About this mod

The Fort Knox Project adds a virtual recreation of the Gold Depository into 7DTD, either as a player base or POI. Download the structure as a prefab to place in your world, or build it from the ground up using the custom blocks and paintable textures!

"The gold depository at Fort Knox, gentlemen.  In its vaults are fifty billion dollars—the entire gold supply of the United States!"
- Auric Goldfinger, 007 Goldfinger

“Considering inflation and additional acquisitions of gold since 1964—Fort Knox holds over three hundred billion dollars in today’s value.”

OVERVIEW

The Fort Knox Project's roots go all the way back to 7DTD Alpha16, with a crude replica of the depository that was built as a PVP base.  As the game improved, the fort's design was greatly refined and expanded.  But there was always a limit to how well this legendary structure could be recreated.

In October 2022, the FKP Team formed and began developing custom models to further enhance the base, making it more accurate and awesome.  We started with basic content and over time the FKP mod evolved into what it is now.

Version 2.0 of content development just finished and will soon be available as a public release for vanilla A21.  There is currently a set of Version 1.0 files for A20 compatible with Undead Legacy 2.617 – the A21 files will be updated for UL 2.7 once it releases.

Why make this mod?  Because breaking into the world's biggest bank is fun!  And as arguably the most secure building in the world, the Fort Knox Depository is a natural choice for a base in the zombie apocalypse.  It's one of the last remaining modern fortresses and our project's aim is to add custom content to 7DTD inspired by the real location.

FEATURES

FKP includes over 100 custom assets consisting of placeable blocks, props, doors, and other special objects that can be used to recreate the Fort Knox Depository - or compliment an existing base you've built.

Many of the assets or paint textures can be used universally if you’re just looking for more content to customize your own base designs.

The Depository in the screenshots is available as a deployable prefab.  We designed the layout for realism and practicality.  Horde nights are a joke if the base is properly defended from the second floor ramparts and the doors are adequately protected.  The Depository can also function as an RP-friendly location for curated group games.

Our team devised scenarios where players can search for the Fort in a RGW then explore the structure and complete environmental puzzles similar to the vanilla game’s POIs in order to access the vaults and all the loot they contain.  We plan to share these publicly in the future.

Most of FKP’s content can be accessed via creative mode by entering ‘knox’ in the search bar, or you can refer to the list of assets above for each version.

ROADMAP

We are nearing completion of FKP Version 2.0, which added many new models and improvements to the V1 content.  V2 is exclusive to vanilla A21 and will soon be available for download.

Plans are underway for developing a Version 3.0 pack, which will add even more models, lore items, interactive objects, paintable textures, and some things we want to experiment with.

FKP's ultimate goal is to accurately recreate Fort Knox in 7Days to Die as a player base and POI.

INSTALLATION

To install the A20 + UL 2.6 version of the mods used to build the Depository, all you need to do is download the A20 V1 Core Mods file and extract the contents to your UL mods directory.  Be warned that the V1 mods won’t work without UL.

If you want the fully built Fort Knox prefab/POI, you must also download the A20 V1 prefab mod file. This will give you the ability to place the prefab in your game worlds by following this method.

Adding the prefab to your RGW generation POI listing is not recommended due to the size of the Fort and the performance drain it causes if you power all the lights.  One per map is plenty, trust us.

The prefab does NOT retain its electrical wiring setup or the custom radius/hue settings on the lights when you first spawn it in.  You will have to rewire and reconfigure everything and the first floor generators are a bit challenging (each one has 70-80W of lights tied to it, so if you mess around you can figure out how to load balance).

The other floors and vaults have their own generators as well.  Everything is fairly intuitive, but some trial and error may be necessary. We STRONGLY recommend installing the Electricity No Wires mod for A20 to prevent cable spaghetti with the lighting.

If you experience too much lag, try turning off some lights or use the UL light settings UI to reduce the radius and intensity of light sources.  Use the A20 base tour video as a reference.

The A21 version of the mods and prefab aren’t quite ready yet but will become available soon!

UNINSTALLING

To remove the mod, break or remove any FKP models from your worlds before uninstalling or be prepared to start a new game.  Then simply delete the modlet folders under your Mods directory in your game folder with “Knox” or “z_” in their name.

LICENSING

Many of our assets are original models developed by Valkinsenn as part of the Fort Knox Project. Other models used were purchased from Sketchfab, CGTrader, TurboSquid, or the Unity Store and included the appropriate licenses to leverage them in FKP.

Nothing included in FKP may be modified, reused, or redistributed without permission from the FKP Team.  FKP may be uploaded to a server to play online.

We aim to be considerate of other 7DTD modders’ efforts and avoid poaching anything used in their projects. If you are a mod author and have any concern about assets we’ve used here, feel free to contact us and we will happily provide copies of our licenses.

CREDITS & THANKS

FKP’s success is owed to the combined efforts of several people, including other mod authors who contributed their knowledge or modding resources.  A big shout-out and thanks goes to:

OcbMaurice – for his CustomTextures and CustomTexturePaints mods, and graciously permitting us to include FKP-specific versions in our core mod files; without his help we wouldn’t have any custom paintable surfaces and the Depository wouldn’t look nearly as cool

Subquake – for his stellar efforts solo developing Undead Legacy and inspiring the FKP Team to learn Unity and develop our own mods

GuppyCur – for helping answer some of our annoying questions about XML and Unity, and for managing the 7DTD modding discord

Xyth – for sharing his Gigachad levels of expertise on 7DTD modding

Smitty – for being awesome and giving us permission to leverage his Industrial Doors, Switches, and Sirens mods as part of our prefab on A20 + UL

Telric – for making a badass set of gates and giving us permission to use his A20 Decorations Pack in our A20 + UL prefab

ZTensity – for his awesome work on UBBI and for permitting us to use some of those assets for FKP

All the other folks on the GC Modding Discord who contributed their knowledge, support, and feedback on the project as we climbed the mountain of learning Unity. You guys rock!
