AutoRead is the time saving, quality of life mod by RyanFaeScotland.
You’ve got a hard enough day ahead of you as it is: crafting your base, looting the neighbourhood, surviving the zombie horde, not to mention making sure you have enough food and water to not starve to death! The last thing you want to be worrying about is categorising and reading books!
That is where AutoRead can help!
Features
AutoRead streamlines the task of looting books to your inventory and selecting the ones you want to read.
AutoRead overrides the default Take All option so that the container you are taking all from is scanned for books before moving the contents to your inventory. Any books found are checked against the configured options, and if they meet the required criteria, they are automatically read. The mod works with stacks and is clever enough to only read the amount of books required to complete a given series (unless you enable Read All of course!). Any remaining books, or ones that don't meet the reading criteria, are moved to your inventory as normal.
AutoRead has 12 customisable reading options to help fine tune it to your personal reading preferences:
- Don’t want to start a crafting series you haven’t begun yet? Turn ReadUnstartedCraftingSeries off,
- Prefer to keep perk books you’ve already read for someone else? Turn ReadKnownPerkBooks off,
- Not worried about keeping schematics you already know? Turn ReadKnownSchematicBooks on,
- Want to keep recipes you find to take back to base for the cook? Turn ReadRecipeBooks off,
All adjustable pre-game via xml configs and in-game via the console, as well as having Gears: Mod Settings Manager support out of the box!
So if you have Gears: Mod Settings Manager by Laydor installed, you can manage all these settings using the in-built UI!
Finally, to make sure you don't miss a thing while auto reading, AutoRead adds unlock messages in the same style as Crafting books, to all Perk, Schematic and Recipe books.

To use, download the AutoRead zip file and extract the AutoRead folder and put it in your Mods folder.

Q & A
“What if I don’t want to read all the books!? What if I just want to read the Perk books and take the Crafting books back to base for our chef / farmer / engineer to read?” Well, with AutoRead, you can do that! The customisable reading options allow you to fine tune the mod to your preferred reading style.
Feedback and Support
Feedback, bug reports and suggestions are always welcome.
I’ve not had a chance to try it out on a hosted server yet, so would love to know how you and your group get on if you do.
If you like it and want to give me a little support and encouragement, Endorsements on Nexus are a great way. However, I'd also love to get a few more followers on my Twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/ryanfaescotland. Don't worry, I actually hardly ever stream so you won't even need to watch! When I do though it is either 7D2D playthroughs using my own mods, or mod making streams where I attempt to show and guide people in the art of mod making.
