7 Days To Die

After a well received public release of Unnecessarily Beautiful But Immersive, I felt like the launch of my first major mod was a success. With this in mind, I knew that in the coming weeks if not longer, I'd look for ways to improve. However, I was not anticipating releasing another update so soon. From a nudge of player RazorEye, I was inspired to take on a challenge of adding a new feature, but with that goal getting accomplished, a lot more came with it.

RazorEye pointed out that he was thrilled someone had taken up the challenge of updating Unnecessary But Beautiful and that he was quick to add it into his game. Despite his excitement, he noticed one immersive feature was missing that I missed and that was to make some of the craftable beds utilize the bedroll property so players like himself could stop using a sleeping bag in a cleaned up house.

Whether it's your style to use the vanilla sleeping bag or utilize one of the beds offered by UBBI to use as your re-spawn point, you can now do that very things with three different beds. Specifically, you will now be able to utilize the big bed and small bed from the Bedroom Furniture recipe and even the Garden Bed from the Pool/Outdoor Furniture recipe. Be careful on that last one though, could be dangerous to fall asleep by the pool!

When deciding to work on implementing this new feature, it of course opened the door for multiple updates from new lights, new textures, behind the scene tweaks and more. First and foremost, I discovered three different objects in the mod when creating a second showcase home that could be changed to use the light feature (allowing players to turn the light on/off using a wire tool). Now, the bathroom shelf and the smaller bathroom sink (originally from the Bathroom Furniture/Amenities recipe) and the swimming pool light (originally from the Pool/Outdoor Furniture recipe) can be turned on/off.

When adding the light feature to the swimming pool light, I recognized in the blocks.xml that their properties were slightly off. Now, properties of all four swimming pool blocks should now match concreate a little closer for what is required to repair these objects and what you can retrieve when destroying the objects. I realized that the floor lamp was ugly, unless it was in a corner. Therefore, I cleaned it and streamlined it with the rest of the lamps. Lastly, I reworked the small lamp's animation. Now, the light feature is working properly, as you'd expect.

One of the biggest, yet smallest parts of the update was re-ordering some of the blocks under the recipes. However, there were a couple big changes that should help with more seamless play. I've added shower glass pieces to the Bathroom Furniture/Amenities recipe so that it's easier to find them when building things like bathrooms, restrooms, shower houses, etc. The other big change was that all lights can now only be found under the Lights recipe to insure immersive play. I've also re-order a few miscellaneous items for better consistency, but likely will go unnoticed.

I tweaked multiple Localization's to help make things feel a little more immersive than they were before. In version 1.2.7, "sofa pieces" has been changed to "sofa furniture" and it's description has been edited to say "sofa furniture for the zombie apocalypse!" The next item to be changed was "pool light blocks," which is now titled "swimming pool light." One of the bathroom cabinets was previously titled "cabinet," but is now aptly titled "small bathroom sink" as it's a light and is more descriptive of what it is. Finally, one of the lamps was changed from the generic term "lamp" to "small lamp."

There was a complaint that UBBI creates a slightly longer boot up time to get into games. I will be the first to say that my personal boot time with 30 other mods is maybe 20-30 seconds give or take? I personally take this time to get a drink, whatever. However, slower boot times are mostly unavoidable, beyond choosing whether you run 7 Days to Die on an SSD and other aspects of your hardware. It is however possible to increase the impact this mod may have on FPS, freezing etc. slightly by pre-loading select bundles into memory.

An items XML has been created to pre-load ten bundles so 7 Days to Die doesn't have to work so hard while playing. Currently, this includes bundles that have ten or more blocks in them (i.e. garden bed/pool items, windows, bathroom amenity items, various doors, sofa furniture and cabinets) and bundles that I've rebuilt (i.e. lights, TVs, a fireplace, a laptop, a PC, a sound bar and a sound file). This should produce smoother gameplay for players.

Finally, in an unexpected turn of events, I had to release an urgent patch last night to fix perk requirements for crafting lights to insure the functionality was working properly and a fix to make sure the floor lamp works as intended. With careful edits, I was able to quickly correct this to insure that it worked without any issues.

Now, with version 1.2.7, players can also unlock lights early before hitting the appropriate perks if you are lucky enough to find the "basics of electricity schematic" either through the trader or out in the world on your travels. Curtesy of not only modder Beardman's suggestion, but also his coding that made it a reality.
