About this mod

Increases/multiplies chance of encountering champions. Compatible with mods that adding new enemy. Multiple versions: x5, x10, x25.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Unlike other mods working on enemy individually, this mod increases chance of encountering champions overall. It should be compatible with other mods and future DLCs.

This mod doesn't 'add' champions. Instead it increases the chance of potential enemies becoming a champion, like the mechanic of the bounty hunter in retinue.

This mod works upon loading saves. You don't need to start a new game.

+100% means every enemy can possibly be a champion is now a champion. x25 means chance is multiplied by 25. See Explanation below for details.

DLC Warrior of North is not required, though you need it to have champions in game. 
DLC Blazing Desert is not required.

Modding scripts hooks is required.

How to use:
Download the zip file and place it in Steam\steamapps\common\Battle Brothers\data .


WARNING:
Champion spawned in a scouted camp cannot be undone. If you're using +100% version, you may encounter 10+ orc champions in an orc camp or 20+ goblin champions in a goblin camp, which can be difficult to handle. You can load a game before scouting those camps and using another version to erase the effect though.

  • Effect on Goblin Ambusher and Goblin Skirmisher is drastically reduced (divided by 5).
  • Effect on Orc Warrior and Barbarian Chosen is reduced (divided by 2.5).

Explanation

Let's say, you have 10 brigand leaders in a camp. In vanilla game, chance of brigand leaders becoming a champion is 1%. If one of the leaders is turned into champion, there will be 1 named champion and 9 unnamed brigand leaders in this camp. With a +50% version mod, the chance is now 51%.

If champion chance of brigand leader is modified individually by changing ".Variant" value in "scripts/config/spawnlist_master.nut" like it in other mods, assuming it is changed to 10% from 1%, then together with a +50% version of this mod, the chance now is 60% = 10% + 50%. For that camp, it's very possible to have 6 named champions and 4 unnamed brigand leaders now. If we take bounty hunter into consideration, the chance now is 63% = 60% + 3%.

If there's not brigand leader, only raiders and thugs in the camp before this mod, there's still no champion with this mod.

Using plus-chance version can be troublesome in early game, that's why multiply-chance version comes. In the first 90 days of game, champion chance is decreased by 1%. Champion chance of goblin skirmisher is 1%. Without this mod, you won't find a champion goblin without help of bounty hunter or 3-star contract. With a +50% version, half of goblins will become champions. An ambush by champion goblins in early game can be devastating. If we use x25 version, we won't encounter champion goblins in early games without help of bounty hunter or 3-star contracts. If we have bounty hunter before 90 days, champion chance of goblin is 75% = 25 x (1% + 3% - 1%). After 90 days with bounty hunter, it's 100% = 25 x (1% + 3%).


Champion chance = enemy's variant + contract modifier + bounty hunter bonus + early campaign protection

  • enemy's variant: certain enemies can turn into champion. Its value ranges: 1% - 10%. See Battle Brothers wiki for details.
  • contract modifier: -99% for 1-star contract, 0% for 2-star, +5% for 3-star. For enemy that's not contract-related, it's 0%.
  • bounty hunter bonus: 3% if you have bounty hunter in retinue, otherwise it's 0%.
  • early campaign protection: -1% in first 90 days.
