Lore Section:
Established in 1974 as one of the first F-14A Tomcat operators in the Osean Armed Forces, Marine Fighter Squadron 78 “Oured Makos” (Marfitron 78) commenced full scale deployment in the F-14A by 1980 when the Cold War between Osea and Yuktobania began, conducting frequent combat air patrol missions around Oured airspace.
During the outbreak of the Belkan War of 1995, VMF-78 was mobilized, conducting wide scale interception, SEAD, airspace denial, and close air support missions. Due to the dangerous nature of the Belkan onslaught at the beginning of the conflict, VMF-78 undertook the loss of several F-14 crews, which would make the squadron leaders reevaluate the tactics being used. VMF-78 was involved in Offensive Campaign No. 4101, assisting Galm Team and the 3rd Osean Naval Fleet in capturing the Futuro Canal. Over the course of the conflict, members of VMF-78 made ace status, with one of the highest scoring crews being of F-14A 160429, scoring upwards of five recorded air to air kills. With the Belkan War drawing to a close with the destruction of the V2 missile and the shoot down of Larry “Pixy” Foulke, VMF-78 was transferred back to Oured, continuing regular exercises and airshow appearances.
After the Belkan War concluded, members of VMF-78 would attend the Naval Fighter Weapons School program, or Top Gun, a joint training regimen conducted by Osea and Emmeria, aiming to decrease the loss rate seen during the opening stages of the Belkan War.
Continuing to 2010, a whole fifteen years later, VMF-78 continued the operation of F-14A model aircraft, utilizing upgrades in the form of an F-14A MLU kit, involving the institution of the APG-71 radar and integration with additional munitions. VMF-78 would see more action during the Circum-Pacific war, deploying with the OFS Vulture to combat Yuktobanian forces. Following an attempted strike and following interception of TU-22M “Backfire” bombers, VMF-78 would be transferred off of the OFS Vulture in order to contribute to the Osean invasion of mainland Yuktobania, conducting close air support and air superiority missions. VMF-78 would see its final action of the war conducting combat air patrol over Oured, flying support for the combined Razgriz Squadron and now allied Yuktobanian forces.
Following the Circum-Pacific War, VMF-78 was transitioned to F/A-18F Rhinos (coming soon™), replacing the F-14A MLUs they operated before.
