Sorry Batstarion, you're no longer the only cute bat in Tav/Durge's heart!
Blurg in the Myconid Colony has come across a peculiar tree stump during his research on the Underdark's native species. The stump is vibrating strangely, but if you're curious enough, Blurg will part with it for a fair amount of gold.
Inside the stump, you'll find a little bat (an item). Pet the bat and you'll summon an adorable new friend.
Meet Nightwing, a quirky little fella who will grow up as he adventures with your group.
Nightwing has 4 stages:
Baby, if Tav's level is between 3 and 5.
Small, for levels 6-7.
Medium sized, for levels 8-9.
Adult, for 10+.
Every time he grows up, not only his stats increase and he will get new skills, but he will also change in size and his skin will start to develop a pattern.
He will begin as a little derpy, fully black baby who can only bite and can't even fly properly (that's cause when he's very small the edges of his wings clash with each other a little 😛 I have no idea how to edit animations but it amuses me a lot so I left him like that 😂 he's learning, ok?), and slowly develop spots on his wings and new skills until he becomes a majestic, beautifully patterned exemplar of adult bat.
Nightwing was loosely inspired by the info I found on Night Hunter bats on the dnd wiki. I tried to make him somewhat true to the description there but with space for imagination. For instance, he has Darkvision and Blindsight.
That's cute and all! But Nightwing is a very moody little friend, and just like real life pets, he needs to be fed or he will become grumpy.
When grumpy, he emits a disturbing echolocation that will mess up the brainwaves of the party, causing a dazed status and some little damage.
It lasts enough to be acceptable for players irl, 300 turns. He will not stop unless killed, dismissed or fed.
Nightwing adores delicious, plump frogs. For starters, you'll find one serving of his favorite food inside the stump.
To feed him, just take the frog and throw it to him. (It's literally the only way, you must throw it like you would a snack to a puppy). Don't eat the frog, it has no effects on humanoids. It's only for him.
Once he has eaten, he will become well fed for another many turns. A happy pet makes for a happy owner, and your group will get some saving throw bonuses!
(edit- the whole passive can now be toggled on/off)
You should be able to buy these frogs from many vendors around the game in stacks of 5, I put them a bit randomly but most of the major ones will have it, and also added it to some supplies or food stores.
The stump will automatically collect your frogs, and it will also auto collect the item version of Nightwing if you relocate it - he likes hiding in there.
Maybe in the future I'll make the stump wearable as an instrument, kinda like pets or baby backpacks or whatever they're called. For now it's just a bag to carry around. It has zero weight but only Nightwing and the frogs can go inside.
Last, for fun or camp decor you can place both the stump and the bat item that summons Nightwing on the ground, stacked one on top of the other, and it looks like he's floating above his nest. I didn't do that on purpose but found out by chance 😂 (see images)
