A darker, witch-type sorcerer focussing on curses and control spells.

"A dark influence has awakened your innate power and still leads your magic in a direction that some consider to be unnatural."

Your soul might have been touched by the corrupting presence of a demon lord. Maybe you died, and when you came back to life, something had changed within you. Perhaps a hag once “blessed” a witch-hunter's newborn child, or you could actually come from a long bloodline of witches. Whatever it is that affects you, you developed powers that many would consider to be a curse rather than a gift. Common folk are quick to react with fear and prejudice to anything that is different. Whether those feelings are justified is ultimately up to you.

This adds a new homebrew Sorcerer subclass to the game, a darker kind of mage who deals in curses rather than playing with shadows. The class is designed in line with the newer official Sorcerer subclasses, gaining subclass-themed bonus spells but more situational subclass features.

The subclass theme is "Witch". As such expect curses and control spells. And of course necromancy, at least when it comes to making them wish they were dead. Traveling with someone's shambling grandpa in tow isn't part of it.


DARK MAGIC
You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class. These spells count as sorcerer spells for you, but don't count against the number of sorcerer spells you know, and can't be replaced as you level up.
Level 1:Bane, False Life
Level 3:Blindness, Hold Person
Level 5:Fear, Vampiric Touch
Level 7:Blight, Phantasmal Killer
Level 9:Contagion, Dominate Person


GRIM SORCERY
At 1st level you know how to sap lingering life energy from dead bodies around you. (Even if you haven't "made" one yet, the tiny corpses of dead vermin are everywhere.) You use this energy for your spellcasting and can cast False Life as a bonus action, and when casting it as a Level 1 spell, you can do so at will without expending a spell slot.

Mites, ants, maybe a mummified mouse behind the cupboard. We don't want to think about all the hidden little creatures around us, let alone their remains. But in a world where a dead body has magical power, those tiny corpses are an untapped resource. Between the other sorcerers, warlocks, necromancer and death cleric, most "dark" low level buffs are already covered, so this is what I went with.

BALEFUL GAZE
At 6th level you learn a special variant of the Bestow Curse spell, that has a range of 18m/60ft can be cast as a bonus action and does not require concentration.

At least in 5e RAW the spell no longer requires concentration when cast at 5th level. In BG3 there are always better uses for your action, concentration and spell slot. Using it as the shiny level 6 subclass feature was a chance to try and make cursing great again.

PROFANE SIPHON
The 11th level class ability can be used once per short rest to draw the last remnants of life essence from a fresh corpse and use it to restore half your sorcery points.

Coming full circle from the 1st level ability, now we use "real" corpses for our RP-fluff. Basically it's a subclass-flavoured implementation of the PHP 2024 base Sorcerer's Level 5 feature Sourcerous Restoration coming very late in a game with a lot of combat and limited short resting, so once per short rest should be ok.



Installation:
Use Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Manager to import the zip file, activate the mod.

Notes/Compatibility:
  • BG3 Mod Manager flags this mod as requiring the Script Extender, but this is only because of the script to register the subclass using the Compatibility Framework. When this is the only mod that adds a new sorcerer subclass, you don't need the Script Extender.

  • For compatibility with other Sorcerer subclass mods, you need to install the Compatibility Framework and its requirements.

  • This mod was designed with and for Patch 8, but should work with Patch 7. When using Patch 7, you also need to install the Compatibility Framework, or the game will crash in the character editor (without the Framework, this mod is replacing the list of available sorcerer subclasses with one that refers to the Tainted Soul and the Shadow Sorcerer. Since the later is missing in Patch 7, the game crashes.)
