About this mod

Adds the "See Invisibility" buff to Ethel's Eye.

INSTALL MINDFULLY. This mod hasn't been extensively tested: I tested for immediate function (ie does it apply the buff) so if you install it, you're volunteering to be my guinea pig. Back up your saves, etc etc.

So, this mod does two things:

1) Applies SEE INVISIBILITY buff to HAG-EYED, which means that when you take Ethel's deal, you receive the permanent SEE INVISIBILITY buff that is usually only given to you by Volo's eye.

2) Removes the 0% chance to crit from HAG-EYED.

The visuals for the eye do not change. The disadvantage on perception, minor intimidation buff, and disadvantage against hags do not change. I made this mod for roleplaying purposes: my character is multi-classed as a fey-patroned warlock, who would absolutely allow Ethel to take their eye on the off-chance that she can remove the parasite. There is no universe where they allow Volo near their eye with an ice pick of any size or variety, and personally I don't like the floating eye visual effect on the See Invisibility spell, but I DO like the one milky white eye the hag gives you (and I hate the one creepy human blue eye Volo gives you). I thought it was a little unfair that the otherwise perfectly safe and honestly not really all that deceptive (she DOES try to remove the parasite, she just can't and doesn't care that much) hag eye had more drawbacks and less benefits than letting a strange man jab a weapon into your brain.

The integration of this mod does have some limitations:

1) Installing AFTER YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE HAG'S EYE does not retroactively give you the buff.

This is due to a couple of reasons: first of all, this mod is pure improvisation on my part. It was hard for me to find the files and hard for me to make the desired effect happen, so there wasn't a lot of wiggle room for me to experiment nor good examples of how to do the thing I wanted. With that in mind, I had to do two things: apply the buff, and make the buff appear in the UI so that you could tell it was applied.

The limitation of no retroactively applied buff comes with how the buff is applied in the regular game, via an event trigger (ie Volo gives you the fake eye, which happens once, and then for the rest of the game you have the "See Invisibility" buff). I modified the HAG-EYED trigger to give you the same buff that Volo's new eye does—and so, by extension, if you've already triggered that event, then the buff does not get applied. I thought about linking it to something else, but it truly has to be linked to something that DOES NOT HAPPEN MORE THAN ONCE. Ideal functionality for this mod would have a trigger that could be set off at any time but never more than once, which is something that doesn't exist.

Think of it as missing a sale at the grocery store: you already bought toilet paper a month ago, and so you can't get the 2-for-1 deal that's on right now.

2) Uninstalling AFTER YOU HAVE TAKEN THE HAG'S EYE AND RECEIVED THE BUFF does not remove the buff.

What can I say? It's a permanent buff and following the same logic as before, event is ALREADY triggered and so the permanent buff is ALREADY applied. Whether or not your critical chance changes...I genuinely don't know, as I don't know where to look in the UI to see that debuff (because "Paid the Price" only tells you about the Intimidation buff and Perception debuff). If that doesn't bother you, then...sure, okay. Potato Potato, my save loaded on an uninstall even though the UI had a bit of a sulk about me having uninstalled a mod—as near as I can tell, it does not break the save to uninstall.

If that does bother you, don't install the mod: again, the buff isn't a "+ See Invisibility", the buff is at the moment you receive the eye, PERMANENT SEE INVISIBILITY is created and applied in that moment. Just like you can't go back in time for a better deal, neither can you go back in time for a worse deal.

3) Your passives menu will display as if you've received Volo's eye.

So as I said in my first point, besides being functional I wanted to give you a display to indicate that the mod is working (and frequently when I tested without present UI elements, the buffs didn't seem to work so functionality might be tied to the passive UI). To do that, I had to give you the Volo's Eye passive: this gives you both the "See Invisibility [PERMANENT]" status in the lower left of the screen (or wherever your permanent passives are displayed: I'm on console interface), which is good, but also the "Volo did surgery on you and now you have a fake Volo eye" passive in the "Other Effects" menu. This, to me, isn't that big of a deal: it displayed for me at the bottom of the list that included the effects of all the armour I was wearing and all the class and racial benefits I had.

This mod does not tag you as having had received Volo's eye, so you will not experience reactivity re: having Volo's eye. As far as my limited testing has gone, the Volo interaction will follow as normal (ie if you take the Hag's Eye, you can't have Volo's eye, vice versa, and you can get Volo's eye through regular gameplay). As near as I can tell, the passive will be there so that the "See Invisibility" indicator will be there, and there is otherwise no overlap.

Installation Instructions:

1) Install via BG3 Mod Manager:

File > Import Mod > Select Mod ZIP > Drag Mod ZIP from Right Column to Left Column > File > Export Load Order to Game

I don't use Vortex, so I don't know if it'll work and I'm not super interested in testing to see if it does.
If it does, let me know and I'll update the installation instructions: otherwise, just use the BG3 Mod Manager.
