Long Description
This is a texture replacer for the Skyrim horses, but instead of just changing the 5 default textures, I changed the unsaddled horses independently and added a second horse to Whiterun. There is also a new option in the hostlers’ dialogue, making the second horses purchasable, so you have 10 colors to choose from when you buy your horse. There is an eleventh texture that is used by the carriage horses that is not purchasable, but it is very similar to the chestnut texture, so hopefully no one is mad at me there. In addition I decided to also name each horse, because why not. They are also 20% faster than vanilla horses.
This one version of this mod also slightly changes the body of the all the horses except for the carriage horses, there is a second version available that uses the Vanilla Body. The only change to the body is that there is less hair around the hooves, neck and belly, it’s the Vanilla mesh with one hair layer deleted. My idea for this was to make them look just a little less clunky, without turning them into a light breed. If you’re interested, take a look at the Noriker breed. They are originally from the central Alpine region and is said to have originated in the highest mountain in Austria. They are also heavy draft horses like the Clydesdales that Skyrim horses are based on, but they are a bit shorter and aren’t quite as hairy which makes the look lighter. In my mind that is what these guys are.

Reason for Texture Glow
As many know there is an issue with the textures that make them shiny and glow in direct light. This mainly seems to be as a result of the new Bloom settings in Special Edition. You may have noticed other things like skeletons and human faces also glowing in Vanilla SSE. The way to fix this is to remove the Bloom, you can either do it in the skyrim.ini file or by using a mod.

To edit the ini file you have to add the following lines into your Skyrim.ini or SkyrimCustom.ini file:
[Display]
fGlobalEyeAdaptStrengthScale=0
fGlobalBloomThresholdBoost=100
fGlobalMapBloomThresholdBoost=100

To edit using a mod here are a few options:
  • Mod 1 PC: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/13718 (I use this one personally)
  • Mod 2PC: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/16987
  • Mod 3 PC: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2135/
  • Mod Xbox: https://bethesda.net/en/mods/skyrim/mod-detail/3016235

Compatibility
  • Unless it changes the horse textures, hostler dialogue or bodies it should be fine.
  • Convenient Horses: Compatible if Convenient Horses is loaded first. The Name Your Horse dialogue from CH overwrites the dialogue from Horse Overhaul, thus removing the option to buy the horses. Unfortunately the Name Horse option from Convenient horses is not available when using it alongside Horse Overhaul. Anyone is welcome to make a patch, just send me the link so I can add it to the description.
  • Horse Armor mods: I’ve been told of some clipping issues with the new body mesh and custom horse armors, such as those provided by Convenient Horses. For this reason I have provided a version of the mod that uses the Vanilla body instead of the new one.
  • Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul: the carriage horses will not use the Brown texture they should. CFTO changes the carriage horses to use the same base actor as the one at its stable. My mod changes the colors of these base actors to most closely represent the color name of that base, and then rearranges them to where I wanted them. If you use CFTO, your carriage horses will use the new body and the appearance will seem random, not actually matching the stable. A patch will be needed to change this, if you can and want, feel free to make one and send me the link to share.
  • Immersive Horses: Not tested. Horse Overhaul does change the horse speed, and Immersive Horses has a retexture option, so problems could occur. Your best bet would be to load Immersive Horses after Horse Overhaul, but no guarantees. Anyone is welcome to make a patch, just send me the link so I can add it here.
  • Mods that add new horses (example: Immersive Citizens) don’t always use the new texture, they use the Vanilla brown horse instead. Try loading my mod after it and all it’s patches.
  • You may be prompted to clean this mod with TESEdit, in my experience doing this will revert all my mod’s changes, so I wouldn’t recommend it. If you wish to give it a try anyway, be aware of this and please reinstall the uncleaned mod before reporting any bugs.
  • If you encounter any other problems please let me know.

Load Order
  • If you have another mod that changes any of the same things you should load this mod after it and let this mod replace any conflicts if prompted, unless you want the other mod to win the conflict, I cannot guarantee the outcome though.
  • If you use something that adds more horses (such as Immersive Citizens), load this after that mod and all its patches.
  • CFTO load order doesn’t matter, CFTO changes the carriage horses regardless of where my mod is located. A patch is needed to display the carriage horses with the old body and new brown texture.

Known Issues

  • If loaded into an existing save there is a chance that the dialogue won’t work correctly, you can give it a shot, the textures will work, but no guarantees on the dialogue.
  • Vanilla stables dialogue is missing upon uninstall. I rebuilt the whole mod in an attempt to rectify this, but even in a brand new save with V3.0 the issue persists. I will continue to look for a solution, if you are a modder and can think of something I missed, please let me know.
  • Feedback and bug reporting is appreciated.

Update Notes
If you are updating to V3.0 in an existing save, please remove all contents from your horse inventory and backup your saves. This is especially important if you use one of the new horse or either of the Whiterun horses. V3.0 is a complete rebuild of the mod and therefore a lot of things will reset. If you owned one of the new horses or either Whiterun horse you are likely to have to buy them again. The reason both Whiterun horses are affected is because of the way that horse was placed in the world in Vanilla. The purchasing system wouldn't have worked while maintaining the new colors, so I had to replace that horse, thus the game treats it as a new NPC.

V2.0
  • Glowing Texture Fix, see that section for solution.
  • All Horses at stables are for sale and a second horse is available at Whiterun.
  • Renamed Mod from Horse Texture Replacer to Horse Overhaul.
  • The texture arrangement has changed slightly since version 1.1, there are also some textures that I swapped out for others for the sake of more diversity. If you used that version your horse won’t be the same color after the update. The only ones that won’t be affected is the Solitude and Markarth horses, this is just a cosmetic change though so it shouldn’t have any game breaking effects.
V2.0.1
  • Fixed the missing audio files when purchasing one of the new horses.
V2.0.2
  • Fixed problem with dialogue when purchasing horses. You should be able to buy them both without issue now.
  • Fixed the issue where the new horse names disappeared after you buy them.
  • Fixed problem with missing dialogue in the VBM version
VBM V2.0.3
  • Fixed the issue with the invisible horses due to a wrongly setup .bsa
V3.0
  • Fixed some remaining dialogue issues.
  • VBM: purchasing issues that remained after the V2.0.2 update should be fixed now.
V3.1
  • Fixed scripts not loading.
Uninstalling
Do NOT uninstall mid-game. If you uninstall it, start a new game after. Check the pinned post for a work-around to uninstall mid-playthrough, but it is NOT recomended.
If you only want to test the mod, rather do it in a test save.

Future Updates
  • I'll fix it if I can figure it out, but I’m about one step below amateur. If you can and want to make patches and fixes for this mod feel free to do so, just send me the link to your page so that I can link it here.
  • Additionally, if you know how to modify or rebuild textures in a way that removes the glowing whites, please let me know. If you are willing I would appreciate your help as both AlienSloff and Bellyaches are no longer working on theirs.
