About this mod

I've always felt that killing Mammoths had a very underwhelming payoff, considering how tough they are in the early levels of the game - especially when slaying Giants is a fairly profitable venture, in comparison.

It irked me that unless the player uses a survival mod that requires them to eat, Mammoths' Snouts are not particularly useful, and other than being used in a few secondary quests, Mammoth Tusks, too, are of little use. I realize Mammoths are useful for filling Grand Soul Gems, but that still felt like poor consolation - particularly to me, as I've often played characters that do not use Enchanting.

It makes little sense that one can make use of the hides of Bears, Sabre Cats and the like by tanning them into Leather, whilst Skyrim's most massive beasts' hide is left unlooted. Waste not, want not?

I'm aware of the existence of "hunting overhaul" mods that might tackle this issue, but I wanted a lightweight solution to this specific problem, with no strings attached. Thus, I created a small mod to address this gripe of mine, which I've been using for a while. I thought I'd share.

  • Mammoths now drop Mammoth Hide, which can be turned into 8x Leather at any Tanning Rack, turning Mammoths into a premier source of Leather.

  • Mammoths now drop 2 Tusks instead of 1, and each of these can be turned into 4x Powdered Mammoth Tusk at Tanning Racks.

  • Mammoths also drop Eyes, a new alchemical ingredient.

An optional file that doesn't contain the Powdered Mammoth Tusk recipe is provided, in case you want to use Grindable Mammoth Tusks by Arndas, or want Improved Mammoth Loot's other features but find grinding down Mammoth Tusks lore-breaking (it's something only Giants are said to be capable of).

Do not install both files, pick either the Main or the optional version.

The recipe components of this mod are compatible with any other mod. However, mods which edit Mammoths' leveled lists are incompatible, as they would make it impossible for you to legitimately obtain Mammoth Hides.

In case you don't know what the above means:

If you find that Mammoths are not dropping Hides/Eyes with my mod installed, you likely have another mod that's editing their leveled lists, and need to move my mod further down your load order in order for it to work.

Download and activate this mod on NMM/Mod Organizer/Your Mod Manager of Choice as you would most other mods.

If anything doesn't work as advertised and/or you run into any issues, please let me know and I will try to address those issues at my earliest convenience.

Other than bugfixes, I have no further updates planned for this mod. I am, however, considering releasing a new mod that would supersede Improved Mammoth loot - so far it improves the loot of Mammoths, Horkers, Goats, Wolves, Skeevers and Frostbite Spiders in very similar ways to this mod. Work in progress, no ETA.

xEdit by ElminsterAU and the SSEEdit Team, used to make this mod.

Grindable Mammoth Tusks by Arndas, whose original idea I wanted to build upon, and lead me to make this mod.

Mammoth Textures by Kajuan, shown on the mod page thumbnail, but not included in the mod.

For posterity, I've no intention of porting my mods over to Oldrim since I now play the SE exclusively, but if anyone wishes to do so, you have my permission. This does not apply to my Meltdown mods, as they require Master files that I do not own.
