragonFable. This was done by overlaying a hex grid on top of different maps from Lore (the in-game travel map, sailing map and official artwork) with image editing software and then carefully handpicking the most appropriate tileset.

Some artistic liberties where taken in that regard. For instance, DragonFable's official maps feature a lot of flat terrain, in this case, I tried to remain as true to the game as possible.

The sailing map for the Pale Sea also features a different coastline than Book 3's Falconreach travel map. For this mod, I decided to use only take into consideration the travel map's coastline in this particular case as it's by far the most well known of the two.

For areas that can not be explored by the player in-game, I used the color scheme of official artwork and interpreted the terrain based on them.

I also spread terrain features in inaccesible areas in a semi-random fashion based on Civilization V's terrain generation, using automatically generated WorldBuilder maps as reference.

Changelog:

Version 1.0:
• Initial release.

Known bugs:

• Krakatoa's model is invisible. This is a well known bug and I have some ideas on how to fix it.
