* ahem *

I like scythes. If you're here, you probably like scythes, too. However, for as cool as all of the other, like, three available scythe mods that are out there as I'm writing this (1/26/23), I've found very few of them to be practical or comfortable when swung around in VR. Simply Scythe was made to address this.

This mod only adds one weapon (a scythe), found in the Exotics tab of the equipment book. The model is made by myself, which I designed specifically for use in B&S. There's nothing fancy about it, other than the rather strong opinions that went into its design (no decorations, correct angle of the blade, comfortable size, etc.)

If you enjoy this mod, I'm glad! This is my first mod! I'm a big Scythe Enjoyer, so as long as I keep playing B&S, I'll probably keep this one up-to-date. I may also make more mods in the future, but no promises. Perhaps I will expand this mod with more scythes, though right now, I feel like this is unnecessary.

Known Bugs

As of yet, there aren't many known bugs, other than that sometimes, the weapon can get stuck in enemies. I don't know how to fix this quite yet, but if you really wiggle things around, and maybe push things with gravity a bit, it should unstick itself.

Also, while it isn't a bug (more of a lack of features in the SDK), the blade cannot penetrate in a curved shape, so it only penetrates to a certain depth. If anyone knows a way to achieve that type of effect, please let me know!

Cool Scythe Facts

I'm no HEMA expert, but I've been trying to learn how to actually use weapons, for the sake of mastering this game. While you may find tutorial videos on guards for swords and polearm weapons, there is little to no information on scythes. From my own experimentation, and thinking, here's what I can provide to you if you want to learn how to better use this scythe:

  • One of the scythe's biggest strengths is its area control. Simply keeping it out in front of you poses a big threat to enemies who will often try and step and thrust into you.
  • Another big perk of the scythe is that shields become useless, if not a handicap for the enemy. You can swing right around them. Do be careful, though, not to catch the blade on your opponent's weapon(s) and get stuck.
  • Unlike an agricultural scythe, this scythe blade is straight and double-edged. Further, unlike the vast majority of polearm weapons, when you thrust with this scythe, you cut; when you swing with this weapon, you pierce. This is the opposite of the way most weapons work.
  • Continuing from the previous point; this scythe, unlike other weapons, can decapitate with a good thrust, and has a highly maneuverable point with a lot of weight behind it, which can be aimed for weak spots, such as under the arms.
  • I've found that it's best to understand and treat the scythe as a giant warpick. Bjorn Ruther has a fantastic video showcasing how these weapons were used historically. His channel, in general, I highly recommend.

If you think any of the above information is inaccurate, or could be improved or added to, I would love to start a larger conversation about scythe technique. After all, B&S is a singleplayer game, and so it's difficult to assess tactics when you can't spar with another human. I encourage you to leave a post! Either that, or feel free to DM me @Xarlasar#9999 on Discord.
