O Gol foi um carro de classe media a alta. Feito para substituir o Fusca/Beetle no brasil, ele já em 1986 (apenas 6 anos depois de seu lançamento em 1980 na carroceria BX com o motor do fusca.) Já superou as vendas do Fusca. E em 1987 ele começou com essa carroceria do mod e com motor AP e CHT da Ford (o CHT foi introduzido por causa da Autolatina a união entre a Volkswagen e a Ford do Brasil/joy-venture das montadoras)
