The Oakeshott Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established by Christopher Poor in 2000. The Institute is named after the late Ewart Oakeshott, a leading authority on European arms and armor. Ewart spent a lifetime researching and collecting swords. His collection, now entrusted to The Oakeshott Institute, contains more than 75 pieces and spans nearly 4000 years of history including a sword from the First Crusade and a Scandinavian sword from the Bronze Age.
The Oakeshott Institute’s mission is to promote the interest in ancient arms and armor through a hands-on educational approach.
An example of the classic Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, paired with its original scabbard. The Pattern 1796 was the second in a series of attempts to standardize the swords used by British cavalry at the end of the 18th Century. Replacing the earlier Pattern 1788, this blade has a highly accentuated curve, making it excellent in the cut. This particular piece is highly decorated, with a blue and gilt blade featuring a Royal Cypher with crown, drums and banners, as well as extensive foliage across the blued scrollwork background. The grip is composed of shark skin bound by wire, enhancing the user’s grip should the sword become wet. A sword knot would have been worn around the wrist, prevent the weapon from being lost in the case of it coming out of the hand during use.
