Gain Proficiency with Light armour.
Monk AC = 10 + Dexterity modifier + Wisdom modifier + light armour bonus + other bonuses and penalties
If characters like Batman or Captain America can perform dexterous feats and do stuff akin to Flurry of Blows, Monks should at least get proficiency in Light Armour and be allowed to use shields with it.
