The Alchemist is a curious case amidst the wizards and sorcerers of Faerûn. They possess innate magical prowess like sorcerers, but lack the ability to shape it directly into spells, and instead rely on infusing a variety of alchemical extracts, bombs and serums with their own magical essence.
The Alchemist is designed around three primary resources: Bombs, Extracts and Mutagens.
Bombs are your primary offensive tool as an Alchemist, and are treated as splash damage ranged weapon attacks. You can learn to create a wide variety of different bombs - some lethal, and others designed for utility and battlefield control. Bomb damage is based on your level, sharing similar damage scaling to Rogues' sneak attacks. Alchemists gain additional bomb uses every level, and only replenish charges when taking a long rest, so make every shot count!
Extracts are the Alchemist's answer to spells. Alchemists have limited spellcasting compared to traditional casters, but gain spells from across a variety of spell lists. Alchemist extracts are prepared as fluids that only react correctly with the creator's own anatomy, though there are some Alchemists who have figured out other ways of delivering their extracts...
Mutagens are unique buffs that let Alchemists adapt to the circumstances, exchanging mental ability scores for phsyical ones. Mutagens allow even the most fragile Alchemists to survive in the front lines for a short time. Alchemists can create new mutagens during short rests.
As Alchemists gain experience in their craft, they will develop new Discoveries that help shape their playstyle, making for a highly versatile class. Upon reaching level 3, Alchemists will be able to select one of three schools to specialize in: Demolition, Infusion and Vivisection.
Demolition Alchemists are bomb specialists, gaining access to additional bombs per day as well as exclusive access to the Precise Bombs discovery, granting their allies immunity to their damaging bombs.
Infusion Alchemists dedicate themselves to supporting their allies. By infusing their extracts into salves and incense, they are able to cast support spells on their allies.
Vivisection Alchemists are committed to augmenting their physical forms in order to thrive in the heat of battle. They gain proficiency with martial weapons, increased hit points and additional uses of their Mutagens before resting.
The Alchemist class and its subclasses are well suited to serve a variety of roles in any adventuring party, and with 20 different discoveries to choose from, you can refine your build exactly to your taste!
