Skyrim Buffers

Short description of what this mod does:
  • It adds a Buffer NPC to the major cities. You can buy buffs from them, upgrade them and make them your follower.
  • The mod comes in two variants. Only use one of them and read the mod conflict- and known issues section before using this mod.
  • One Variant requires ApachiiSkyHair SSE, the other one is standalone.

Detailed description of what this mod does:
  • The buffers are normaly somewhere around the market area in the cities during the day. At night, they are inside the local inns.
  • They are non-essential NPC's and can die but you can do a little "quest" to make them essential so they won't die. (see the spoiler area at the end of this page)
  • You can also upgrade the buffs strenght and duration by 50% and 100% if you let them absorb some dragonsouls.
  • after upgrading you have the option to make them your follower. (see the spoiler area at the end of this page)
  • You can change the amount of gold that a single buff costs and adjust their strenght to give you stronger buffs on higher difficulty settings or lower their strenght on lower difficulties.
  • You can turn the buffs you want on or off inside the buffers menu. Your selcections are stored, you can simply buff yourself the next time. Every time you change something a notification will apear that informs you about the amount of gold needed.

Following Buffs are available to buy from the buffer. All the following effects are on the "low strenght setting" in the buffers menu and can be upgraded by 50% and 100%. The default duration is 30min (45min/60 min) with the upgrades.

Recommended Mods:

I'm using this mod to make the characters look better. Depending on the mods that you use, the buffes will look different from the pictures.

Required Mods for Variant A:

Required Mods for Variant B:
  • none

My other Mod(s):

Installation:
  • Backup your files in case anything goes wrong. I thought about many things while creating this mod and the description to make it save for use, but I'm not perfect.
  • Download and install Variant A or B with Nexus Mod Manager or download it manually and copy the contents to the data folder. (See readme for detailed information)

Uninstall:
  • Make sure all the buffers are dismissed and you have your items back.
  • Save your game and exit
  • Uninstall it with nexus mod manager or manually by deleting the a801Buffers.esp and the a801Buffers.bsa from the data folder and the a801Buffers_Readme.txt from the docs folder. See readme for detailed instruction.

Known issues:

Eventually game engine related:
I noticed this while playing a bit. If you have the health buff and you take more damage than you could take without it and then buff the health buff again with your low health, you will die.
Example:
  • Hp without buff: 100 -> 99 damage taken -> remaining hp 1 -> Buff Health = works like it should.
  • Hp with buff: 120 -> 101 damage taken -> remaining hp 19 (without buff -1) -> Buff Health again = you will die.
  • Hp with buff: 120 -> 99 damage taken -> remaining hp 21 (without buff 1) -> Buff Health again = works like it should.

I used the normal game mechanics to apply the effects, I think the game removes the effect and replaces it with the new one. In this really short time you have a negative health value and because of that, you die.

Mod related:
  • The mod is not voiceacted. If you have subtitles disabled, you can't see the conversation.
  • Sometimes the dialogues end verry quickly an you can't see what the buffer said (see the spoiler area at the end of this page  for details). There is a mod for the old skyrim that fixed this but it requires SKSE, which is not available for SE at the moment.
  • When the buffer performs an action, a scene is playing to animate the process. sometimes the buffer has "better things to do" and the scene is not playing immedialty. especially inside inns when a bard plays music and the NPC's drink and dance. It's not very often but if it happens, just wait. I included a timeout to end the scene to "unstuck" the buffer. This happens also if the buffer missed you with his spell.
  • If you buff a second time within the 15s timeout from the first one, the timeout event cancels the second scene.
  • If you have non-english version of this game. Some names of locations where I modified something (i.e. inn's) could be, depending on your loadorder with other mods, displayed in english.

Except for the things mentioned above, the mod should be bug free. Let me know if you discover something and I will see what I can do.

Mod conflicts:
  • I never used those, but I'm pretty sure this mod will not work if you have an open city mod installed (Mods that allow you to enter a city without a loading screen).

Future updates:
Because of my job and my other personal mods that I must port to SE, I haven't planned any other changes to this mod at the moment. Version 2.0 is the "groundwork" for my later personal modification in combination with other mods. I only want to share what I already have.

I spend the last days with testing all the features to make sure that they work. Beside the things already mentioned, I found no other problems

Change Log:
v2.0: Release Version
  • Added notifications to display the cost for the selected buffs and the players gold.
  • Added a buffer configuration menu to adjust the amount of gold needed for buffs and to adjust their strenght, in case they are to weak or to overpowerded for your settings.
  • Selected buffs are now remebered for the next time.
  • Removed the dialogue options for buffs and replaced it with a menu.
  • Buffers as followers now also become essential when the player places the circlet in the buffers inventory. instead of using the dialogue option.
  • Bug Fix. If the buffer hit an NPC with the buffs, no gold will be removed from the player.

v1.2:
  • The Player now casts the buffs (invisible) instead of the buffer. Because of the upgrade perks, the buff must be casted and not just added to the player. Previously, when the buffer casted the invisible buffs and an NPC walked between the player and the buffer, the npc recieved the buffs instead of the player.
  • Added detection if the buffer hit the player or another npc to end the animation scene.
  • Added timeout events in case the buffer missed you with the spell or for other reasons.

v1.1:
  • Added Scenes to play an actual casting animation instead of just standing there.
  • Made a separat buffer for each city.
  • Added follower and essential option.
  • Removed my custom outfits and used a retextured default outfit.
  • Removed all SKSE features.

Credits:
  • I have lost track of all the tutorials that I watched or read to learn modding this game. My thanks go to all the people who make modding tutorials, the modding community who keep this game awesome with their mods and of course Bethesda for making this game.
  • Thanks to my brother who helped me testing and finding bugs.

Background and why I made this mod:
I'm from germany and english is not my native language. I apologize for any grammatical errors. I have been modding skyrim for years now, but only for personal use. Now with Special Edition I must port my mods to the new game. All my mods are in a single plugin and most of the mods it depends on haven’t been ported to SE yet, some of them likely never will.

For SE I decided to start from Scratch and correct some “mistakes” that I made because of my zero knowledge back when I started modding and to use my gained experience to improve the mods.

After all the hard work and time spent modding this game, I decided to share some of my mods with you. This is the second mod I have made public. I hope you will like it.

I played some mmorpg before I started playing and modding Skyrim. In these games, there where always some sort of buffers in the towns where you could buff yourself bofore you go on a quest.
I missed this "feature" in Skyrim, thats why I made this mod.

Spoilers:

Make the Buffers essential (they can't be killed anymore):
  • Click on the "With your abilities, why don't you fight in the war?" dialogue.
  • After a little conversation, the buffer will give you a circlet recipe.
  • If you have the ingredients, you can craft it at the forge. The "essential ruby is under the "misc" section and the circlet under "jewelery" (they only show up if you have all the ingredients and at least recieved one recipe, but you don't need the recipe in your inventory).
  • Repeat step one and give the circlet to the buffer or place it in their inventory if he/she is your follower. (I recommend using the dialogue because the buffer will buff you afterwards with all the buffs for free, but only one time).
  • The first circlet that you give to him/her makes the buffer essential and will not show up in the buffers inventory. Sometimes it takes a while before the buffer equips the circlet but if you see the notification after the dialogue, it's fine. (After that, they must not wear the circlet, you can give them a helmet or mask and will still be essential)
  • Only this buffer will be essential, you can do the same with the others to make them also essential.

Make the Buffers your followers:
  • Click on the "Do you have stronger buffs?" dialogue and upgrade the buffs, duration and power (2 Dragonsouls for the first and 4 Dragonsouls for the second upgrade, 12 in total).
  • when you have all upgrades, a new dialogue will apear "I could use someone like you on my journey", click on it.
  • After a short conversation the buffer checks your skills. You need at least in one of the following skills lvl 100 or more: Archery, One Handed, Two Handed, Block, Destruction, Conjuration, Illusion or the buffer won't follow you.
  • If you have, all the buffers have now the vanilla follower dialogue option
